$12.99, That's it?

Ulver does it again, this time bringing to us a sort of Chaos/Opera/Electronic/Maelstrom. With this album, Ulver reaches for new hieghts by experimenting with strange combinations of "instruments" including chimes, brass, jazz ensambles and even a chanting chorus. The songs get progressively faster and chaotic as the album plays. It starts off very slow and downbeat with the introductory song "Dressed in Black." Compare that to the final track, "Operator", which is a fast-pace surge through blaringly epic vocals and I think I even heard xylaphones being pounded. I have faith in Ulver, and this album hones it. I preordered this album for $70. I didn't care then and I don't care now. And for $13 there's absolutely no reason not to pick this up. Listen to it immediately.
What's great about it: Experimentation at it's best.
What's not so great: N/A

Perfect for Someone Looking for Something New

A Quick Fix of Melancholy is not for everybody, but it may be my favorite Ulver release. It's twenty minutes of well produced sadness and poetry. The first track, "Little Blue Bird" begins with a startling upstart of strings that will catch your immediate attention. It's quickly joined by electronic noise and glitches which then lead to Garm's voice, deep and perverse. The next track, an instrumental, will lead you through a bizarre world of noise and electronic bells. The drumming on this track is flawless and sounds as if it were underwater. Unlike anything I've ever heard. The third track simply called "Vowels" is possibly the best on the EP. It's a haunting hymn of the emotionality of human beings. Garm uses his singing to toss the listener back and forth by changing pitch effortlessly. The final track is a remix of a song from their second album, Kveldssanger, an album consisting of nothing but acoustic guitar and a capella singing, into a fantastic display of music. Like I said, this EP is not for everyone, but it's some of the best music I've ever heard. So if you're looking for a new sound and you're open to different music, I strongly urge you to purchase this EP.
What's great about it: The Perfect Amount of Depression
What's not so great: There are no cons with Ulver.

Better Than Ever.

The lastest album from Ulver offers yet another side to the ever-changing face of the band. For Shadows of the Sun, Ulver went with a more relaxing yet depressing mood. The album is not crowded with lots of inane filler lyrics. Most songs don't have more than fifty or sixty words, leaving the listener plenty of time to concentrate on the master-crafted melodies. Very pronounced string instruments and Garm's moving, athmospheric voice give a dismal yet calming tone to the music. This is most seen on the final track, "What Happened?" with a beautiful outro of violins and cello. In short, Ulver, yet again, does not disappoint. Four years of waiting were well worth it. Pick it up as soon as you can.
What's great about it: Beautiful Vocals, Clear and presice Instruments.
What's not so great: Only 40 minutes! Want More!
