Awesome webcam that runs circles around built-ins
on April 7, 2024
Posted by: Robb0688
TL;DR: I love this webcam. It's much crisper, clearer, and the sound output is better than anything built into a laptop. I struggle to find any cons with its functionality. Price is the only sticking point I'd have with it, but it's pretty in line with other premium webcams. Would definitely recommend.
What I like:
+4k max resolution provides crystal clear picture that lends a professional look. I would not hesitate to use this in a job interview. I use this to stream on Twitch and YouTube and I love the way it looks.
+Auto focus and exposure work very well and very quickly. Moving around, forward or back, I'm constantly in focus with very balanced exposure.
+Built in dual mics do a good job of picking up your voice and little else in the background, though I will say these are no substitute for an actual mic.
+Show mode is neat. If you want to show somebody what's on your desk, you just flip the camera all the way forward so it's pointing down. The image will automatically adjust to look like your POV.
+Privacy shutter being a physical piece (vs clicking an "off" button) is appreciated. You simply twist the bezel a bit and it opens and closes.
What I don't like:
-I wish it had a depth of field slider or control so it was easier to blur out the background. Maybe you need a much longer lens to achieve that than what's here, but something would be nice instead of relying on the blur effect in Teams/Zoom/etc.
-I think it's pretty expensive for what it is, but as mentioned before, it's pretty much in line with some other premium webcams so it's not off base. I just don't think it's a homerun value proposition.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Great product. Super easy to use
on March 29, 2024
Posted by: Robb0688
This keypad does exactly as advertised in the most intuitive way possible. Simply unpack it, pull the tab out to activate the battery contacts, hold down the bluetooth pairing button until it blinks and search for it in your computer's bluetooth device menu. Once you locate and select it, it connects quickly after and you're up and running. It's compact, sleek, and the keys have a wonderful feel to them. The click isn't too loud unlike some other keyboards, but it never feels mushy either. I also appreciate the grippy silicone or rubber underneath that keeps it firmly in place. No complaints. Happy to have this as my keyboard only has a number row and that's absolutely miserable to type on when you're doing anything with more than a couple digits. At this price though, go for the convenience you've been missing out on and add this to any computer or desk setup and never look back. Happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments about it. Thanks for reading if you've made it this far :)

Great Capture Card
on February 27, 2024
Posted by: Robb0688
This is a great capture card and honestly I don't have much to complain about, but read on to see if it fits your needs.
The Elgato 4K X External Capture card is designed to capture gameplay with even the most bandwidth-intensive graphics settings. That means you can enable and capture gameplay with variable refresh rate (VRR), HDR10, and 4k resolution and I can say it does this well. In my testing, I captured everything from the easy Super Mario 64 to the much more demanding Jedi Survivor. All looked phenomenal and smooth. I tried Mario to see how it handled gameplay that was connected via an adapter and in low res and a different aspect ratio. Worked great. Next I did Jedi Survivor as that enabled me to test 4k60 with HDR and VRR and my video came out looking like it did on my 4k HDR TV. Very happy.
I don't mean to make this a super brief review, but this does what it's advertised to do and does it well. It's very much plug and play. The software to install on your PC is easy to use and straightforward with one exception. I was having trouble getting my first few recordings to show up where the software said they were saved. There's an option to change what does the video encoding and the options were my PC graphics card, which being a non-gaming PC is pretty weak, and the internal software one. Changing to Elgato's internal solution ended up working and now I have no issues.
So the only thing I would say you should ask yourself when questioning if this is the right card is what are you doing with it? Uploading captures to YouTube? Probably worth it as they support 4K and HDR. Streaming to Twitch? You could probably get by with a lesser card due to their stream compression.
To conclude...it's great. Get it if you need one and need the resolution and high frame rate and HDR recording. Just check the encoding setting if it doesn't seem to be working right.

