Nukular's Reviews

One thing that can be said about Warner Bros.' DVD library is that it's consistent; their discs rarely contain more than filmographies and a theatrical trailer or two. Fortunately, there are exceptions to that rule, and apparently someone within the studio saw fit to make John Boorman's epic retelling of the Arthurian legend one of those exceptions. The major addition here comes in the form of a commentary track by director Boorman, whose monologue is refreshingly insightful at a time when many commentaries are used up with friendly yet ultimately meaningless banter. Also featured are, as usual, the theatrical trailer, scene selections, and a cast and crew section that curiously contains only information on Boorman himself. Fans of the film who have until now only seen it on VHS will be amazed at the clarity of the audio mix. The soundtrack has been remixed into a digital 5.1 presentation that makes the best of its limited source material and manages to separate nicely. There is a prominent bass track which was certainly not present in previous incarnations of the film and which adds a great deal of weight and authenticity to the many elaborate battle scenes. The film has never looked so good; almost every instance of film grain has been removed and the colors, particularly the flesh tones, are well balanced. The picture is presented in a non-anamorphic letterboxed format at 1.85:1. Overall, Boorman's insightful commentary alone, not to mention the outstanding audio and video quality, makes this disc well worth owning.

Spectacular Movie

The Movie is absolutely one of my family's favorite films of all time. John Boorman struggled to get the film made for years and succeeded in creating a visual masterpiece. Some critics just can't get the thrill out of a film which succeeds in creating such great imagery (which is what a film should be doing IMHO versus pensive heads yapping back and forth "acting" at each other which some critics adore). The commentary on the film is some of the best I have ever seen as John Boorman explains many interesting aspects of getting the film made and clearly shows an obsession for horses. This film has several actors doing their first film or first role of significance who go on to become major stars. Patrick Stewart, Liam Neeson come to mind. This film also gave the start to the Irish Film industry as is explained in the commentary. The story tries to be much more true to the original Arthurian legend versus the disneyfied ick that others may think or as the story now. Helen Mirren is the biggest name star now and does a wonderful job. Nigel Terry gives an incredibly great performance as Arthur. Nichol Williamson is wonderful as Merlin with one of the most memorable delivery of lines. The film is a gem that everyone should see. It has some scenes that aren't for children but I think young viewers will love the film if you can zip past a few scenes with too much skin.

Who would have expected a special edition for '80s cult film The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the 8th Dimension? That is exactly what MGM has delivered with this DVD, and the results are exceptional. The special features for this disc are rather unique, as they present this film like Bonzai actually lived. A nice documentary, with vintage interviews from the cast, and new material with director W.D. Richter doesn't go into great detail, but is still informative and amusing. A real plus is a commentary track with Richter and writer Earl Mac Rauch. Also, on a subtitle track, information is presented as fact about the history of the characters. Knowing the movie is obviously fiction makes this track all the more entertaining. In addition, there are character profiles, information about the "jet car," a photo gallery, an alternate opening (with Jamie Lee Curtis), a tease trailer, deleted scenes, and much more. As for the picture and sound, care has been taken there also. The 2.35:1 anamorphic image is the best this film has seen since the theaters. Though not without some problems, such as moments of grain, it looks far better than would be expected for such a relatively unknown movie. The sound is also good, but not necessarily strong. The 5.1 English track is primarily centered upfront, with only limited use of the surrounds. The front right and left speakers do get some use, creating a little directional effect. Also available is a mono track in French, as well as subtitles in French and Spanish. While there is no question this isn't a film that will ever appeal to a wide audience, fans will be highly grateful that so much work went into this disc.

Great Different Movie
on September 16, 2008

This is a quirky movie that is not just the same old. It boldly advertises its never to be made sequel. Too bad because this really is a great movie with some appropriately over the top performances. In some ways it was ahead of its time as it has a comic book base to the story line. Some really great lines are in it and it is a movie which is fun to watch more than once. Some of the dialogue is pretty quick and you really don't want to miss some of the clever quips.
Appropriate for all although the young may find some of it a frightening. The movie generally moves at a great pace... maybe a little faster than some of the critics could handle. Above all else it was a hard sell when released since it was just not the standard rehashes that Hollywood loves.
It is a sci-fi action adventure with Buckaroo as a brain surgeon / rock star / high adventure interdimensional traveller and you will just have to see it to appreciate the greatness it attempted and to lament that we will never see Buckaroo Bonzai go up against the world crime league. Some great performances by John Lithgow and Jeff Goldblum before they became big names.
The movie is a total package which gets you going into its world despite the lunacy.
What's great about it: A different movie
What's not so great: No sequels

A young woman trying to sort out her life after college returns home to Niagara Falls and gets a job at a souvenir shop, where she discovers all sorts of inanimate objects are attempting to communicate with her in the offbeat comedy drama series Wonderfalls, which arrives on DVD in this special collector's set. Wonderfalls: The Complete Series features all 13 episodes from the quirky cult favorite, including nine that never aired on American television. Also included in this package are audio commentaries on several episodes, a short documentary on the production of the show, a look at how the special effects were created, and a music video from XTC leader Andy Partridge.

One of the Best Series Ever

This is the entire series of Wonderfalls which includes unaired episodes. Yes it is quirky and strange but it is truly a gem which should be seen. Everyone in my family very much enjoyed the series and lamented in how so wonderful a show could be cancelled so quickly. It is the problem where everything has to be derivative to be successful apparently. I suppose perhaps the recent series "Pushing Daisies" is trying to do somewhat of what this series did but I like Wonderfalls much more. If you just are looking for another of the same and can't let yourself go perhaps this series is not for you but this short-lived series is absolutely one of the best shows I have ever seen. The extras and commentary are great as the actors and creators tell some great stories about making the episodes.
What's great about it: Very different but most enjoyable series
What's not so great: Series was cancelled after only a couple episodes so no more
