Nice Unit, but Could Be Better
on January 5, 2021
Posted by: CMCMom29
from Michigan
I can sum up the initial experience testing the Samsung HW-Q950T Soundbar in one word.
Frustrating.
At least, that was lasting impression.
This unit replaced a Sony soundbar system that I’ve had for a couple of years. It was good, but in looking at the specs for the Samsung, I thought I could use an upgrade.
First thing – it comes in a giant box. It’s also a behemoth. I would recommend having a helper bring the unit it and to help install it. I like feeling like I’m getting quality product, but I am stymied as to why this is SO heavy. It makes my Sony feel like a paperweight in comparison.
Second, the soundbar is long. It took up the length of the shelf of my TV stand. You are either going to want to have it sitting in the open on a cabinet or mounted on the wall. It’s not going to fit in a smaller entertainment center.
Third, oh my goodness…it’s a dog hair MAGNET. I took the woofer out of the box and set it on the floor; it seemed to instantly suck up all the dog hair in my carpet, even though I had recently vacuumed. I’m going to invest in some lint rollers to clean the unit. I can only imagine what dust will do to it.
OK, now to setup and functionality…
The manual is straightforward, almost to a fault. It really only gives you the basics. I had to figure out a lot on my own. After I had finished setup, I then found the online version of the manual was much more detailed. You can find it on the product page for this item on Samsung’s site.
Setup is easier if you have a Samsung mobile phone and the Smart Things app. It’s designed to work with the app seamlessly. This presents other problems which I will talk about as we go along.
The first set of instructions is the precise order you have to put the unit online in order to connect properly. It goes subwoofer --> left rear speaker --> right rear speaker --> soundbar. You can manually connect it as well, if for some reason the setup doesn’t take on its own.
Then you need to connect it to your TV. I thought one of the benefits I was getting was being able to connect wirelessly. Unfortunately, these features are specific to Samsung TVs. My living room TV is a Hisense 4K, which doesn’t have Bluetooth or a wi-fi connection for use with this soundbar. I used the HDMI cable that came with the Soundbar to connect to the TV. I used existing HDMI cables I had to connect to my cable box and my Roku.
This is where I realize the display in on THE TOP of the unit. Not only the TOP, but the backside of the TOP. The display is a very small window. Who designed this? I couldn’t see anything sitting in a chair right in front of my TV while I was installing this, let alone sitting in my recliner while watching a movie. My Sony had a front display that was easy to read from anywhere in the room. The Sony remote also had buttons for each input and all the functions. The Samsung remote is spartan in comparison.
Which leads to the Smart Things app. The connection between the app and the soundbar was effortless. Didn’t provide a lot of instructions, though. I figured out that the inputs could be changed on the app. You also had to trust the app to make the connection since you couldn’t see the display on the soundbar.
I also had to use the phone to adjust the volume and sound effects. The remote, anytime I hit VOL it would mute the TV. Right above the VOL button was dedicated MUTE button. I thought maybe something was wrong with the remote. I found, once I read the more detailed manual with a diagram, you have to press the button up or down for VOL and push in/out for MUTE. I am still confused by why you need TWO MUTE buttons on the same remote. A remote should be the simplest item in the box. Children should be able to use it – why are we making the remote an art piece rather than a practical item? If Mom & Dad are around to use their phones, you’re OK if you can’t figure out the remote. With the Smart Things app, the functionality isn’t intuitive.
For my 4K input and HD audio test, I used my Roku Premiere (2017 version) to stream the Disney+ Ultra HD version of “The Avengers”. I had watched the movie enough times to know what it HAD sounded like with my previous set up.
OK, now HERE is where the rubber meets the road. This is why I wanted to try a Samsung Soundbar.
THE. SOUND. WAS. UNBELIEVEABLE!
The floor shook. The sound enveloped the room with a richness I hadn’t heard before. I started hearing sounds and effects in the soundtrack that I hadn’t recalled hearing before. I would have happily watched the movie again to see what other details I could pick up, but it was late and the children trying to sleep weren’t appreciating feeling the sound reverberate in their rooms.
The actual performance was great, but the experience of setting it up and the basic use of it overshadowed my enjoyment of the product at first. I debated whether or not to reinstall the Sony bar, regardless of the superiority of the Samsung in sound.
I'm glad I didn't, though. In the month or so I've been using it, it's grown on me and now I wouldn't go back. I watched "WW84" via HBO Max (I liked the movie; your mileage may vary) and the sound was delightful.