Great Printer
on February 20, 2024
Posted by: Robb0688
I've tested this printer for a couple weeks and can say I am quite happy with it. While it has a few flaws/nitpicks, it overall works well and especially much better than my last HP printer.
-----
Here's what I like about it.
***
Fast--this printer spits out pages much faster than my prior one, which has been a time saver
+Clear--prints much clearer, which is nice because I print a lot of shipping labels at home and my last printer's output couldn't be scanned by UPS.
+Print from anywhere with your phone. Super convenient that you no longer have to be at your desk to print.
+Secure print. It won't print unless you can prove you're right next to the machine. Cool feature.
+Scan directly to your email. Set up a shortcut and with the touch of a button, scans go right to your inbox. You can even set up custom email bodies to go with the attachments.
+Small, but valuable to me: I have kids and paper sitting out the back always got crumpled as they'd mess with it, or grab sheets. Having a closed off tray is much nicer.
-----
What I don't like
***
-HP ink cartridges have chips on them so they can effectively shut off your printer remotely or keep you from using competitor ink.
-App and interface is glitchy. I get errors on my laptop saying it can't print, but it still prints. I get errors on my phone saying the printer is blocked and it doesn't print from there, while my old one would. At least I can use my computer, but still frustrating. Can't find a fix.
-Can't set a password. App says it needs attention. I go to update it with a password and a wheel spins endlessly.
-Most egregious thing though, and the main reason I took a star off: HP Instant ink is a horrible program. Remember how I said the cartridges have chips in them? Once you register a cartridge with instant ink, it cannot be used without the subscription. Meaning if you're like me and don't necessarily fly through ink and think "I don't need this anymore" or more than likely, sign up for the trial but cancel at the end, your ink won't work. That's why I didn't take HP up on their offer for 3 months of instant ink. I won't go through the ink included in the printer within the trial time and they would remotely lock me out of my ink since I'd cancel the plan. It's spelled out in the terms of service when you sign up. Very anti-consumer, in my opinion.

Ok, but flawed
on December 23, 2023
Posted by: Robb0688
The Turtle Beach Stealth Ultra controller is a third party version of the Xbox Elite controllers, aimed at the most competitive and discerning gamers. With a $200 price tag, a $140 premium over a standard controller, and cutting-edge features, it promises a premium experience, but one that I can't say I've experienced.
First, here's what I do like about the Stealth Ultra:
--Feels nice in hand. The controller has good weight and balance in hand. It's also bigger than a standard Xbox controller, which feels nice in larger hands such as my own.
--Hall Effect sticks. They use magnets so that there are little (or maybe no) friction points that can wear out, which causes stick drift.
--The hard case it comes with is neat. Soft lining, zippered section to store thumbstick caps, and charging port are all well thought out features
--The amount of features, customizations (stick sensitivity, RGB lighting effects and colors, etc), are pretty neat
--Additional stick caps give you 3 options for how you want the thumbsticks to feel.
--Adjustable triggers are cool. There's a switch on the bottom that allows you to slide a physical stop behind the trigger so that they register a pull much quicker. Buttons (with the exception of LB and RB) feel great and responsive. I also think the additional programmable buttons are a neat addition though I haven't used them and I'll address below.
--RGB! Who doesn't love rainbow effects or their favorite color tracing a path on the controller?
What's less good. Much of this section could've been in the one above had it been executed well.
--Looks. I really think TB went too far with the mix of colors and materials on this and it made for a quite unpleasant appearance. Of course this is highly subjective
--Wireless dongle plugs into charging stand, which has to occupy a port on your console. This was frustrating as I am out of ports on my Xbox.
--Layout and design decisions. The button to the left of the screen is in an abysmal location. This has been so annoying. You have to arch your thumb awkwardly over the left stick to use this button. I play some Fortnite and that button brings up the map, so I do need it. very annoying. Additionally, LB and RB feel very mushy and hard to press fast, which is a shame because the others are quite responsive. Lastly, as other reviews have mentioned, the sticks grind against the outer ring and my left stick already feels gravelly when I rotate it now and I don't even have that many hours in. Lastly, the programmable buttons seem neat, but I hesitate to map anything to them because they're so incredibly sensitive. I am always pushing the ones on the inside of the grip. The other thing I don't like about them are the 2 that are more on the back of the controller are in a weird spot to press. They almost have to be pressed straight up towards your ceiling, which is an odd movement to do with how controllers are held. TB also touts 30 hr battery life. I have the RGB effects on, but the screen times out somewhat fast and I am losing battery pretty quick. I'm guessing I'd maybe get 10-12 hours out at this rate.
--Glitchy, unpolished experience. This is where the disappointment really comes in with this controller. Some of the features this controller touted, never worked. Like the phone notifications. Could never get it to work. I could get the screen to come up and I could get it to pair with my phone, but it always said 0 notifications. Additionally, getting it to pair is super confusing sometimes. You go to the screen to get the feature to connect and two options you get are "activate" and "pairing". I don't know what the difference is and oftentimes both did nothing. The apps you have to install on your Xbox or your phone are not great and the profiles system is confusing. You can't tell what's loaded onto your controller, what you're editing etc. Most egregiously of all though, this controller straight up disconnected mid game on me and I couldn't do anything with it. It disconnected and I got a message saying "you need a controller for this game, press A to continue". I couldn't press A, there's no battery pack to pull to hard shut it down, there's no off button and pressing the pair button on the dongle and going to pair it with the system on the onboard screen did nothing. I put it down and got my stock xbox controller out and haven't picked this thing up since.
Conclusion
I really wanted to like this controller. I thought it had cool features that sounded useful or at least interesting to me, but a lot of them come up short, don't work, or make no noticeable difference that would justify spending this much on a controller. I'm sure there are other controllers out there with hall effect sticks if drift is your main concern that perform better.

