The collector's edition DVD of Clerks is a must-have for fans of the film and its director, Kevin Smith. Shot in black-and-white for less than $28,000, this movie is not going to strain any home theaters. However, the package includes a number of fine extras. Several deleted scenes are merely longer versions of scenes that were made shorter for the final cut. There's an alternate ending that may change the way some fans see the film forever. (Both of these sections are considerably grainier than the film proper.) There's also the music video of the movie's theme song, "Can't Even Tell" by Soul Asylum, which is also directed by Smith and features a re-enactment of the movie's famous rooftop hockey scene. The extra that best embodies the film, however, is the commentary track. Recorded during the shooting of Smith's second film, Mallrats, the track features Smith (who also played Silent Bob), producer Scott Mosier (who appears in the film as well), Brian O'Halloran (Dante Hicks), multiple bit player Walter Flanagan, Clerks "historian" Vincent Pereira, cinematographer David Klein, Malcolm Ingram from Film Threat magazine, Mallrats producer James Jacks, and Jason Mewes (Jay). The results are not quite as chaotic as one might expect; Smith dominates the commentary, the input of the others is frequently inaudible, and Mewes spends much of the film's running time in an alcohol-induced state of unconsciousness. The DVD includes reasonably faithful English subtitles.

This three-disc set commemorating the tenth anniversary of Kevin Smith low-budget debut feature, Clerks, would seem to be the definitive DVD release of the film. The original DVD release of the film was a highly entertaining affair featuring one of the funniest commentary tracks ever recorded. That commentary is reproduced here along with a transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film. The highlight of this set for Smith's hardcore fans would be the inclusion of Smith's initial 105-minute cut of the movie. Included with that version of the film is a brand-new commentary featuring all of the usual suspects -- Smith, Scott Mosier, Jason Mewes, Brian O'Halloran, and Jeff Anderson. A third disc features an extensive documentary on the making of the film. Also scattered on the discs are trailers, deleted scenes, music videos, reviews, a still photo gallery, a tenth anniversary Q & A session, and excerpts from Smith's personal journals. This is the definitive version of what many believe is the definitive slacker comedy.