Great for Holidays
on November 18, 2020
Posted by: CMCMom29
from Michigan
Usually around the Holidays, I will put two potted lighted artificial pine trees on our stoop. In years past, I’ve used an outdoor timer or a remote system that requires me to remember to turn them on at night.
Sometimes timers are hard to set or don’t last the season. The remotes get lost and then you have to buy a new unit.
Since it was about time to put up my trees again, I was eager to try the Wemo WiFi Smart Outdoor Plug.
Set up was easy. If you have a Wemo account, you would use your existing app and sign in to add the plug to your home. If not an existing customer, you can download the Wemo app and register for an account there.
One note here that I ran into and doesn’t take away from the review of the unit. The app gave me a suggestion to learn more about the plug and how to set it. When I clicked on their link, though, I was taken to a listing for a dimmer. I was a bit confused by that.
Basically, you click the add button and follow the prompts to set up the unit and connect it to your WiFi.
When I went to set my times, however, I discovered that I could not do that in one rule set. I had to make a rule on when to turn on and another to turn off. With other non-smart plugs I’ve owned, you could set them from sunset to sunrise, or for certain times. I was a bit dismayed in trying to figure out how to program this properly.
You can name your plug with what it is controlling. I named mine “Christmas Trees” (very original, I know). I was able to set up one rule to have the trees come on at 5:30 pm and another rule to control how many hours I wanted it to run.
It works like a charm.
IF, for some reason, I want to turn them off, there is a power button next to the name of the device so you can turn them off and on again as desired without using the time.
One suggestion I’d offer is to make a larger unit, or a strip where you could program multiple routines. People use so many lighted decorations now, and outlets outside of the home aren’t always available.

Wonderful Mic That is Full of Features
on November 1, 2020
Posted by: CMCMom29
from Michigan
WOW.
You might think that I’m referring to World of Warcraft there…and I am…
…but also…
WOOOOOOOOOOOW.
This microphone is AWESOME. First off, it’s well packaged. I would keep the inner box with the foam insert in case you ever need to store it (although I don’t know why you’d EVER pack this away).
Secondly, it’s beautiful. The unit is a charcoal grey with gold trim. At the base, there are runes from World of Warcraft (WoW) etched on the base. On the underside of the microphone, there is a headphone jack and a recess for use with a microphone arm or stand. It reminds me of an award that one might get FOR broadcasting instead of USING it for broadcasting. It’s that sharp.
Setup is easy. You download software from Logitech (I didn’t realize that Blue was part of the same company). This is where you will find the software that has the special WoW effects. The unit is wired (USB cable included). I was a little surprised by that, but it could be because the sound is better that way.
I also researched other software that I could use with the mic. I downloaded Audacity for free. I also downloaded Blue Sherpa, which said it worked with this model, but my mic wasn’t being read by the software.
The sound is fantastic. The effects are so cool. There are sound effects with the Sampler, such as different Creatures and Spells.
Just using your voice, you can do so many things. You can record a sample of your own voice and then modify it with different effects. There are multiple modes for using the mic just as it is (without the added WoW features). The button on the front is also customizable. You can change colors, you can use as a mic, or mic and headphones together (with the headphones plugged into the mic), or direct monitoring. The LED lights can also be programmed for metering the sound.
Unlike other products I’ve tried, this unit has a laminated card made to stand up on your desk with the different features outlined on how to use. How clever is that?
Run, don’t walk, to pick one of these mics up. It would make a WONDERFUL gift for the streamer in your life.

Great Monitor
on October 28, 2020
Posted by: CMCMom29
from Michigan
I love this Dell Monitor. It’s an upgrade for me from a 20” screen. My old monitor was so old…
{How old was it?}
…it was so old that it still used a serial port. I had to use a serial to HDMI converter to use it with my current tower.
This Dell Monitor was simple to set up and install. I used an HDMI cable (included) to connect to my computer, plugged the monitor into the power, and turned it on.
The screen itself is a matte finish. I would not say it is fingerprint proof, as I somehow got something on the screen while attaching the stand that caused streaks. They did not just wipe off as I expected, but they did come off. The resolution is easy on my eyes and my work is easier to see.
The unit is large without being too overwhelming for my small desk. If space is a limitation, though, you may want to consider getting a monitor arm.
I would recommend to anyone considering getting a new monitor.

