Storm the Vatican!!!

Exhorder's debut album and the follow up to said debut had been out of print for a long time, but thankfully, Roadrunner decided to re-release them both at the same time. These two CDs together make up what is essentially one of the most aggressive, violent, all out thrash fests ever recorded. First off, "Slaughter in the Vatican" is a classic in every sense of the word. The production is perfect. It's raw and no single instrument is higher than the other is and it makes everything sound clear and crushing. The guitar parts of Vinnie LaBella and Jay Ceravolo are roaring. Kyle Thomas's demented vocals and Chris Nail's drumming are sublime. This album is more than the sum of its parts though as this is one of the greatest thrash metal albums ever recorded and they don’t come more intense or violent. "Death in Vain" starts the album and it's hard to find a better opener than this, truly great. Then you have "Homicide" which has a mind blowing solo that just shreds and is another healthy dose of thrash. “Desecrator" follows and simply has to be heard to be believed. This song just screams with psychotic anger and if you aren’t headbanging here, it’s because you’ve already broken your neck from the last two songs. "Exhorder" is another soul crushingly fast track with an amazing chorus where Kyle Thomas screams "EXHOOOOOOOORDER!!!" repeatedly. "The Tragic Period" has a heavier feel to it with the slower double bass drumming. "Legions of Death" is another thrash classic that slays completely and utterly. The next track is the fastest song on the album and can be summed up in one word...insane! The title track is the closer and is a crushing mid-tempo thrasher ending with some acoustic guitar and a baby crying. it's a perfect ending to a perfect album. Two years later, these Louisiana thrashers came back with "The Law". While this album is still really good, its nothing compared to their debut. These guys were still very, very angry when this came out though as the violence level stays high. Whereas "Slaughter in the Vatican" spewed its hate filled lyrics in all directions, towards everything from religion to people in general, “The Law” deals pretty much with just religion. This album isn’t the all out thrash fest that "Slaughter in the Vatican" was, but it still has its moments. There is far more of a groove metal feel to this album, but it stays very heavy and has a restless feel to it. Kyle Thomas sounds great here also and sings with a lot of speed and a little more melody. The drumming is still intense with even more of a jazzy influence this time. The guitars tone here is even more brutal than before and is truly vicious, sounding quite like a chainsaw grinding through steel. Some highlights deserve mentioning. "Unforgiven" is a cool, fast song with some raw drumming. A start and stop thing, and a pretty thrashy riff. "I Am the Cross" alternates between fast and mid-paced riffing with some good drum and bass backing. "Un-born Again" has a funky bass line that augments Nail's jazz thrash drumming well. "Into the Void" is a Black Sabbath cover that is done brilliantly. They actually made this song heavier and more intense than the original. "The Truth" rules with its fast riffing and dirty drumming that helps to create a thrash metal mood even though much of the album isn’t really thrash. "Incontinence" is an instrumental that starts out pretty slow but eventually picks up and thrashes outright. That song and "(Cadence Of) The Dirge" are cool songs with a dark and depressive mood. The latter being slower paced but still a nice song. So there ya go two amazing albums. You'll probably find one to be better than the other depending on your tastes, but the fact of the matter is that Exhorder thrashes hard. You won’t find many bands better and even fewer with such great albums. With this being two albums for the price of one, you wont regret this purchase by any means.
What's great about it: viciuos guitar tones, almost endless onslaught of insane riffs, angriest vocals ever, and everything else
What's not so great: The Law ain't as good as Slaughter in the Vatican

Destruction's Most Overlooked
on October 23, 2008

This seems to be Destruction's most overlooked album. After some very influential albums in the mid 80's, this one must have just gotten lost in the shuffle, so to speak. This was also the last album with Marcel "Schmier" Schirmer on vocals before the millennium reunion. This is a very good album and can absolutely compete with their earlier accolades. Okay, after the intro "Beyond Eternity", you have the first highlight in the title track. This is a completely balanced song. The galloping, mosh inducing tempo and riffs mix perfectly with the catchy and more melodic refrain. Schmier is absolutely amazing here and throughout and is instantly recognizable. "Dissatisfied Existence" has some very technical riffs and tempo changes and continues the onslaught the last song started; a great, very melodic lead too. "Sign of Fear" is more mid-paced, with more odd, schizophrenic timings and some great oriental sounding acoustic solos that follow the melodic patterns. A very catchy song and Schmier's falsetto shrieks at the end just own. "Unconscious Ruins" is another great song, plenty of speed and heavy galloping riffs. The riffs they go through are just amazing with some awesome stops and breaks. It has a great break in it then a solo that is really technical without resorting to wankery. "Incriminated" is a mid-paced type song but the bass drum is restless and the way that it just stops and starts is really cool. The solos are great too and the backing parts are genius, also some nice lyrics. "Our Oppression" starts out kinda strange but the riffs that follow are some of the best on the whole album. The riffs after the first break are some of the greatest thrash riffs ever and there are so many tempo changes, this song has to be heard. "Survive to Die" is the closer and is probably the catchiest thing on here. It has such a great chorus and the riff between "Survive!" and "To DIE!” is sick. The ending is so funny too, you won't believe it when you here it. This is definitely a highlight of Destruction's career and I really don't know why it's so overlooked. Every thrash metal fan owes it to themselves to check this album out because it really doesn't get the praise it so deserves.
What's great about it: amazing riffs, great structures, melodic in a smart way, and Schmier's amazing vocals

