Starring Steve Guttenberg and Ally Sheedy, the 1986 sci-fi comedy Short Circuit centers on a robot who gains consciousness after being struck by lightning. Guttenberg and Sheedy fall in love while helping the charming robot escape the U.S. government. This bare-bones DVD release offers no bonus features, but treats the film nicely with a widescreen transfer and multiple English soundtracks in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and Dolby Digital Stereo. Previously, in 2000, a nicely loaded edition with director commentary and production material was released.

The Bridge on the River Kwai, one of the greatest films ever made, is given the appropriate reverential treatment by Columbia TriStar on the two-disc DVD of director David Lean's World War II prisoner of war epic that netted seven Oscars. For a film nearly half a century old, the transfer on the first disc is absolutely gorgeous. The jungle colors pop out so vividly it seems like the film was shot yesterday. The movie is presented in a special widescreen version that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. As for the soundtrack, the jungle never sounded so good; the soundtrack has been remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Disc one also contains an isolated musical score and special DVD-ROM components. The second disc is nothing but special features, including a making-of documentary, a period feature about the making of the film, and a short film narrated by star William Holden that compares and contrasts movies with novels. A photo gallery, talent files, and an homage by filmmaker John Milius completes disc two. A collectible booklet accompanies the double-disc set.

Bob Sagat directs Norm MacDonald in his first leading man role in Dirty Work, which comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. Subtitles are accessible in both of those languages as well. Supplemental materials include the original theatrical trailer, and a booklet containing information about the film's production. This is a fine release from MGM/UA.

Like DVDs of many older movies, the Warner Bros. DVD of Ladyhawke is nice to look at and listen to as far as picture quality and sound goes, but short of special features. Ladyhawke is the story of a man (Rutger Hauer) and a woman (Michelle Pfeiffer) who are lovers cursed by an evil enchantment that keeps them apart when they're together. Matthew Broderick also stars as a pickpocket and petty thief who aids them in their effort to break the curse. The movie is an early one in both the careers of Broderick and Pfeiffer, and as such interesting from that perspective, if not for the unique subject matter. The DVD presents the movie in a standard full-frame version on one side, and in widescreen on the other side. The soundtrack has been remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. The only real extras on the disc, beside the usual DVD features (scene access, interactive menus), are production notes and the theatrical trailer. Although the film is about magic, there is nothing very magical about this disc.

Stan Dragoti's switching gender-roles comedy Mr. Mom comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that fails to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Mono. Spanish and French subtitles are accessible, and the soundtrack is closed-captioned. Supplemental materials include a collectible booklet. This is an inexpensive release from MGM/UA that would have been improved by the inclusion of a widescreen transfer.

IS IT WORTH PAYING SOMEONE TO CALABRATE OR TWEEK THE SETTINGS ON MY SAMSUNG 52A650 LCD

Yes!! It is very much worth it. They make your tv look the very best that it can in your setting. I would recommend anyone doing this with a tv 42" or larger.