Nice, Portable Option for Teeth Cleaning on the Go
on October 26, 2020
Posted by: CMCMom29
from Michigan
I currently have a Philips Sonicare Rechargeable toothbrush. However, over the past year or so, I’ve heard many commercials about Quip, especially on Satellite Radio and podcasts. I was curious about the product and appreciated getting a chance to try one.
The Quip comes in a simple, environmentally friendly box. The version I tried is the black metal finish Quip. Inside the box is a smoke-colored translucent plastic tube with one rounded end and the other end a screw-on cap. You unscrew the cap to remove the brush and cover. Now, the instructions will tell you to dispose of this container, but I kept mine because it completely enclosed the brush. If nothing else, it would make a great case for travel.
The brush is sitting inside its cap like a stand. You can pull this up over the brush to store it.
The feature I found odd was a tacky strip on the side of the brush handle. This is supposed to allow you to stick the brush on a mirror or other surface when not in use. However, I found this off-putting. For one, it feels sticky in your hand as you hold it, and for two, it seemed like something that also would attract dirt or debris and would be hard to clean. I replaced the decal over the sticky strip and don’t plan on using it.
The brush can be used in conjuncture with an app that is connected via Bluetooth. The app was simple to set up and connect with the brush. It allows you to track your brushing time and win virtual awards inside the app marking your progress.
The unit also comes with a coupon for one shipment of extra supplies. Quip offers a service to replenish supplies for the brush, such as a new brush head, new batteries (the unit itself is not rechargeable), floss, and toothpaste. You can choose one or all the supplies to set up on subscription. The couple covers up to $15 of your first shipment of supplies. So, in approximately 3 months, I will receive a new brush head, new batteries, and floss.
The unit is sleek and compact, as compared to my Sonicare. On the back of the brush head is a tongue scraper. The power button is the letter “Q” and is the only control on the brush.
As I am used to the power in the Sonicare, comparatively the Quip vibrates in a more subdued manner. The unit and the app are there to encourage you to brush each quadrant of your mouth for the proper amount of time. The brush will give you a little pulse to signal you to move on to another quadrant.
I, myself, am not a model brusher of teeth. I don’t have a lot of patience to brush each section for the recommended amount of time. I prefer the power of the Sonicare to the subtle vibrations of Quip.
The brush is comfortable to use. It has weight to it so that it feels balanced but not heavy. The metal handle is sleek and smooth to the touch. It is smaller in overall size, though, than my Sonicare.
I feel that the Quip is a very nice brush to travel with, or to carry with you in a briefcase or a gym bag so you can have a power toothbrush on the go. However, for home use, I will stick with my Sonicare.

Nice Compact Carpet Cleaner
on October 13, 2020
Posted by: CMCMom29

I have three children and as many dogs, two of them being puppies. Puppies have accidents, especially bull-headed ones as I have. This product was made for my household.
The unit is pretty basic. It’s fully assembled when you take it out of the box. It comes with two brush heads – one a bristle brush, one a rubber brush for pet messes. That is the only part you have to attach. It was a bit heavier than I expected, but it wasn’t hard to carry.
The unit comes with a small bottle of Paws & Claws Spot Cleaner, which is just enough to fill the tank. No water is needed to mix with the cleaner. That’s a big bonus for me. I have floor machines that required mix HOT water with cleaner, which was messy and, when the temp of the water cooled, you’d have to throw it out. With this unit, you dump in the cleaner and go.
One thing I will note here is that I had some leakage from the small rubber gasket at the top of the cleaning fluid reservoir. You have to remove and invert the container in order to fill it. A few drops escaped from the gasket. There was moisture laying on the top of the container after I reinstalled it (I try to capture it in a photo, attached to this review). I wasn’t crazy about that.
The box has a Quick Start Guide for using the product on the box flap.
I had the perfect opportunity to try the unit when one of my pups decided to do their business in one of our bedrooms. Full disclosure: I did pre-treat the stain using an enzyme-based spray.
The PowerDash Go is easy to use. You plug it in, turn it on, use the hose/brush attachment to shoot cleaning fluid on the carpet and vacuum it up.
Another thing to note is that I wish that either the reservoir was larger, or it came with a larger bottle of fluid (or two of the small bottles, maybe). I used all of the fluid to clean the mess on our rug. The “business” came up right off the carpet. No remnants remained. The smell was pleasant – no overpowering scents here.
It was easy to clean. I just removed the dirty water container, dumped it into the sink, gave a quick rinse, and it was ready to go again (well, after I get more cleaner).
It’s made in the USA, too! Bonus!
If you have an active household, this will be a great spot cleaner for you.

