The first two Mummy films were great and adding this makes the collection better.
What's great about it: A new location makes it a fresh change.
What's not so great: The yetis playing football.

Stephen Sommers' summer movie extravaganza Van Helsing comes to DVD in this Ultimate Collector's Edition thanks to Universal Studios. This release is packed to the gills with three discs of monster madness. The first disc presents the film in an anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen picture with both 5.1 and 2.0 tracks for your home theater to sink its teeth into. Disc one's multitude of extras includes an interactive tour of Dracula's castle, where the viewer is given the option to listen to Dracula (Richard Roxburgh) ramble on about the different sections of his homely abode. Other features include a ten-minute "Bringing the Monsters to Life" making-of that introduces the audience to the master effects technicians who brought the film's many pixels to life, while "You Are in the Movie" presents a look behind the scenes by an unprecedented amount of hidden cameras on the set. A blooper reel has also been included, as has a ten-minute "Legend of Van Helsing" special that delves into the character's lore from books to the big screen. Two commentaries are available for your listening enjoyment -- the first with director Stephen Sommers and producer/editor Bob Ducsay, and the second featuring actors Richard Roxburgh, Shuler Hensley, and Will Kemp. Finally, a playable version of the Van Helsing game can be accessed through an Xbox game console that allows you to play through the first exciting level of the game. Disc two of the set features even more extras, including a "Track the Adventure: Van Helsing's Map" interactive feature that allows you to select different sections of Transylvania's map to access various behind-the-scenes featurettes from each of the film's main sets. Additional features include the "Explore Frankenstein's Lab" interactive tour, which is set up exactly the same as Dracula's from the previous disc (except with a voice-over by Dr. Frankenstein). "Dracula's Lair Is Transformed" is a time-lapse section that allows the viewers to see the massive set being built and taken apart in front of their eyes. For audiophiles, there's "The Music of Van Helsing" interview with Alan Silvestri, where the acclaimed composer discusses this score as compared with his other collaborations with Sommers. The last section, "Van Helsing: The Myth, The Story, The Legend" is made up of four separate featurettes on each monster as they've been recreated for the film. The final disc features three of the founding Universal monster films with the inclusion of Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Wolf Man. Of the films, only Dracula's extras have been carried over from the stellar reissue released during Van Helsing's theatrical run. If you've got the dough and are a pushover for Sommers' brand of over-the-top adventure antics, then this set is most definitely for you.

Best horror film collection!

The adaption of Universal's classic monsters is excellent while you get to see what they looked like in the originals.
What's great about it: Four movies for a good price.
What's not so great: More action then horror.

From Universal comes the straight-to-DVD animated feature, Van Helsing: The London Assignment. Presented in a 1.85:1 widescreen picture that not only boasts a lush color palette and sharp image quality, but, when accompanied by the kicking 5.1 Dolby Surround track, the flick looks, feels, and sounds as big as the Hollywood production that it precedes. Sadly, since it's only 33 minutes long, there are no scene selections on the disc, but the size of the extras should please those looking for a little meat to their DVDs. Bonus features are split into four different sections, the first being a spoiler-filled look at Stephen Sommers' summer blockbuster Van Helsing in the "Behind the Screams" documentary hosted by cast member Josie Maran. Basically a shill when it comes down to it, the clip features many juicy moments from the film, littered with raving comments from everyone involved. A jaded viewer might think that it's a little too much (the product placement of the Universal box sets at the end are certainly an eye-roller), but that's the nature of the movie tie-in beast -- put the product out there to sell the bigger fish. The "Animatic to Animation" storyboard comparison is next, followed by an interview with star Hugh Jackman that shows the actor recording dialogue and discussing the differences between film acting and voice work. The final extra is...you guessed it, another movie tie-in! This time it's for the Vivendi Universal Van Helsing game for the Playstation 2 and Xbox systems, featuring a few more tidbits from Jackman, along with additional interviews with the game's creators. Fans of the film will enjoy diving into this disc, with others most likely buying it for their kids to watch time and again. (Warning: the film features numerous violent scenes which might be too extreme for younger viewers.)

