2015 Game of the Year
on July 22, 2016
Posted by: phoenixlau
This was my first foray into the Souls franchise. The setting was very appealing to me, Victorian gothic mixed with Lovecraft-esque cosmic horror.
The combat is much faster paced and action oriented than the Dark Souls games. The "trick weapons" which you can transform between different modes add a lot of fun variety, and many of the game's mechanics encourage you to be aggressive, like the regain system where you have a window to recover lost health if you damage enemies, or the extremely powerful roll/dodge spam which allows you to safely get close to attack.
Souls games have a reputation for punishing difficulty, but this is not true for Bloodborne in my experience. Yes, fights can sometimes be very tough, but they are always fair. Death feels like your fault, your failure in execution. Plentiful unlockable shortcuts in the environment combined with spamming the roll button allow you to run to the boss quickly with relative ease and minimal enemy contact. Finally, the loss of XP or health vials when dying is annoying but only a minor hindrance, since you can readily regain anything you lost from one of many farming spots.
In conclusion, definitely give this game a shot, even if you think it might be "too hard" for you. I'm definitely not an expert in these kinds of games, but I still managed to get the platinum trophy with not that much difficulty.

It's a Call of Duty game
on June 10, 2016
Posted by: phoenixlau
After so many iterations, what we've come to expect from the Call of Duty series is a good single player campaign, lots of online multiplayer, and perhaps some bonus content in the form of zombies mode.
Call of Duty Ghosts is, therefore, exactly what one would expect being a Call of Duty game. The campaign's story was somewhat muddled and confusing, but served as an excuse to deliver lots of cool set pieces, like a mission where you're rappelling down a skyscraper during a fireworks display, or one where you're dodging depth charges while scubadiving underwater. Overall the campaign was fun and played well.
I can't speak to the online multiplayer since that requires PS+, but as for the zombies mode, COD Ghosts has its own spin on things in the form of Extinction mode, where you are trying to destroy alien hives in a series of locations. You can play this mode 2 player local splitscreen, or up to 4 players online.

Kung Fu Panda clone of Smash Bros.
on May 17, 2016
Posted by: phoenixlau
This is basically a clone of Smash Bros., using Kung Fu Panda characters and stages. If you are a huge fan of Kung Fu Panda, you might enjoy this take on the 4 player 2D platform-based fighting genre.
Otherwise, I would just recommend you go with the real thing and buy Smash Bros., as the combat mechanics in that game are more polished and more fun.

GOW3 in 1080p/60fps
on May 17, 2016
Posted by: phoenixlau
This is a solid 1080p/60fps remaster of the PS3 game God of War 3, which originally ran at 720p/30fps. The game itself is 3rd person action, where you control Kratos as he switches between a bunch of different melee weapons to hack and slash his way to vengeance against the Greek gods.
Plotwise, God of War 2 ended in a huge cliffhanger which GOW3 immediately picks up in the middle of battle, so if you haven't played any of the previous games you might initially be somewhat lost. However, beyond the intro fight sequence all you really need to know about the story is that Kratos is very angry and kills stuff. I played GOW3 first before ever playing any of the other games in the series, and it was fine. Story is not this game's strong suit, it is the combo-based combat which feels great.
If you enjoy other stylish action games like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta, God of War 3 will be right up your alley.

Not even worth your time

I thought for $6 I would take a flier on this game for some trophies, how bad could it be? Pretty bad, it turns out. This is one of the worst looking and playing games I have ever experienced on consoles. It is so mindnumbingly boring I couldn't take it after a few hours and ended up trading it in at a loss of around $0.50. It's not even the cents that bothered me, it was the time from my lifespan that I couldn't get back. In short, avoid this game at all costs!

All it takes is the swipe of a finger. We connect with friends. We buy the latest gadgets and gear. We find out what's happening in the world. But with that same simple swipe, we cast an increasingly expansive shadow. With each connection, we leave a digital trail that tracks our every move and milestone, our every like and dislike. And it's not just people. Today, all major cities are networked. Urban infrastructures are monitored and controlled by complex operating systems. In Watch Dogs, this system is called the Central Operating System (CTOS) — and it controls almost every piece of the city's technology and holds key information on all of the city's residents. You play as Aiden Pearce, a brilliant hacker, whose criminal past led to a violent family tragedy. Now on the hunt for those who hurt your family, you'll be able to monitor and hack all who surround you by manipulating everything connected to the city's network. Access omnipresent security cameras, download personal information to locate a target, control traffic lights and public transportation to stop the enemy... and more.

Solid open world game
on January 6, 2016
Posted by: phoenixlau
Solid open world game that gives you lots of activities to do on the map of Chicago. I had lots of fun, and the platinum trophy is relatively straightforward to achieve for you trophy hunters out there (the only difficult trophy is the drinking game challenge, which requires exceptional hand-eye coordination).
There is the main campaign, which is very lackluster in its storytelling. Then there are lots of side missions involving hacking into home security systems, vehicle races, taking down gang hideouts and criminal convoys, finding QR codes hidden on the sides of buildings, etc. There are even augmented reality mini-games and other stuff like poker and chess to offer more variety.
With the game offering a constant progression of unlockable rewards and upgrades for everything you do in the world, I found I got the most enjoyment and spent most of my playtime doing side stuff rather than the weak campaign. For only $10, you can't go wrong with Watch Dogs.

Zelda + God of War + Portal
on May 5, 2015
Posted by: phoenixlau
Excellent game that is a mashup of Zelda, God of War, and Portal. You play as War, one of the 4 Horsemen, who was framed for... something about demons and angels. The story doesn't make a whole lot of sense, although War as a character is hilariously arrogant and basically insults everyone he comes across.
Gameplay is really fun, there is a large world that opens up as you get new abilities that allow you to reach new locations. The combat is your basic action game with lots of unlockable moves and weapon switching, like God of War.
One of the more interesting tools you get towards the latter part of the game is the Voidwalker, which is basically a ripoff of the gun from Portal where you can create two holes in space and walk through one hole to pop out through the other. A lot of elements in this game are like this, derivative of other AAA games, but to its credit Darksiders executes them all very well and it ends up being fun regardless.

Frustrating camera and repetitive gameplay
on May 5, 2015
Posted by: phoenixlau
Frustrating camera made especially annoying by the game's tendency to place you into confined hallways with enemies that jump around you, creating situations where it feels like the game is actively fighting against you trying to see the fight clearly.
Extremely repetitive gameplay, with the entire second half of the game consisting of you backtracking backwards through all the areas if the first half, and refighting the same bosses 3 times. The environments all have that bloom-heavy greyish bland early 7th gen look. Combat-wise, the second half gets better playing as Dante, since his moveset is much more diverse and fun to use than Nero's moveset.