Only Mediocre

I am late convert to air frying. When the big-name brand fryer first came out, it was a bit out of my reach, so I ordered a store brand version. Wasn’t impressed with the performance, ended up selling it.
I recently was able to purchase that brand name fryer and fell in love with it. My steaks came out flavorful. It made my roasted red potatoes yummy, and my chicken was juicy, not dried out as it did in the oven.
I soon discovered that it would be a good idea to have a second fryer for sides so I could cook in both at the same time. I jumped at the chance to review the Bella Pro Series fryer because of the fact that (a) it air fried, (b) made pizza, which is a favorite in our house, and (c) looked like a mini oven.
I wanted to like it, y’all. I really did. I have very mixed feelings on the product.
My other fryer opens from the top, and has a fry basket insert, as well as a grill insert. This unit comes with two crisper racks, one drip pan, one pizza pan, and a rotisserie skewer. There are no shelves other than the crisper racks themselves. I wish that it had come with some kind of baking pan, a basket, or even a small jellyroll pan. As I said, I like to fry potatoes and, in this unit, I would have to carefully place the cubes on a crisper rack that has no sides at all. My other fryer, I can just dump them in the basket once I season them.
The unit is heavy, so I would make a home on your counter and plan on leaving it there. It’s attractive and will match most kitchens. It takes up a lot of room, both height and width wise. If you have a small kitchen, even though it’s multifunctional, it may not work for you.
One thing that stood out to me while reading the manual was that it is recommend that you use some non-plastic mat or coasters to keep the feet (plasticizers) from “migrating” (read: melting) onto your counter. Yikes. I ordered a silicone mat that I hope will work; I didn’t get it in time for this review. This is not something I expected from a unit such as this.
Something I didn’t see in the manual was if the inserts were dishwasher safe. I have washed them in the dishwasher and so far, no worse for wear.
For testing, I made steak, chicken, rolls, and a frozen pizza.
For the steak and chicken, I place the meat on one of the crisper racks and had the drip pan underneath. Because the crisper has so many holes in it, you’ll want to keep the crisper on the drip pan until you put them in the oven, or use a plate; otherwise the meat will basically be sitting on your counter while you prep it. Both meats came out juicy and flavorful. No issues with doneness.
For the rolls, I had to take the crisper pan, place some foil over that, and then put the bread on it (the rolls were to be baked inside their foil packaging). I did this because I was afraid of dye transfer from the labels on the bag. I didn’t feel I could use a baking pan because (a) I don’t know if I have one the appropriate size, and (b) the crisper racks are very thin, almost flimsy. Not a lot of strength implied there.
The pizza was most disappointing. The pizza was too big for the pan it came with, so I put the pizza on a crisper rack. I had to smush the pizza a bit to get it to fit (I thought frozen pizzas were 10” normally).
After the initial 8-minute preset, the cheese was melted but the dough looked underdone. I cooked it another 8 minutes. The top was then overcooked, yet the dough remained undercooked. My family said it was fine, but I couldn’t get myself to try it.
All in all, I wasn’t impressed with this unit. It looks attractive, it’s easy to use, and good for some uses. The inside looks like another oven I will have to clean because there’s very little keeping the food and grease from touching the inside of the unit. The last thing I need is something else to clean.

Nice Unit for a Beginner
on September 27, 2020
Posted by: CMCMom29
from Michigan
In the past, I was intrigued by juicers. People who I knew that used them swore by them. One even lost weight drinking fresh, homemade juice. I would talk myself out of buying one, though.
So, when I had the change to test the Oster Stainless Steel Self-Cleaning Professional Juice Extractor, I jumped at the chance.
It comes nearly fully assembled. The unit is quite attractive on the counter. It will match any other stainless appliances that you may have in your kitchen. It is a bit heavy, though, so I wouldn’t plan on moving this from, say, a lower cabinet when not in use, to the counter.
I had a hard time picking a recipe for my first foray into juicing. I didn’t want anything too complicated nor did I want to buy out the produce section for my trial. I chose a simple Spinach Apple Juice drink.
The recipe called for 1 bunch of spinach, 2 apples (make sure you remove all seeds and stems from your apples; otherwise they will release small amounts of cyanide), and half a lemon.
Well, silly me, I tried to recall the recipe from memory, and I thought it called for 2 lemons. My lemons were quite small, so I used 4, along with the 2 apples, and 2 handfuls of spinach.
I cut up the fruit into wedges and tried to take the bulk of rind off the lemon before putting into the chute. The food chute is quite large, and I had no issues with the juicer grinding things up.
The juice was extracted easily. It didn’t yield much; approx. one serving, as the photos show. The glass I used is violet and holds 16 oz. The juice itself was green.
The juice turned out super tart, which is expected when you use 4 lemons instead of a half. I tried adding about a half tsp. of sugar to it and it still was too tart.
The next step was to clean the unit. I followed the instructions to use the cleaning feature on the juicer. It’s easy to do – you fill the pusher with water as directed, turn the dial to cleaning mode, and it will run water through the machine.
Now, this is not a thorough clean. It flushes water through the unit, but your parts won’t come all the way clean. At least, mine didn’t.
The stainless basket was mostly clean, which some residue left, which you can see in the photo. It was easy to take apart, though, so I will plan on washing the parts later.
This is a very nice juicer for a beginner like me. I just will need to learn how to adjust the ingredients to make a more edible product next time. {smile}