Perfect for its use case
on June 16, 2023
Posted by: Robb0688
This review isn't going to have a ton of substance because this drive does one thing, and does it well. The real pro behind this coming out is that it gives Seagate some competition so these drives will inevitably come down in price, which is needed given how cheap PS5's storage option is. That will no longer be a feather in the PS5 cap. Now Xbox is getting to closer in price AND a much easier solution to use. Anyways....
Here's the good:
-Acts as internal storage: play X|S enhanced games from this without having to use the internal storage.
-Plug and play: literally just plug it in and pick whether you expect it to move to other consoles or not. I'm not sure what it does, though I would suspect it takes a little more storage to format in the option to take it. I picked "keep in console" and didn't look back.
-Transfer rate: being a solid state drive (SSD), you can write data to it very quickly, which makes filling it a breeze. Even better is if you need to shuffle stuff around between the internal SSD and this. I was getting anywhere between 5.5 and 6.0 Gbps on that. Flight Sim and Forza Horizon, 145 and 125 Gb respectively, went to this drive in like 15 min. Nuts.
What's less good:
-There really isn't much to complain about. It was kind of hard to push into the back, but maybe the Seagate drive is too. It's fine because I have no plans to take it out either as I'm the only one I know personally with a Series console.
-Rendered my external HDD kind of obsolete as most games are X|S optimized and won't play as well from there.
Should you buy this?
-Do you have a lot of games you don't want to uninstall/reinstall?
-Do you play mostly X|S optimized games?
-Do you have GamePass?
If you answered "yes" to any or all of those, yes, get it if you have the cash to burn. Otherwise you can continue the SSD/HDD shuffle.
Side note: if you get this and don't have GamePass yet, or it's inactive, look up "Xbox Live Gold to GamePass Ultimate" and see if the conversion still works when you're reading this as there's a free month code included.

