Inexpensive and good for music

What we have here is a rather inexpensive Bluetooth headset. It comes with its own USB cable that is used for charging the internal battery. A short manual needs to be read thoroughly so you can set it up properly. The only "switch" on the right side has many functions. First, you would charge the headset for a few hours before use, and when you try to pair this with your device, a very pleasant female voice comes on (obviously you will have to wear the headset to hear her voice) and tell you that it is ready to be paired.
To charge it, you'd have to pry the earpiece apart (to see the plug), because generally, it is hidden. The little LCD light comes on when it's charged and when it's full, it changes color.
I have a big head and I don't find it uncomfortable. However, my brother tried it and he thought it felt a little too tight. I think the bar can be bent a little (just like when you try on a new pair of glasses) so it will fit better. There is an extra pair of sponge cushion to replace in case the first one wears out. The earpieces are not the kind that cover your ears, so if you have it loud, the sound will be heard by others near you (but that has to be pretty loud), and it doens't cover the external noises either. I find those headset way too big and heavy for me and it's not something I want to wear if I go out for a walk (too heavy and too sweaty).
So you know, you do not control the volume setting with the switch at all. It is not like you press up or down on the headset to do that. The control has to come from the device that it is connected to.
I tried to use this headset for a few things. It works very nicely paired to my Samsung S5 telephone to listen to Netflix, and YouTube videos. It also works very nicely with Dell precision workstation laptop that has its own Bluetooth. It works fine with an iPad and a Samsung tablet, too.
It also connected well with a desktop with the third market, a generic Bluetooth transmitter.
To use it as a telephone headset – I have to say that it works, but your voice will sound a little muffled. The reason is that there is no actual microphone, like a typical headset that has a microphone sticking to the front, so the built-in microphone listens to your voice more or less from the side. You don't have to scream to talk, but if you're in a noisy room, it doesn't pick up your voice too well. This is typical for the design.
I tested it with my phone and the other party was able to hear me clearly enough for a phone conversation.
However, when I try to use it with my desktop to do voice dictation (I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking/Dragon Medical), the usual 99 percent to 100 percent accuracy rate (using a handheld microphone that costs 20 times more) went down to something much worse. I tried to dictate a few sentences and the program allows me to play back my own voice and it sounded like I was in the cave. It is not made for such task, but I am reporting it in case someone will want to try to use this for voice dictation. (Don't bother.)
For Skype, it works fine. The other party was able to hear me clearly enough to understand me.
One final thought is probably something most people do not seem to care. My brother is on the phone a lot and he asked me if this headset is able to function while it is being charged. He stated that he has tried a lot of Bluetooth headset, and he has only found another one that can keep on working while it is being charged. (He carries a little external battery that has the USB connector and he plugs it into his Bluetooth headset and it uses that external battery, instead of the internal battery which may not last him all day) I am happy to say that this model continues to work while it is being charged, while connected to an external battery.
So if you are on the phone a lot or if you use it to listen to something all day, and if you do not think the eight hours runtime will be long enough, you can certainly have this thing connected to a small rechargeable block of battery and put that, say, in your pocket or something. Some people may not be too concerned about this but the truth is a headphone like this – the internal battery cannot be replaced.
Any rechargeable battery will not last indefinitely and eventually, it would not hold a charge. But since this model costs less than USD20, perhaps after a year if used daily, the battery will not hold the charge so I expect the user to just buy a new one to replace it.
To sum it up – it is pretty light, and it looks very retro and it is comfortable for someone with a big head like me. To listen to the music and movies – it is very clear.

