IdioticBunny's Reviews

Sin City roars to DVD with this single-disc edition from the fine folks at Dimension Home Video and Troublemaker Studios. With an enhanced version coming down the road that includes each story presented by itself in its entirety (including deleted scenes), this disc has been made to preserve the original cut of the film as it was seen in the theaters. The release is short on extras, though there is an eight-minute making-of that features interviews with the majority of the cast, as well as the creator Frank Miller and filmmaker Robert Rodriguez. Picture quality is incredible, with an anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen presentation that radiates the contrasting picture, while the Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 tracks blare the score and effects just right to make it a satisfying listen. Those who are looking for a much richer home experience might want to wait for the next release, though there may be many that end up diving into each and any version as it comes along.

One of the best comic book adaptations
on May 3, 2008

First of all, if you're not a fan of violence, comic books, good acting, or interweaving storylines, please leave now and go watch The Princess Diaries. Because this movie is the polar opposite of The Princess Diaries. Lol. This movie has a lot of resemblance to Quentin Tarantino's directing style with the non-chronological order storylines that all seem to connect at some point. Quentin Tarantino also happens to make a guest direction.
First of all, this movie is about 3 different stories all taking place in Sin City around the same time. First is Marv, (played fantastically by Mickey Rourke) who is an ex-convict who seems to always have trouble with the law. He, being as ugly as he is, happens to meet a beautiful "goddess" on a strange night, but she ends up getting killed while sleeping right next to her. The cops are soon on the lookout for him, but he fights them off in the bloodiest and barbaric ways.
Second, Hartigan (played by Bruce Willis) is a nearly-retired veteran cop who is one of the good ones in Sin City. He helps save a little girl from a son-of-a-senator r@pist, but is then shot by his bad-cop partner (and lives). He is charged by the senator to a life sentence in prison if he doesn't confess to r@ping the poor girl he saved. He later comes out of prison to help track the girl he saved many years ago, to find poor little Nancy (played by Jessica Alba) working at a strip club. He then realizes he puts her in danger and is now on the run with her.
Third, Dwight (played amazingly by Clive Owen) has a connection with the Old-Town h00ker girls - who are basically their own breed of law in their county - and uses it to help take down a, who he thinks, is a killer and an abusive boyfriend, but turns out to be a cop.
This movie is brilliant in every aspect and for some it may be easy to confuse you with the interconnecting storylines that are out of order. I recommend it completely.

Best Coming-of-age Movie I've ever seen
on May 1, 2008

A River Runs Through It is one of the best coming-of-age/ family movies I've ever seen. Starring Craig Sheffer (which it's unfortunate he never got it big), Brad Pitt, and Tom Skerritt, this movie will touch you and move you in such a way you won't believe it. Based off the autobiographical book by Norman MacLean, it follows the story of Norman, played by Sheffer, and reflects on his life as a youth at his home in Montana, where he would connect with his very disconnected family through fly-fishing at the river. Brad Pitt gives one of his best performances as Norman's younger brother, Paul, who made it big as a reporter, but with great power comes great responsibility, as he begins to lead a life of underground gambling and excessive drinking and more illegal acts. Their father, played by Skerritt, is the presbyterian priest at their church and he is very stern, but very heartfelt at the same time.
The score for this movie from Mark Isham is one of the best I've heard, I love the title score and the score at the end of the film, because it fits the mood perfectly.
I recommend this movie to everyone, even if you're the type for huge action flicks, lots of violence, or a total sappy chick flick. If this movie doesn't open up your emotions and move you in anyway, then the blame is on me.
What's great about it: Everything
What's not so great: Starts slow, but finishes nicely.

Adam Sandler's best performance
on April 30, 2008

Reign Over Me is one of the best and saddest movies I have ever seen. But don't let the depressing factor let your opinion of the movie change. This was easily one of the best movies of the past year. The movie is about Charlie Fineman, played by Adam Sandler, who is having trouble recuperating after the death of his wife and kids in the 9/11 attack. He runs into his old college roomate, Alan Johnson (Don Cheadle), who seems to be living the perfect life, but feels isolated trying to balance out work and family. They soon become close friends again, as Alan helps himself to live a more fun life. But when Charlie's problems become too much to deal with, Alan is determined to help Charlie come out of his sorrow.
I don't see how this movie wasn't nominated for a single Oscar or Golden Globe, with a brilliant script, beautiful direction, and amazing acting. Adam Sandler gave the performance of a lifetime; he makes you laugh, cry, but mostly cry. Don Cheadle was also great, and deserved at least a Golden Globe.
I recommend this movie 100%, you won't regret it.