Great earbuds with few drawbacks
on April 16, 2023
Posted by: Robb0688
The Jabra Elite 4 wireless buds pack a lot of value into a $100 package and I am quite impressed. They're feature rich and are light on drawbacks.
----What's Great----
-Active noise canceling - it works quite well on droning things humming appliances or if you were to be on an airplane. That said, I think there's a misconception they cancel random sounds, which no ANC does. They also offer a hear-through mode which engages a monitor mic so you can hear your voice and other external sounds, which is nice. You can shut both options off as well.
-Advanced bluetooth: these allow you to pair with multiple devices and switch automatically, which is cool. You can listen to music on one thing and then take a phone call automatically. You can also use either earbud individually, which is better than my previous bud where there was one that was the "parent" bud so to speak. It was either L&R or just L. These are L or R.
-Jabra app: I jave earbuds that retailed for more than these that had virtually no EQ settings which was frustrating. The jabra app has plenty of sound presets and an EQ slider to dial the sound in just right for whatever you may be listening to.
-Sound quality (calls): calls sound great and I'm told my voice sounds good through them too.
-Size (case and buds): both are very sleek, out of the way and small. I love how portable the case is and how low-profile the buds are.
----What's ok----
-Battery life is fine. 5.5 in the buds and 22 hrs in the case is acceptable, but not as good as 100 hours that other brands might offer in the case.
-Sound quality (music): I will say they sound good. Better than good even. Maybe this is a product of the size and they're simply limited by physics, but the bass is kind of lacking, even with the EQ dialed up to boost bass. These will not rumble your head, but they do sound crisp and clear
--What's bad---
Honestly there's not much to list here. I guess the only thing I would say is there is nothing protecting the interior of the bud like a mesh screen or anything. The little silicone earpieces are also very shallow so if you get any earwax in them (yeah I know, gross), that wax is basically going to nearly be in the bud itself. Sometimes the comfort isn't top notch either, but nothing awful. Might just need different tips.
To conclude, these are really great for their price. Sure, they're not perfect, but you'd be remiss to expect perfection at $100. Great all around buds. Recommended by this reviewer.

Great charger at a great price
on September 22, 2022
Posted by: Robb0688
I love this charger. It's my first 45 watt charger and it's a game changer. I use it to charge my samsung s22 ultra and I can't believe how fast it is. My phone has a massive 5000 mAh battery, which is a lot to charge, but I can get it from 30% to fully charged in under an hour. it's the fastest charging i've ever seen. i like the long 6 foot length as well. always nice to be able to use your phone while it charges and why i prefer to get cables like this vs using wireless charging. the cable has a braided nylon outside and it's nice and flexible and easy to coil without snags and tears in the insulation like you run into with standard cables. the prongs on the unit collapse which helps with storage by having it keep a low profile and gives confidence when storing it with other devices. i also appreciate that this charger is much cheaper than ones from samsung and does the exact same thing. no cons i can think of at this time. this is a solid product and i am very happy with it. would definitely recommend.

Soild monitor with only a few downsides
on August 24, 2022
Posted by: Robb0688
TL;DR: a snappy, well-equipped monitor with only a few downsides
Appearance: this monitor is a very attractive one. I personally like that it looks modern and sleek without looking garish and over-done. There are a few flaws in the appearance. The bezels, especially at the bottom, are a bit on the large side. Additionally, the blue turbine-looking piece on the back doesn't light up. I like the feature and the color, but I wish there was a light in it. Lastly, the cable management is a silicone strap on the back. I wish there was a channel running down the back instead.
Performance: this monitor shines in performance. I hooked up my series x and my PC to it. The auto switch functionality works well and is really convenient. The responsiveness is like nothing I've experienced as this is my first monitor that's really designed around gaming. Most I've had are for general use with some gamer-friendly features. It made my series X feel snappier since it responds much quicker than my TV does. The high refresh rate makes things look buttery smooth and with no detectable input lag. The variable refresh rate (VRR) does work, though maybe not perfectly. Seems to work better on PC games than it does with the series X. It smoothed out some frame rate issues in Elden Ring, but wasn't perfect. The biggest cons I find with the performance of this monitor are resolution, contrast, and HDR performance. While 1080p is decent, especially at 27", it would seem like there's something left on the table as many displays have moved to 1440p and 4k. The contrast leaves a bit to be desired. I believe that's because it's an IPS panel vs VA or OLED, but it could be higher. The relatively lower contrast goes hand in hand with my other complaint. The HDR did not impress on this monitor. It has HDR10, but when you have somewhat low contrast and low peak brightness, the HDR suffers. The image is very crisp and colors seem well-balanced, but I wish it just had more of that HDR pop where bright highlights actually look bright.
Solid monitor, would recommend, but it's not perfect.