Once you 240 Hz, it's too hard to return to 60Hz

Although this monitor has an HDMI connector, as this is the newer generation of monitor that supports NVidia's G-Sync technology, but can only do so via the DP (DisplayPort 1.2).
Setting Up:
Setting up was easy. The stand is very sturdy – and quite heavy. The cables, the manual, and the stand were easy to locate, and removed from the box – but removing the screen itself was an odd experience. The foam covering had nothing to grab onto to actually lift the monitor out of the box. What I did was to place the box down flat (monitor facing downward), and basically pulled the contents out of the box, and onto the floor.
The manual was very minimal – in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese – and each section are only four pages long.
Everything snapped together easily – thankfully because the manual doesn't go into it. The flap of the box had small illustrations which showed where the monitor fits on the stand but I did not think it was truly needed. There is a little plastic hook that can be put on the back of the monitor to hand a headset. But it came off easily when I bumped it.
Once mounted, the monitor can be rotated left and right up to 45 degrees (each side) thanks to the articulated stand. Its height can also be adjusted up to almost 5 inches. The screen itself can be rotated so it can use this as a vertical format – for something like full-page desktop publishing. The screen can also be tilted forward and backward. All movements are smooth enough and it feels tight - even the weight of the screen, it stays in place.
ACER calls it "zero frame" but it means this monitor has very thin bezel design. So if you have extra wide configuration (three monitors side-to-side for enhance peripheral vision), little space is wasted.
To top it off, it has a matte finish – I never knew how much better this is compared to shiny screens that reflects everything in the room.
Oddly the buttons are on the back (bottom right corner of the monitor.) You'd have to "reach" them from the bottom of the bezel. Once any button is pressed, the menu comes on. From the user's point of view, the "right" button is the power button, the next one is the function key (and works like a joystick). Next one can be used to quickly choose the input (HDMI or DP). Next to that is the hotkey to choose pre-set settings (Action game, Racing game, Sports, Standard, ECO, Graphics, Movies and User) I got quickly used to these buttons after a few minutes. I don't expect to locate the right one when I reach back there though.
The typical power cable is connected to the back, a DP connector, an HDMI connector, and there is an audio out connector for a headphone. Sadly this is needed because the built-in speakers are only two watts and I turned all the way to 100 percent and it wasn't loud enough for me. There was nothing I could do in control panel and Windows itself to increase the loudness of the sound from the speakers.
You can also connect the monitor to your computer via the USB 3 cable and it adds two ports to the left side and two more on the back.
All cables are included - DP, HDMI, power and USB 3.
I tested the monitor with five different computers all running Windows 10 Professional 64 bit. All these graphics cards have DP and HDMI connectors.
Testing systems:
First one was Intel i7 with 32 G of RAM and NVidia GTX 1080.
The second computer was Dell Precision M4600 32 G of RAM with Nvidia Quadro M1000.
The third computer was Xenon quad-core 2.5 MHz with 8 G of RAM with Quadro FX4800.
The fourth computer was AMD FX 6300 with 16 G of RAM and Nvidia 1050ti.
The fifth computer was Xenon quad-core 2.5 MHz with 8 G of RAM with Nvidia GTX 780.
I was asked to test this monitor with HDMI connection, but most buyers who will shell this much money will use it for DP (at 240 Hz) connection. So I tried all computers mentioned with both connections but focused mainly on DP connections (at up to 240 Hz as supported by the graphic cards. Quadro M1000 goes up to 140 Hz only.)
If you are a serious gamer and are thinking about buying this monitor, I would assume that you have the higher end graphic card. Otherwise, connecting this monitor to an HDMI connector is like using inexpensive gasoline for a Ferrari. This is one of the newer generation of monitors that can do 240Hz and has a response time of 1ms.
It works perfectly fine for the Precision M4800 (portable workstation). It can be used as the second monitor. It dwarfs the computer because it is so big.
I played Half-Life 2, BioShock 2, Dirt 3, Overload, and on the Xenon / GTX 780, I used Cyberlink PowerDVD 18 Ultra to play a few Blu ray movies.
On the i7 32 G of RAM with GTX 1080, I used HDMI and later DP connector.
What I saw:
Overload has the screen where I could set the refresh rate. I tried 60 Hz and later, at 240 Hz.
This monitor is quite large - it is like having a large screen TV just a couple of feet away - and when I switched to 240 Hz, I actually got a little dizzy (when I panned a scene, for example). Everything was buttery smooth - this is not something I was used to. The result was astonishing and it's hard to go back.
I had to physically move it back on the table a bit because it felt so overwhelming. The system was fast enough that I moved the mouse quickly, and there were no problems - no tearing, no noises. Everything was very smooth.
Some may ask, and I certainly asked myself - was it running at 240 Hz? There is a setting to show the current refresh rate (which constantly changes from scene to scene). With the GTX 1080 and Intel i7, it could keep up at 240 Hz.
There are other settings that may be of interest to many gamers - "dark boost levels" and the color balance can be adjusted, as well. Three custom profiles can be saved and switched to quickly, too.
This monitor makes a nice monitor for a Blu ray player. The contrast is nice and it is quite sharp. I also loaded a white image and the whole screen is even with no drop-off nor were there any dead pixels.
Just remember to use a sound bar (or your own headset if you're alone) because its built-in speakers are inadequate. You can turn it to the side if you watch the movie in bed (on your side, that is).
It comes down to this - if you are a gamer, and especially for a shooter, or a racing game, I assume you have a high-end NVidia graphic card that supports G-Sync, you will be tempted to get this monitor because once you go 240 Hz, it's difficult to return to 60 Hz.
I would consider this monitor luxurious, but then so is everything else that makes up a good game room.

