Extremely Happy with the Impressive V10
on December 11, 2015

Overall I am very pleased with the V10. I got the G3 when it came out and just loved the back buttons. I went to the G3 from a Galaxy S3 and was sick of bumping the power/volume buttons on the side and the G3 certainly fixed that. There were some great deals on the Note 5 which I strongly considered, but those back buttons really ended up making it an easy decision to go with the V10. Obviously those are a killer feature for me and my favorite part of the LG phones.
As for the rest of the phone, I am quite happy. Yes, it's a good sized phone but another feature that sold me on this is the shock resistance certification and because of that, I'm using it without a case which keeps it nicely sized. The rubber-like backing gives great grip and looks good, along with the stainless sides. The bezel is very thin and the phone really does look high end and in my opinion, nicer looking than the Samsungs and iPhones. Of course as you know, this has the replaceable battery and can hold a massive micro SD card so storage will never ever be a concern.
The G3 I always felt was a bit laggy and that they didn't have the power behind the first QHD screen. The V10 on the other hand has great performance. No, it's not quite like a Nexus running pure Android, but this thing is not far off and I believe qualifies for the "buttery smooth" performance rating. I think the 4 GB of RAM really helps in this regards as even having tons of apps open, I'm yet to experience so much as a hiccup with anything, which is really quite impressive. The Snapdragon 808 may not have the benchmark numbers of other processors and I'm not sure how it performs for gaming, but I can tell you this processor works great for everything else on this phone. The camera, gallery, Chrome, YouTube videos...you name it the app launches instantly. Also, even with heavy video watching the phone barely even gets warm. My G3 and previous Galaxy phones would quite warm, but this thing stays nice and cool. I think LG going with the 808 was a good choice, with the sole exception of perhaps intensive games that I cannot attest to.
The camera is of course fantastic with fast and accurate focus, great natural color, excellent detail and solid quality in low-lighting. With manual mode, this thing can take fantastic shots in pretty much any conditions and the small features such as slow-motion and panorama work flawlessly. The front cameras are also great and having 2 really makes a difference. I'm not one to take selfies, but if my wife wants a picture it so nice to be able to switch to the wide angle front lens and not have to stretch to try and fit us both in. It is wide enough you can capture yourself and a great background as well. Overall, I'd say this is without a doubt the phone with the best all-around cameras. Plus you can store up to a 2 TB, yes 2 TB, micro SD card so you can actually utilize the UHD video, which also is excellent. The screen on this thing awesome. No it's not the AMOLED like Samsung but the QHD Quantum Dot is no slouch. The contrast is great and the colors are very natural whereas the AMOLED can be a bit over-saturated. It has a good, not great viewing angle and can get very bright to see fairly easy outdoors. Honestly, I would take the V10 screen over a Retina and the Samsung version of the AMOLED, but it's close. Some debate the benefit of QHD on a screen this size, but man I love it. It really helps and you can view as close to the screen as you want without issue. 4K and QHD YouTube videos look awesome - check some out on this when demoing it and you'll see just how great this screen can look.
Software wise it's typical LG with a good take on pure Android that is super easy to use, clean and in my opinion much preferable to Samsung's TouchWiz. Given this is a big phone, there is also a neat feature that lets you simply swipe the home buttons and it shrinks the screen for one handed use. I never thought I'd actually use this but I find myself using it quite frequently and it works flawlessly. The only app they force you to keep installed is the quick memo app which is a bit annoying, but you may it useful and it's easy to ignore. I'm a bit torn on the 2nd screen at the top, but it certainly isn't a bad thing. It's nice having always-on notifications so if just want to check the time or see if I have notifications, I don't even need to touch the phone. You can also swipe over and turn on the camera or flashlight directly without turning on the screen, features I use frequently. When the screen is on, the notifications show up at the top which is nice not having your entire screen overtaken. Of course you can also put app shortcuts, recent apps, contacts and the music player on this bar. My one problem I hope they fix with a future software fix is I wish you could use the music player on the 2nd screen when the screen is off, but currently it's only allowed when the screen is on. That's my one nitpick. Overall, sure the 2nd screen isn't necessary, but it's far from gimmicky and is actually useful..
Really the only thing that isn't great is the battery life, but it isn't bad by any means. I just wish that with this size phone they would've squeezed a little bigger battery in, similar to the Nexus 6p or Droid Turbo 2. I would say I use my phone light to moderate and by the end of the day I'll be around 50% or under, but I think a heavy user would struggle to make it through an entire day. Marshmallow should be coming soon which should offer significant battery savings when the screen is off, which surprisingly this drains faster than expected. Of course the nice thing is you can swap the battery very easily and this phone also supports fast charging which really does speed up charging. I only use the fast charger if I need juice fast, otherwise I'll use my old G3 charger as there are some unconfirmed reports that fast charging kills batteries faster. Although given the battery is replaceable, it's really not a concern. I just choose to use the slower charger, at night for example when I'm not in a rush.
And finally, a review wouldn't be complete without mentioning the Hi-Fi DAC sound. When using decent headphones, wow does this make a difference! It makes music and videos sound better, but surprisingly it makes phone calls sound much clearer and defined. Absolutely a great feature and if audio is important to you, this is a huge perk.
So obviously I am very happy with this phone. Certainly try it out to make sure the size isn't too big, but if you're looking for a new larger phone, give the V10 a fair shot and I think you'll be very happy. Unless you need the stylus or are in the Apple ecosystem, I would take this over the Note 5/Edge 6+ and iPhone 6s Plus any day. More than likely when you buy it, you'll also get a free spare battery and micro SD card, another nice little perk. Very, very happy with this phone!

