Dwight H. Little directs Bruce Lee's son, Brandon Lee, in the action-packed Rapid Fire, which comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. A closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 4.0, while French and Spanish soundtracks have been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. English subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a profile of Brandon Lee, a making-of featurette, and the theatrical trailer. Considering the low list price, this is a very good disc from 20th Century Fox.

Michael J. Fox and James Woods star in the action-comedy The Hard Way. Universal has done a nice job of making sure this 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is clear of any intrusive defects or imperfections. Besides the smallest amount of edge enhancement, this image appears to feature solid black levels and bright color patterns. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English. The audio mix on this disc is excellent with fervent use of both the front and rear speakers, making The Hard Way a great movie when complimented by a home theater system. All aspects of the soundtrack are free and clear of any excessive hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc are English and Spanish subtitles. While The Hard Way isn't jam packed with extras, the disc does include a few well-produced supplements. Included on this DVD is a short "Making Of" featurette which sports a few standard interviews with the cast and crew, a music video for the song "Mama Said Knock You Out" by LL Cool J, some thin production notes, cast and crew info, and a theatrical trailer for the film.

Arthur Rankin and Jules Bass apply their distinctive animation technique to J.R.R. Tolkien's prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy on this DVD release of The Hobbit. The film is presented in a full-frame standard transfer with an aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Mono. English, Spanish, and French subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include background information on Tolkien, as well as the filmmakers themselves.

This animated version of the fantasy novel by J.R.R. Tolkien comes to DVD in a standard full-screen picture format (1.33:1), with no widescreen option and only a single audio track option, English (Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono). Subtitles are available in English, Spanish, and French. Special features are limited to some "highlights" dealing with Tolkien and the filmmakers. Because the audio was not remastered for this DVD version of the film, the mono-only sound quality is flat and poor, and in places the animation is somewhat jerky. The plastic DVD case includes a brief chapter index.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround soundtrack is in English and French. English closed captions are also available. The special R-rated version of Dennis Dugan's silly sex comedy Saving Silverman comes to DVD with this release. Loaded with bonus features, the disc should be a delight for fans of the film. The extras include audio commentary by Dugan, and outtakes reel, web links, theatrical trailers, filmographies, production notes, and scene selections. As if that weren't enough, the film is presented in an impressive widescreen 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer along with the standard 1.33:1 pan-and-scan. Add to that English language soundtracks in Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Stereo, and the disc is a delight for viewers. English and French subtitles are also available.

Experience all the brutality of the popular anime saga in this ambitious live adaptation -- coming to DVD from First Look Entertainment. The feature is presented in 1.33:1 full-frame, and audiences will no doubt feel the impact of every punch thanks to a solid English Dolby Digital Stereo mix. Despite the lack of extra features, viewers will likely be left exhausted enough after viewing this endlessly violent epic.

This fantasy-comedy for the whole family gets a respectable presentation for its release on DVD. Little Monsters has been transferred to disc in pan-and-scan format at the full-screen aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo; the dialogue is in English, with optional subtitles in English, French and Spanish. The movie's original trailer has been included as a bonus.

Jeremy Kagan's family-friendly adventure drama The Journey of Natty Gann comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that fails to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. There are no subtitles, but the soundtrack is closed-captioned. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence, marking this as a pedestrian release from Disney/Buena Vista that will be of little interest to anyone other than a genre enthusiast.

After almost 15 years comes Stripes: The Extended Cut, featuring 18 minutes of deleted scenes long thought to be extinct in the Salt Mine archives of good old Hollywood. Columbia Home Entertainment presents Ivan Reitman's hilarious military comedy that boosted enlistments and provided Bill Murray with an early hit under his belt around the time of his SNL years. The movie itself has been given a needed face-lift, with an anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen transfer and a high-definition 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack that is a step and a half up from the shoddy presentations of old. With the option of watching the theatrical cut or the extended cut, with onscreen pop-ups that signal each cut scene, the DVD goes a long way to present both versions in all their glory. Six deleted scenes are presented, including the infamous seven-minute Columbian airdrop scene along with another racy scene with Murray and none other than late-'70s/early-'80s heartthrob P.J. Soles. While most of the scenes are arguably unnecessary, it's good to see that they're all quite funny and work in and out of the finished film. Extra care was obviously put into them, with Reitman himself tackling a few scenes again in the editing room just to make sure the right takes and comedic rhythms were worked out this time. Those stories and many others are vividly told both in the fun commentary with the director and writer/producer Dan Goldberg and the hour-long documentary that's culled from interviews with much of the main cast, including Judge Reinhold and a bizarre black-lit interview with the usually reclusive Murray. With the original theatrical trailer rounding out the list of extras, the Stripes: Extended Cut DVD is a loving tribute to an '80s classic that has cemented its place in comedy history, and with this version, is now able to entertain in vastly new ways for the young and old alike.
