Fantastic laptop for the money

My wife decided it was time for me to replace my old laptop - it was, after all, four years old and on its last legs. I'm a gamer at heart, but I'm also a writer, software developer and general computer enthusiast. The old laptop, a Lenovo Ideapad P500, was decent for its time, but I needed something with a little more punch. The features I was looking for in a new computer were:
* At least an i5, preferrably an i7
* at least 8gb RAM, preferrably 16gb
* SSD drive, preferred data drive of 1TB or higher.
* Touch screen, although this wasn't required.
* Dedicated video card, to feed my gamer side.
* 15" screen. 17" screens are just too big for laptops, but that's just me.
That said, I came across this beauty and was immediately impressed. Not only did it meet and, indeed, surpass all my requirements, but it did so at a price that didn't break the bank.
I got it home, spent the usual couple of days getting it just how I wanted it. Steam installed, games downloaded, productivity software installed, music downloaded, Dropbox ready to go and BackBlaze merrily backing up in the background. (If you don't use Backblaze, I highly recommend it - best online backup around!)
I started giving it the official usage tests - and was not disappointed! I'm not a hardcore gamer (anymore), but I do play more modern games. Although there are some games I wasn't able to run at max graphics, for the most part I was able to play the games I enjoy at least at medium to high graphics settings with at least 60fps.
I then tried doing what is I do professionally - software development. We coders spend a lot of time typing. The keyboard was responsive, but perhaps a big spongy. the fact that it is backlit is a nice feature. It's full size, albeit a tad tight. One of the features I particularly enjoyed was the the special functions on the function keys have to be activated. As a developer this is important - I'm hitting the functions keys constantly to perform tasks. Having to hold down another key to make it happen would have been an inconvenience I wouldn't be prepared to deal with. Compiling code was very quick, thanks to the SSD and the i7 processor.
I then tried the 2-in-1 feature, where you can make the computer a tablet. This was my first computer I'd had that allowed this, and was eager to see how it worked out. Turns out, it's one of those features where you wonder how you lived without it once you experience it. I'm able to set my laptop up to watch video in bed easily. I'm able to present stuff to people without needing the keyboard. Windows 10 is particularly suited to touchscreen environments, so everything I needed to do I could do without a physical keyboard. Nice!
I then unplugged my laptop to see how long the battery would last. I got about 5 and a half hours - not bad, considering the power involved. , and plenty for my typical usage.
The screen was wonderful. The 4k resolution is very nice; however, I've noticed that many of the applications and games I run aren't expecting that high resolution. The graphics are fine, but dialog boxes and other windows that pop up are too small to read. That's not the fault of the laptop, just poor program design.
All in all, this is a wonderful system. No issues, lots of power, lots of features.
My Best Buy number: 2218780361

This collection includes all 8 films from the Harry Potter saga. Based on the novels of J.K. Rowling, the films follow Harry (Daniel Radcliff) as he learns about his magical heritage, and the pivotal role he plays within the wizard community. Along the way, he forms indelible bonds with classmates Ron Weasely (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), who help him as he tries to defeat the evil wizard Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes).

I don't need to go into detail about the movies themselves. Everyone knows Harry! I will instead talk about the packaging, quality, etc. With all the movies included and in Blu Ray, all that can be said is WOW. If you like the movies and you don't have them yet in Blu-Ray, this is the best way to get them.
What's great about it: Small Package, great quality
What's not so great: Good do with more extra features.

Asus struck out with this one..
By megghegg
This computer gets an F--. I could spend another hour retyping al the problems I've had with this computer, particularly the extremely poor touchpad control, major problems with touchpad screen scrolling, the lack of screen brightness and pronounced dim screen (compared to quality displays), and even a bug in one of the Asus software utilities (NO excuse for this one), but I'm not going to do that, since this touchpad caused everything that I already typed to be deleted. But trust me, in spite of all the wonderful specs (including huge hard drive, huge SSD, i7 processor, high resolution display), this computers is far, far, far from being ready for primetime. If you value your sanity... You will be sorry if you do.
I know that the other major brands, such as Dell, HP, and Toshiba have been getting reviews of non-existent customer service that basically refuse to honor their warranties, and that Toshiba has even exited the consumer PC business, but there has got to be a better brand out there, somewhere.

1 star simply based upon the touchpad??
March 10, 2017
Seems pretty harsh to me. I've had the computer for a couple of weeks now. It has issues, just like any computer ever made does, but nothing that would grant it a one-star rating. The touch pad isn't the best, granted. But one star? Really?

Is this laptop good for video editing?

Succinctly put, yes.

The 4k UHD screen is beautiful. 10-point touch screen, and it's easily powerful enough to handle video editing. As well, it has all the ports you need to connect to whatever hardware you can throw at it.