A decent movie, but...

It looks wonderful on Blu-ray, but the acting is very uneven. Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman had almost unbelievable script to follow. Having seen her in other movies, I have concluded that, along with others, it was the director's fault. The special effects look absolutely wonderful and the fight scenes were great, as well. But I clinched every time the characters of those two opened the mouths. This may have been a career suicide for Christensen and it is very sad to see that they didn't notice this. I know for sure that this would never be included in the Criterion Collection.

Works very well with an HDR 4k tv!

I have LG 70 inch 4k with HDR (2016) television and with regular blu ray, it looks great, but with 4k blu ray (see photo attached), it simply is like being at a theater!
It upscales regular DVD nicely, too.
The remote leaves a lot to be desire. Way too small. I was able to pick up a regular Samsung remote (from e-bay) for less than 10 bucks.

I knew what the movie was about, and I watched it with a friend. While we enjoyed it, we had very little sympathy for the characters. They knew the danger they were facing, and I assume that they knew what they were doing. A few of them died trying to reach the summit, and I did not feel any sadness whatsoever. Furthermore when they reached the top, I almost expected background fanfare music – and it didn't. Of course in real life nothing like this happened. The movie was well done. The characters were believable (although I did not care for one man who put himself in danger - leaving his wife at home), but it is almost like watching a documentary of what happened to these people. Some movies can be watched repeatedly, but this one it is not.

Buena Vista Home Entertainment spared no expense or extra in the double-disc DVD creation of the animated, Oscar-winning Spirited Away. The remarkable aspect of these special features is how educational they are, providing much insight into this award-winning Japanese film. To begin, Spirited Away is presented in flawless 2.0:1 widescreen, enabling the richness of the animation to explode onscreen. The sound, presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 English and Japanese Surround, is flawless. A French Dolby Digital 2.0 track is also included. The featurette, "The Art of Spirited Away," is a must-see. It offers insight into the interpretation of the quite-symbolic film as well as stories about the trials and tribulations encountered during the translation process. Other extras include a feature on the dubbing process, a lengthy and star-packed Nippon Television documentary special on the film and how its key players worked to create the final product, a storyboard-to-scene comparison and 30 minutes of Japanese trailers for the movie.

It didn't win an Oscar for nothing!

This movie has been my favorite movie of all time, and now it is available on Blu-ray, and I had to get it. It looks absolutely stunning on a 65 inch 4K television – and all the emotions came back when I watched it again. The English dubbed is very good but I have watched it in Japanese, I enjoy that too. The story is about a young girl who along with her family, was moving to a new home. Somehow her parents were drawn into stopping at an abandoned amusement park. They started to eat the food at a restaurant (which had no one working), and were transformed into pigs. The girl had to do everything to return her parents into human form again. (This is how the movie gets fun.) There are parts that brought me to tears, and there are many moments that made me smile. It truly is a family-friendly movie although very young children may think that the ghost characters can be too scary. (Those who may feel that way are probably too young to watch something this long anyway.) It is a true gem from the studio – totally hand-drawn, with good music, good story, and good script - and it won an Oscar that year. I am so happy is available at a decent price on Blu-ray at Best Buy.