Affordable Class 10 SD Card
on December 15, 2010

This is one of the first Class 10 SD cards that is actually affordable and doesn't cost much more than Class 6 cards. At regular price it can be a bit expensive, but catch a sale and it's a great deal.
Performance wise the card is great. I have tried it on 3 separate devices, all of which take HD video. The first was a Panasonic Lumix point and shoot camera. Set to take 720p 30fps video, the recording start and stop times were noticeably faster than my previous Class 6 card. When I performed a Delete all content, this card cleared a bit quicker than before. I also used the card in a Canon T1i and there was no lag for shooting both 720p and full HD video. With a previous Class 6 card it worked well, but occasionally there would be a hiccup in recording, especially full HD. The last was a HD pocket camcorder and again, no issues as recording was smooth and starting and stopping was instant.
Download performance is also improved with this card. I would say data downloaded to my computer at the very least 25% faster than with a Class 6 card, which may not seem drastic, but when moving several GBs of data it makes a difference. I also uploaded data from my computer to the card and the same difference was evident.
Overall it is a great memory card. Is it worth updating from a Class 6 to Class 10? If you are using a point and shoot camera and do not take HD video, then probably not. If you are using a quality DSLR camera and/or shoot HD video frequently, the upgrade to Class 10 would be worth it. If you are getting a new camera and will be shooting HD, go for the Class 10. If you will not be shooting HD, a Class 6 will be ok but if you can get the Class 10 for close to the same price, go for the 10.
What's great about it: Performance, Quality, Capacity
What's not so great: Newer so still a bit expensive

Best WWII Movie - Amazing on Blu-Ray
on December 8, 2010

This is absolutely one of the best Blu-Ray titles available and you get 6 discs, all contained in a great tin case. The video is amazing and will really show you what your TV can do, especially the black levels. It may not be that amazing, color-popping nature show but it is supposed to replicate wartime footage with a grainy and 'faded color' appearance, and that it does extremely well. If you watch this with at least a 5.1 sound system, prepare to be in for a treat. Band of Brothers utilizes surround sound technology better than any other movie/show I've ever seen. With the DTS Master HD audio you will hear bullets whizzing by and mortars detonating all around you. If you currently own the DVD set and have a Blu-Ray player, this is one that is without a doubt worth the upgrade from DVD to Blu!
I'm not going to go into how great the storyline is because more than likely if you are purchasing this, you've seen it before. If you have not seen it, just know it never gets old and has great rewatchability. It is a powerful and touching true story about a close knit group of soldiers and their involvement in the war, from training to D-Day right up until taking the Eagle's Nest.
For the price, you get almost 10 hours of WW II - you really can't go wrong. This is my favorite movie/series of all time and I highly recommend it to anyone.
What's great about it: Excellent WW II Story, Great Blu-Ray PQ, Great Audio

