The second chapter in the "Bourne Trilogy," based on Robert Ludlum's best-selling espionage novels, reaches the screen in this sequel to the 2002 thriller The Bourne Identity. Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) has abandoned his life as a CIA assassin and has been traveling beneath the agency's radar, eventually reconnecting with Marie Kreutz (Franka Potente), the woman he loves. But Bourne is haunted by vivid dreams and troubling memories of his days as a killer, and he's not certain how much really happened and how much is a product of his imagination. When Bourne is led out of hiding by circumstances beyond his control, he must reconcile his past and present as he struggles to keep Marie out of harm's way and foil an international incident with dangerous consequences. The Bourne Supremacy also features Joan Allen as one of Webb's superiors, while Julia Stiles and Brian Cox reprise their roles as intelligence agents from the first film.

The X-Men DVD provides an impressive 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and THX sound, but the supplementary material feels rushed. While the viewer has the option of watching ten minutes of extra footage reinserted into the film through "extended branching," the transition is not seamless; most of the scenes are from an unfinished working print and are not anamorphic like the rest of the film. The featurette "Mutant Watch" is a television "making of" special that is at least creative in its execution, if not very substantial. Segments from a Charlie Rose interview with director Bryan Singer are also included, but it would have been nice to see the interview in its entirety, while the Hugh Jackman screen test is a feature better placed in the context of a more expansive documentary about the production. The art and animatics galleries feature remarkable concept designs and computer animated storyboards, as well as two hidden "Easter eggs." Highlighting the rose in the trailer menu shows a brief on-set gag involving Spiderman, while Wolverine's dog tags in the art gallery provide concept art for two characters cut from the film. While X-Men has the appearance of a special edition DVD, it will certainly be supplanted by a more authoritative version in the future.

John Pasquin's holiday comedy The Santa Clause comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while Spanish and French soundtracks have been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. Spanish subtitles are accessible, and the English soundtrack is closed captioned. Supplemental materials include a trivia game and a pair of featurettes. Those with a DVD-ROM drive can access additional featurettes and a screensaver for PC. This is a solid release from Disney/Buena Vista.

One man bent on seeing justice done takes his obsession to the streets in this big-screen adaptation of the popular comic book, which comes to DVD in an enriched edition from Lions Gate. The Punisher has been given a letterboxed transfer to disc in the widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1, which is also enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors. The audio has been mastered in two formats, Dolby Digital 5.1 EX and Dolby Digital Stereo; the dialogue is in English with optional subtitles in English and Spanish. Bonus materials include an alternate commentary track featuring director Jonathan Hensleigh, two deleted scenes, four short documentaries on various aspects of the production of the film, a music video from the band Drowning Pool, and a preview of a video game tied into the film.

Doug Liman's box-office hit The Bourne Identity gets a new DVD release to coincide with the theatrical release of the film's sequel, The Bourne Supremacy. This "Explosive Extended Edition" of the film offers a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. English, French, and Spanish soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. English, French, and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a new beginning and ending for the film, deleted scenes, a featurette about choreographing a fight scene, a featurette about how much the film resembles actual spy work, a short documentary on amnesia, and a profile of Robert Ludlum -- the author who created these characters. This is a solid release from Universal, who were kind enough to throw in a free ticket to see The Bourne Supremacy with all purchases of this disc.
