Stuart Baird's action blockbuster Executive Decision comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is impressively rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. English, French, and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials are limited to production notes. Sure to please genre enthusiasts, this Warner Bros. disc does a superb job of presenting the sound and picture, but there is little else on this release.

John Travolta returns as the dancing Tony Manero in the sequel to Saturday Night Fever, Staying Alive. The film is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and appears to be in very good shape, save for a few imperfections along the way. While the color patterns and black levels are all solid and well saturated, there are a few instances where grain and edge enhancement is visible. Otherwise, this is a decent looking print that should please fans looking for more thrilling Bee-Gees action. The soundtrack has been remastered into a new Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround mix that doesn't sound much different than the Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround soundtrack that's also available on this disc. Though there are a few instances where the soundtrack kicks in a bit more than usual, the bulk of this 5.1 track is located in mainly the front and center speakers. All aspects of the soundtrack are free and clear of any excessive hiss or distortion. On par with most Paramount catalog DVD releases these days, Staying Alive doesn't sport a single extra feature.

After spending years consigned to one half of a double-feature disc, David Cronenberg's brilliantly personalized take on The Fly has received a special edition worthy of its merits. Starting off the package is a slick new transfer; the video offers a slight but noticeable improvement on the past edition, with a richer sense of color and detail as well as mastering for high-definition. The audio portion of the disc offers effective 5.1 Dolby and DTS mixes guaranteed to give the viewer's stereo system a workout. The first disc also features an excellent commentary track from Cronenberg that covers everything from technical and aesthetic details to on-the-set memories in the director's wry, understated style. The second disc is where the real treats begin for the film's longtime fans. First up is a new epic-length documentary on the making of The Fly that covers everything one could ever want to know about the film (with the selection of optional scene extensions, it can go all the way up to two hours and 45 minutes). This might be too much of a good thing for some viewers but the producers' willingness to leave no stone unturned is truly impressive. There's also a gallery of deleted scenes that have been painstakingly reconstructed and given new sound mixes for this disc -- fans of the film will flip over the often discussed but rarely seen "Monkey Cat" sequence. The viewer's behind-the-scenes knowledge is further extended with a series of film tests, including an amusing bit where Cronenberg camps it up in a fly costume on the film's revolving set. Elsewhere, the second disc features an elaborate series of still galleries that cover everything from the expected stills and conceptual art to reproductions of script drafts and the George Langelaan short story that inspired all the Fly films. Rounding out the disc is a generous trailer collection that includes all the theatrical and television trailers for the 1986 version of The Fly as well as trailers from The Fly 2, the 1958 version of The Fly, and The Return of the Fly. In short, this is a stellar DVD package, and fans of horror and sci-fi classics will be thrilled with its thorough excellence.

This could very well be the most unexpected special edition of 2005. 20th Century Fox has truly pulled out all the stops here to make this special edition an ideal companion piece with their recent special edition of the 1986 version of The Fly. The first disc includes a handsome transfer of The Fly 2; it boasts a new high-definition, anamorphic widescreen transfer that captures the film's shadowy look to nice effect and an effective set of Dolby 5.1 and DTS stereo options. Also on the first disc is a commentary track with director Chris Walas and genre expert Bob Burns; it's fairly lightweight but does offer some good behind-the-scenes story and a winning sense of enthusiasm for the film. Rounding out the first disc is a pair of deleted scenes that were cut after previews. Seeing them will leave no doubt as to why they were cut, but they're interesting to see nonetheless. Extra-wise, things get even better on the second disc. First up, is a pair of documentaries: "Transformations" offers a thorough overview of The Fly 2's genesis and "The Fly Papers" is an excellent documentary that covers the history of all five Fly films produced by 20th Century Fox. Other featurettes on the disc include the original EPK for The Fly 2, a comprehensive series of the behind-the-scenes clips that illustrate the creation of the film's various special effects, and an enlightening chat with composer Christopher Young that covers his approach to scoring The Fly 2. Fans will also be pleased with a series of three storyboard-to-film comparisons that feature commentary with Walas. Rounding out the disc is a trailer collection plus elaborate galleries of promotional materials, conceptual art, and stills. In short, this is a better package of material than even the film's fans could have expected, and 20th Century Fox deserves praise for going the extra mile.

Paul Verhoeven's Total Recall gets the deluxe treatment from Artisan on this release. The disc offers a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Stereo. English, French, and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Verhoeven and star Arnold Schwarzenegger, a pair of featurettes, a photo gallery, trailers, television promotional spots, and storyboards. This is a superb disc from Artisan.

The action comedy Burglar comes to DVD from Warner Home Video with a full frame 1.33:1 transfer. The audio is available in Dolby Digital Surround Sound in English and Dolby Digital 1.0 in French. This is a perfectly reasonable DVD release for this film.

IS IT WORTH PAYING SOMEONE TO CALABRATE OR TWEEK THE SETTINGS ON MY SAMSUNG 52A650 LCD

Yes!! It is very much worth it. They make your tv look the very best that it can in your setting. I would recommend anyone doing this with a tv 42" or larger.