My All-Time Favorite CD
on April 29, 2008

Muse is my favorite band of all time. I have and love each and every one of their CDs. Absolution, in particular, is the best CD I've ever heard. If you like anything from Radiohead, People in Planes, or classical, you'll love Muse. The lead vocalist, guitarist, pianist, and songwriter - Matt Bellamy - is one of the best around. His vocals reach high and low, especially high (which resembles Thom Yorke of Radiohead) and plays guitar like Slash, if not, better. The drummer, Dominic Howard, is also a very good drummer.
As for the album, my favorites are...
Blackout: A very good, melancholy piece of work that, with even the smallest amount of lyrics, can still move you in such an amazing way.
Sing for Absolution: One of the singles that came out, along with a very stylish music video, the song makes you want to take a trip to space - which Muse so often does.
Stockholm Syndrome: Another single, and the first song I ever heard by Muse, it's one of the best hard rock songs I've ever heard. It's a song that resembles Deftones' style, but in a very Muse-like way. The guitar, piano, and drums are all so brilliant.
Time is Running Out/ Hysteria: Two of Muse's hottest songs and probably their most popular songs. The guitar and mood of each songs make you feel exactly what the titles say. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hysteria on Guitar Hero or something sometime soon.
I recommend this CD fully to anyone who likes rock, classical, or even a little techno.

One of the most beautiful movies ever made
on April 28, 2008

Children of Men may come off to some as such a weird title, but is far from strange. It is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen, even considering it's main plotline revolves around the apocalypse. The movie is about a cynical man named Theo Faron, played by Clive Owen, who has given up hope on humanity's survival. He lives in a world where women are infertile and can't have babies and the government carries a close resemblance to the N@zis and/ or the Combine in Half-Life 2. Just as he is about to give up completely on hope that a child will be born and that this is the end, his ex-wife pops up into his life to offer him a proposal: Escort a woman to a safe zone where she can ... have her baby.
One of the best movies I have ever seen with some of the best performances from Clive Owen and Michael Caine, who plays Theo's hippie-like buddy, and probably the best cinematography and visual effects I have seen in years, this movie isn't anything short of brilliance. Beautifully directed by Alfonso Cuaron, this movie makes you feel like you're really in the movie and takes you on a completely unexpectedly wild ride of depression, happiness, and horror. I recommend this to anyone and everyone.

A surreal and challenging romantic fantasy that only seems to improve on itself with repeat viewings, Michel Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind arrives on DVD with some fascinating and revealing extras courtesy of Universal. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, the image sports a mild grain with vibrant colors and little evidence of digital artifacting or edge enhancement. The closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1 audio mix is clean and even, and the disc also offers additional English and French Dolby Digital 5.1 mixes with optional French and Spanish subtitles. For those looking to unlock the many mysteries of the elliptical film, an audio commentary track with director Gondry and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman begins slowly but soon finds the creative pair following the film from first pitch to final frame. It's nice to hear Gondry discuss some of the impressive camera tricks he utilizes in the film, and it's obvious that he and Kaufman really connect creatively. A conversation with Jim Carrey and Gondry finds the pair working very harmoniously as well -- with the possible exception of one heated but ultimately benign exchange on set -- and it's great to hear the two discuss the believable backgrounds that they infused the characters with as well as their constant stride to create an original and creative feature. Even if the featurette entitled "A Look Inside Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is little more than an extended commercial, it does offer some fun and revealing interviews with the cast and crew and truly gets the viewer excited to take another look at the decidedly complex film. While a handful of deleted scenes doesn't necessarily reveal anything new about the film, the scenes do provide a few quiet and hauntingly affecting moments that didn't make it into the final cut; fans of the film will no doubt be excited to have the opportunity to check them out. A semi-creepy Polyphonic Spree music video features footage from the film altered to have characters and inanimate objects from the film singing their tune "Light and Day," and a brief infomercial for Lacuna Inc. rounds out the features in a quirky and upbeat note.

My All-Time Favorite Movie

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. A fitting title for a perfect movie. The movie stars Jim Carrey as Joel, a shy and quiet man whose girlfriend, Clementine (played marvelously by Kate Winslet), has recently erased him from her memory. Heartbroken by this news, he decides to have the same procedure done to him, but soon realizes, while it's already too late, that he truly loves this girl and doesn't want her erased from his memory. With the greatest script I've ever seen - filled with the most romantic and memorable lines - and a great ensemble cast - including Tom Wilkinson, Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, and Elijah Wood - makes for one of the best love stories ever in movie history. I recommend this movie completely for anyone who loves a good chick flick, or a memorable and moving cinematic experience.