Death Angel's Finest
on October 21, 2008

Opinions of this album tend to be quite erratic. Some love it and some just don't get it. What Death Angel did was improve upon everything they had done before and introduce a few new things. This is more of a thinking man's thrash with really interesting riffs and ideas. "Seemingly Endless Time" starts with the sound of crashing waves, which is pretty cool, then the riffs hit you like a brick to the face! A great thrasher except with a little more melody than most thrash songs. Next is "Stop", a straight up thrash song that’s a lot of fun. Then you have the first bit of experimentation, "Veil of Deception" is an acoustic ballad with some beautiful guitar melodies and multi-vocal parts. It isn't much of a thrash song but it remains an excellent song. "The Organization" should have you headbanging in seconds! A true classic with an infectious chorus that you really can’t help but sing along to. "Discontinued" opens with a cool drum intro and mixes thrash, hardcore punk, and funk that surprisingly works very well. "A Room With a View" is another ballad and it is a beautiful song, a tad bit cheesy perhaps but the guitar solos more than make up for it. "Stagnant" has a very unique structure with more funk and even some reggae influences and is another highlight of the album. "Ex-TC" is a cool, thrashy song with some cool riffs that change around quite a bit. "Disturbing the Peace" starts with the bass then the guitar riffing. Then it goes into another great riff, and another, and another...you get the idea. Finally, you have "Falling Asleep". It opens with a music box then a weird harmonized lead that’s really cool. This song just thrashes about with great riffs, tempo changes, and great soloing. From the start of “Seemingly Endless Time” at the beginning until “Falling Asleep” fades out, "Act III" is just brilliant. Everyone can find something to their liking here, and for the price, you definitely can’t go wrong. If you like thrash or Death Angel you really have to have this album.
What's great about it: excellent songwriting, about 100 or so memorable riffs, some amazing leads, and vocals
What's not so great: may be a bit too experimental for some

Ripping Corpse ATTACK!!!

Kreator's breakthrough album. Released in 1986, this joins the many other thrash classics from that same year. Kreator would go on to make albums with better songwriting and composition, but "Pleasure to Kill" still remains one of the best thrash metal albums ever made. It's pretty different from their later albums. It's faster, rawer, and much more extreme. The lyrical themes are all about death, gore, and violence, pretty typical stuff for an extreme band. Okay, some highlights from the album. It starts off with a beautiful instrumental. That really lulls you into a false sense of security because once it's over you're immediately hit with "Ripping Corpse". A song that bashes you with brutal thrash riffs and a chorus that simply has to be heard. A true thrash anthem. The title track is equally amazing. A quick drum intro, evil sounding verse riff, Mille's insane vocals, awesome lyrics (rampaging vampire...come on). Solo, and then...THRASH!!! Sick riff, probably the best on the whole album, you have no choice but to headbang here. Then you have "Riot of Violence". A song sung by the drummer, Ventor, thrash metal at it's best. It slays with the odd little melodic break and the extremely catchy chorus will be stuck in your head for days. "The Pestilence" is another favorite, and is another great thrasher that's a lot of fun. "Under the Guillotine" is a riff-fest that hits you in a way that isn't far from being hit by a train. A ferocious, pummeling, merciless onslaught of a song. The solos are equally blazing. The bonus tracks "Flag of Hate", "Take Their Lives", and the excellent "Awakening of the Gods" are all Kreator classics ("Flag of Hate" is one of my favorite songs ever), and to sum it all up. If you like thrash metal in any way, buy this album. You won't be disappointed.
What's great about it: a true thrash classic and one of kreator's best
What's not so great: the lyrics could be better but, they're still really good