Solid Thermo a few bugs. Don't recommend DIY
on June 22, 2022
Posted by: Robb0688
Coming from an old programmable thermostat, there's a lot to like about this Ecobee, but also a couple unexpected drawbacks.
AT A GLANCE:
Pros:
-stylish
-screen takes up bigger portion of face than older models
-intuitive interface
-tons of great features
Cons:
-app can be frustrating
-app missing features after troubleshooting
-some parts of install not explained well enough
-plastic bezel looks cheap. wish I went for the premium with the zinc bezel
MORE DETAIL:
Pros: the thermostat comes coupled with an app that controls it and can also be controlled by google assistant/siri. The app is streamlined and well laid out. controls are where you would expect them to be and you can change almost all the settings remotely. you can break up each day of the week with temp schedules, which is really convenient. setting the programming is super easy. i like that i can copy one day to others since my schedule varies. I can have it get warmer on days i go to the office and have it slightly cooler when i'm WFH in the basement and cooler yet for days I will be home and mostly upstairs. You can easily set vacations as well and even geofences so that the thermostat changes the temp depending on you entering/leaving a certain geographical area. There are lots of other settings for eco+, which is ecobee's new enhanced functionality. One i think is neat is it will shut your a/c off if the feel of the air meets your temp (i.e., it's a bit warmer than the set temp, but low humidity).
Cons: the app can be frustrating. i often get "failed to save" errors when i make a change. i have to sometimes attempt my change 2 or 3 times before it takes and does what i'm asking. that'll probably get patched out, but it can be annoying. as i mentioned before, the eco+ settings are great, but after some troubleshooting with support, i noticed i no longer have the option on my app even though it's on my thermostat. odd, but it's not a deal breaker. and lastly, that gets me to the biggest issue i've had so far. the install. i have a thermostat with just 4 wires (no common wire), which you can still hook up with the included power extender kit (PEK), but it's not necessarily the most intuitive. Ecobee could do us all a favor and have a quick blurb about what each wire you have is for so you understand the concepts more. the included instructions are sufficient however, so i'm not docking them more for this. just know it can lead to failures and damage if you do it wrong. which leads me to my PSA:
PSA:
i recommend having a pro install it if you need the PEK. there's a lot of unintuitive wiring and if you do it wrong, you can damage your system. i unfortunately wired it wrong by just a little bit and it made my a/c turn on whenever i ran my fan. i tested this by turning the fan or a/c on and i think i did it too many times too fast and blew out the contactor in my a/c unit. fortunately that's relatively inexpensive. you wire it worse than me though and you can have catastrophic failures. up to you, but i'd probably just have a pro do it right and then it's guaranteed in case something goes wrong.

Achieve impressive sound from this JBL Link voice-activated speaker. Bluetooth technology ensures solid connectivity to your smartphone to play your favorite music, and the built-in Google Assistant provides hands-free operation on a variety of tasks. This JBL Link voice-activated speaker works with both iOS and Android devices for optimal convenience.

I am new to this tech. Would like to have the voice assistance .Being this has bluetooth and wi-fi capabilities any limitations to this speaker? Want good sound and the ability to expand system in future. Thanks

It sounds like from other reviewers that there is a delay between video and sound if you pair this with a video source, so you can't watch movies on it yet. Being that it's wifi capable and has a chromecast built in, you can cast your music to it meaning you get better sound and the notification sounds from your phone won't interrupt your music anymore. I haven't gotten to test the expansion, but JBL does claim this can be linked to other JBL Link speakers for a multi-room music system, ala Sonos. I hope this helps.