The uHoo Smart Indoor Air Quality Monitor is one of those gizmos that you don’t know that you need until you get one.
The unit is designed to detect allergens and toxins in the air. I suffer from allergies year-round, I have dogs, and I have children. There is a lot of stuff in our air so I was curious as to what this would measure.
The unit was easy to set up. You take it out of the box, plug it in, download the app from your favorite app store, and off you go. You follow the prompts in the app to set up. You will need to let the unit run for about three days before you start to see accurate results.
This thing monitors stuff I didn’t realize were things. What’s a TVOC? PM2.5? I’m not sure, but the uHoo monitors it.
I have CO2 monitors in the home and have never had one go off. However, the uHoo alerted me via push notification that my CO2 levels were higher than recommended. The next day, I had the windows open for a while and the level went down.
What became annoying, though, was a stream of constant alerts. It told me that the humidity was high and that I should turn my thermostat down. I did so. Then it alerted me that my home was colder than usual and to turn my thermostat up. Huh?
This went back and forth until I finally shut off the push notifications. It was too much. Seems to me it is a little too sensitive, maybe? It also defeats some of the purpose if I have to turn off the notifications because there are too many of them. It’s the app that cried wolf. Now, how will I know if I’m in a danger zone?
For that reason, I took off one star. It’s a really interesting item to have, but it might need a bit of tweaking to be really helpful.

First impression of the kit is that it is HEAVY. You definitely feel like you are getting your money’s worth in the heft of the product.
Logitech makes quality products, and this is no exception. The wheel feels great in your hands. The grip material, the hint of blue, the buttons on the control, all make it great to look upon. It’s a sharp product. It even has new car smell to go with the car grill detail that it has on the front of the unit.
The unit is simple to set up. It comes with a small brochure showing you how to connect it. One note here is that there is a web site included with the materials that would not come up for me. I’m not sure if it’s a bad address or something yet to be set up. I had to go to Logitech’s site to find the product information. The only download available is the User’s Manual.
I first tried to use the wheel with a gaming laptop. I wanted to use it to play NASCAR 4 on Steam. However, we couldn’t get it to work at all. Because there were no downloadable drivers, I couldn’t figure out why the game wasn’t responding to the wheel controls.

I then ordered NASCAR 4 for Xbox One to see how it would respond there. The wheel worked seamlessly with the Xbox One.
The kit is two main parts – the wheel and the pedals. The wheel clamps to the table and the pedals sit on our carpet. The challenge I faced here was that the units kept moving on me. The wheel would shake during use (more on that later) and then fall off the table. The table I have was a small adjustable table I use for laptops, with a smooth laminate top that is close to 1” thick. I clamped the unit as tightly as possible, but it still would slide off. I would recommend some sort of gripping material on the edge of the clamps to improve the hold.
The pedals also would slide on me. I drove with the pedal pushed to the floor and then would notice that, as I pressed down, the unit would move, and I would periodically have to adjust the unit back into place.
Now, as far as the game play…it was AWESOME. Trying to play a driving game using a controller loses something in translation. This felt like I was actually driving vs. just playing a game. Just for fun, I would crash into walls and other cars to see how it would react. The wheel would shake and shimmy in response to the impact (then it would move, and I’d have to re-clamp it onto the table). The wheel moved smoothly and responded well; the pedals felt natural. I had a ball.
You can fine tune the wheel in seemingly unlimited configurations. The game had several levels to drive in, which all had some preset options. You could customize your wheel to your liking within those levels. I don’t see how you could ever get bored using this kit.
I am extremely happy with this product.
I recommend this to anyone.

Only the left earbud will work for me when I'm trying to use both. What do I do?

I found that you have to turn on both when using. Also, make sure the buds are paired to each other per the unit's directions.