Best Hair Product Available
on December 8, 2010

from Madison, WI
I personally don't use it but I got enough information from my wife to write a review. She says it's the best hair product she's ever used, and this is coming from someone who has used a lot of them:
The CHI warms up very fast so it's always ready to use. A salon quality product that does not damage your hair like others on the market today.
The best part about it is you can just as easily straighten curly hair as you can curl straight hair. It also works great for adding subtle curl to bangs.
What's great about it: Heats up Fast, Curls and Straightens, Simple on/off

Good Value for 2 Good Movies
on December 8, 2010

Enemy at the Gates is one of my favorite movies of all time. If you enjoy WW II and/or sniper movies, I believe you too will enjoy it. The Blu-ray version may not be a reference quality, but it is still quite good. You can see very good detail of the buildings and streets of Stalingrad. The movie itself is great, but watching it as a good quality Blu-ray makes it that much better.
Defiance I have only see twice but it is also a good movie, and one that benefits greatly from being on Blu. In several shots, the detail in the forests is fantastic, along with great facial detail. I don't like the movie as well as Enemy at the Gates, but if you are into the genre it is a must see. Good action and a powerful look at some of the Jewish people who took a stand against the bad Germans (apparently the real word is inappropriate language...)
Getting both of these on Blu for around $20 is a good deal. For anyone who is curious, they come in their own cases just as though you had bought them separately, but there is a cardboard cover that holds both cases together.
Rating the individual movies, I would give Defiance 4/5 stars and Enemy at the Gates 5/5 stars.
What's great about it: Good Movies, Good Blu-Ray PQ,

Solid Mouse for a Good Price
on December 8, 2010

There is nothing spectacular about this mouse, but if you are looking for a solid mouse under $10 this is a good choice. I had to replace my parent's mouse which had buttons that were very difficult to press and a scroll wheel that was a challenge to roll. This Kensington is much better.
First off, it is lightweight so if you prefer a mouse with some bulk this may not be for you. For people who simply want a mouse that works to browse the internet and look at pictures, this mouse is perfect. It does fit the hand very nicely and the buttons are very easy to click, but firm enough so you won't accidentally click them. The scroll wheel scrolls with ease and is textured for a good grip you can feel. No, I wouldn't want to use this for gaming or intense work, but for general computer use it is just right and at the right price.
I installed this on 2 separate machines, a laptop with Windows 7 and a desktop with Vista. For both, the drivers were located and the entire installation process was complete in under 20 seconds. The mouse also has a nice long usb cord for an extended reach.
Overall, this Kensington mouse has no issues and is a product I can highly recommend, especially given the low price. It also comes in a simple box, so no plastic packaging to deal with!
What's great about it: Inexpensive, Fits Hand, Installs Easily, No Plastic Packaging
I would recommend this to a friend!

Almost everything I was looking for
By Hitch
Overall it is a really great laptop but giving me too many issues.
Pros:
-Great screen
-Great speakers
-Great multitasking
-Great keyboard spacing
Cons:
-Have to adjust to smaller icons on some applications due to 4K but that's isn't a deal breaker.
-THE LAPTOP FREEZES UNEXPECTEDLY. My pointer will lag and jump around and text will not appear when pointer is freezing/lagging/jumping.
It's a great product in theory but it cost way too much to freeze when running basic applications, which is a basic feature any laptop should be able to keep up with.
I am on my second HP Spectre x360 and will probably be returning this one as well.
Has anyone else experienced these issues?

Yes, I've had that same issue with the random freezing. Sometimes it will happen several times a day, but may also go days without happening. So annoying, more so than a crashing app.
I'm on my second one two and I'm going to keep it in hopes some fix will come out for this. I contacted HP support but they said the usual, update, fresh install blah blah things I had already tried. I've checked the event logs and monitored the task manager when this happens and nothing indicates the freezing.