Inexpensive but not cheap!

So inexpensive, and yet, not cheaply made at all. The screen is crystal clear. I don't have any problem with Windows 8.1 (just installed Classic Shell, a free program, and the Start Button is back!) It runs everything - including Dragon Medical 2 (high end version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking) and is fast enough to keep up with real time speech, too. Using PowerDVD 13 Ultra works fine (it has its own cheaper version of PowerDVD I believe but I uninstalled it). This is a perfect laptop for a college student who needs to use it to do homework. I am not a fan of Mac (can't afford it, I know..) and as well made and pretty as they are, I can't see myself paying $1,000 for a lap top that all I want to do is to go on the internet and type a letter (in this case, "dictate" a letter). Besides, Dragon Medical 2 does not run on Mac!! Thank you Best Buy for keeping the price low. Recommended? Heck yes!

Not worth the money.
By Jaredpw
This product is very bad, for several reasons. One reason this product is not good, is it does not come with a "Micro USB-to-USB cable". This is quoted to be included in the package but it is not. Furthermore, both back and front cameras are extremely poor and grainy. This tablet constantly freezes and even the simpleness of tasks create a laggy experience. Just going though my twitter feed causes the screen to lag and jittery. The battery life is alright, it lasts about 7-8 hours on a medium use. Also, right out the the box i had less then 35gb on a 64gb tablet. I uploaded a picture I took with the tablet so you can see the quality of it.

Of course its hard drive of 64 GB will not have 64 GB of space on it. It is taken up by Windows, and a back up copy of it. That is what a memory card slot is for (to save your data). All computers are like that.
To rate it lowly just because of that and perhaps it didn't come with a cable is unfair.

I am happier with this player than the Sony!
By Pooky
I have a Blu-ray, 4K up converter player from Sony, connected to a 65 inch 4K television that I bought from Costco. I was not unhappy with that combination – it didn't play DVD movies well. There was not setting for "progressive" and it showed too much interlaced (when 24p was set to on). This player has an additional setting which fixed that problem. I realize that a DVD, no matter how good it is, is not a Blu-ray, and it cannot be made to look that good with any player, but I am very, very happy with this one. The player is beautiful – it starts up fairly quickly and just like the Sony, it plays beautiful Blu-ray movies on a 4K television. Haven't been to a movie theater in years, and this is another reason I will never return.

Downscales 4k blu-ray to 1080
By antennaguy
I connected this player to my 2014 Samsung UHD TV set, and discovered that all my regular blu-rays are upscaled to 2160p. So far, sol good. But then I received my first actual UHD blu-ray, The Martian, popped it into the player, and found that it is downscaled to 1080. Nothing I tried had any affect. I have yet to receive another 4k blu-ray, so I don't know whether I'd get a different result with a different disk. I've been in touch with Samsung tech support, but so far they have been unable to offer a solution that works.