A good prequel making it interesting to see why the live-action movie started the way it did.
What's great about it: Van Helsing takes Mr. Hyde down.
What's not so great: Short.

Best action film ever!

This movie's action is by far the best ever. The cinematography makes it awesome every time a gun is shot, and almost makes bending a bullet seem real.
What's great about it: Everything you want in a action flick.
What's not so great: Unrealistic.

It's nice to have a choice between DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1, but the kind folks at Universal have included Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround for the French-language track, which is nice for the Canadians who will surely want to see how their dear Mounties are depicted in this merely amusing send-up. The other choice viewers have is widescreen or pan-and-scan, and choices are always nice even if pan-and-scan is the devil's work. The image looks bright and sharp in both formats, but crisper and with better resolution in the widescreen. The DVD for Dudley Do-Right includes a DVD-ROM feature that accesses a jigsaw puzzle at the Universal website; it's not much, but it's something, and with a clunker like this film, viewers will have to do everything they can to give the impression of "value added." The theatrical trailer, production notes, and text cast bios are included, but they look sharper at the Universal website.

This twin-disc set combines the first two live-action Flintstones movies. Both The Flintstones and The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas are presented in widescreen anamorphic transfers that preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in a variety of Dolby Digital formats. Spanish and French subtitles are accessible. Both discs contain making-of documentaries, although the one on The Flintstones is more comprehensive. This is a cost-effective way to acquire both of these titles.

Arnold Schwarzenegger takes on all comers in a mythic style in this special DVD twin-pack, which presents Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer in one package. Both films have been transferred to disc in letterboxed format at the widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1, with the images enhanced for anamorphic playback on widescreen monitors. The audio for both films has been mastered in Dolby Digital Mono; both are in English, while Conan the Destroyer also features an optional dubbed soundtrack in French. Conan the Barbarian includes optional subtitles in French, while the follow-up does not feature subtitles. Bonus material featured on Conan the Barbarian includes an extended cut of the film, deleted scenes, a short documentary on the making of the picture, the original theatrical trailer, and a commentary track with director John Milius and star Arnold Schwarzenegger discussing the movie. The Conan the Destroyer disc is fortified with production notes, biographies of the cast and crew, and the original trailer.

Love it or hate it (and let's face it, most hated it), this film is a marvel of set design and art direction, and that is well represented on this special edition DVD. The 1.85:1 anamorphic image is simply stunning. (As is common now, a full-frame version is available separately.) Colors, a vital element of the film, are presented with an amazing flourish, perfectly capturing the theatrical appearance. There are no signs of grain or print scratches, as would be expected. Nearly as impressive is the 5.1 Dolby Digital track. The sound mix is very exciting, with wide use of the surrounds for effect, but the main audio source is never drowned out up front. Dialogue is clear (this could be a good or bad thing, depending on your view) and without any distortion. It wouldn't be surprising to see a two-disc re-release happen down the line, but this title still throws in a number of first-rate supplements. While the menus are annoying, they will take you to numerous sections, mainly comprised of 12 short (under three minutes each) featurettes. Those with short attention spans will appreciate these pieces, all with interviews from director Bo Welch, star Mike Myers, and other cast members. Segments include the cat makeup, the music, the creation of the Theodore Seuss Geisel stamp, the vehicles, various visual effects, and more. In addition, and designed to appeal to the very young, is a segment on how to dance like the cat. Slightly more promising, though not the best ever produced, is an audio commentary track from Welch and Alec Baldwin. The two seem to enjoy recording this track, and their time making the movie. Infinitely more amusing than the film is a lengthy bloopers segment. Finally, a number of deleted scenes are offered, as well as the trailers for Shrek 2 and Peter Pan. Overall, this is a fine disc, from the exceptional picture and sound to a wide array of extras. Now, if only the film was as good.

The Des McAnuff-directed, Robert De Niro-produced version of the popular Jay Ward Saturday morning cartoon finds an above average DVD release via Universal. The aspect ratio is anamorphic widescreen 1.85:1, with English and French language Dolby Digital Surround Sound. Also on the dual-layered disc are a bevy of extras, including crew bios, a trailer, production notes, and a DVD-ROM interactive feature that can also be voice activated.