Very happy overall.
By Pooky
I have a 65 inch 4k TV (brand is Element, bought from Costco a few months ago). I have a Samsung 4k upconvert blu ray player and was happy with that, but wanted this true 4k when it came out and fortunately I ordered it just on time (because a few minutes later, Bestbuy ran out.) Got it quickly in the mail - 2 days UPS - nicely packed.
It is connected to Vizio SB3821-C6 38" 2.1 Bluetooth Soundbar via digital output. Internet via ethernet cable and to the TV with the same HDMI cable that I was using before.
Regular DVD looks good. Didn't expect it to look * that * good, but when I popped a blu ray disk in, it really was stunning. First played Cleopatra (Elizabeth Taylor) blu ray. I didn't expect it to upconvert 1080p source to 4k that well. Very sharp (without noises). No color bleedings. (Default setting on TV, and following settings on the player: Deep Color: on, Resolution at 2060p, 24p to on.
Later tried Everest blu ray from Netflix that came in today. It looked amazing. A visiting friend felt it looked great, too. I tried playing it with the other Samsung 4k upconvert player, and honestly, I thought the true 4k player looked better.
We tried an episode of Netflix stream show - Frankie and Grace. This is one of the few shows that is in 4k. It loads quickly (I have fast Time Warner Cable 300K speed) - just a few seconds, and no pauses at all. It simply looked AMAZING. My friend and I stood about two feet away from the screen and we were able to see all the juicy details. I thought a regular Blu Ray looks good with this player, but real 4k Netflix looks even better. It was crystal clear.
I am not saying that I can't wait until I buy a 4k blu ray movie (on a disk). They are expensive and the selection is still limited (as of now, February 2016). Am looking forward to buying them for newer movies that I do not have on blu ray yet in due course.
I use a Canon 5d Mark II with 24-70 mm f 2.8 L lens to take photos of the screen (ASA 1,000, hand held). One is whole screen, and the other is a foot away. I hope these photos are useful.
Now the bad news: the remote is small, and it uses (supplied) button battery. Fortunately the old remote that came with the previous BR player works (it is also Samsung.) I can't believe an expensive player like this comes with this tiny remote. There is no fast forward button (or go back) - you'd have to hold the "next chapter" button down to do that. Many people are going to be upset about this. Lastly, no HDMI cable either.

4k Kingsman The Secret Service
February 19, 2016
Can't edit the original review, and it won't let me use the same ID. Anyway, I picked up a copy of 4k blu ray of above movie. It also comes with a regular 1080p blu ray, so I watched both. I paused at the same spot, a few minutes into the movie. I do have to say that I could see the difference between 4k vs. 1080p. 4k is sharper, and has more details (the scene paused was the youngster when they first met with the trainer. I stood close to the screen, just a couple of feet away (65 inch), and looked at a boy's sweater. I could see the fine details with 1080p, but quite more on a 4k copy. HOWEVER, stepping back and sitting on the sofa, I was quite happy with the 1080p copy - And since the player upscales Blu-ray movies beautifully anyway, I do not think I will actually replace any Blu-ray movies that I have with a 4K version, but most likely will get some 4K movies when they come out in the future, and for those obviously that I want to see the more than once. Overall I am very happy with the player with my not very expensive Element 65 inch 4k television (it does not have HDR). It looks like it upscales better than the other Samsung upscaler BR (and) the Sony one, too.

Software?

Specifically what software is preloaded onto this laptop?
I remembered it came with Norton 30 days antivirus. It also came with Cyberlink PowerDVD 12 (to play DVD movies).

It also comes with 30 day version of Microsoft office 2013. I undeleted that and I'm using Oracle Open Office instead.

The computer is fast enough for real-time voice dictation. I'm using it right now to write this answer with Dragon Medical.

Does this laptop definitely come with Windows 8.1 installed?

I've seen other laptops on here advertised as coming with 8.1 preinstalled, but then read thru the reviews and find some people saying theirs came with Windows 8 and they had to upgrade to 8.1 on their own, and others saying that their laptop actually did come with 8.1 installed. I'm guessing it's bc the older stock came out before 8.1 and the newer after, so it depends on which batch your laptop was shipped from. But, again, just a guess. I know I can do the upgrade to 8.1 for free, but really don't want to go thru the hassle, so I'd prefer it to already be installed. Thx in advance!
Mine did. You will spend an entire day downloading patches and service packs anyway. I knew this was going to happen, and Toshiba cannot be blamed for it.

Will this laptop be good for video editing

I believe it will work but slowly. It does not have the fastest processor, but it is fast enough to do real-time voice dictation, which I am doing now with Dragon Medical (their high end version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking program.)

If you expect fast results, I'm not sure that you will be happy with it. But it is good for general computer uses—homework, watch movies, general office work and go on the Internet.

It comes with the 30 day version of Microsoft Office. I deleted it and installed Oracle Open Office instead.
