This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The plot is interesting, the movie interweaves drama with dark humor. It is sad, funny, horrifying. The movie is quite entertaining. Definitely not for children.
What's great about it: Great plot and filming
What's not so great: NA

This film comes once again to DVD in a collector's edition version done for the film's 20th anniversary. The collector's edition includes a new documentary ("Back to Somewhere in Time"), a commentary by the film's director, seven production photos, a featurette narrated by one of the founders of the Somewhere in Time Fan Club, English and French language options, English and Spanish subtitles, theatrical trailer, and dual-layer, nonanamorphic widescreen (1.85:1 aspect ratio) formatting. Picture colors are natural, but somewhat dark. The Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack is mono rather than stereo. The plastic case includes a small booklet of production notes and a chapter index.

The first two-disc set from Paramount, Forrest Gump is a sight to see, and sure to please anyone who understood the real meaning of the film. To begin, the picture quality is about as good as it gets. Framed at the original aspect ratio of 2.35:1, and anamorphic, the colors are right on (skin tones are especially on target) and the definition is outstanding. Darker areas stand out with the correct shading that goes to show what can be done with careful authoring. The sound, a 5.1 Dolby Digital English track, is also perfectly realized. Though there is only a slim amount of surround material, the track is very forward and forceful, taking advantage, just at the right time, of the deeper bass. Also available is a French surround track and subtitles in English. As for extras, there is no mistaking that this Academy Award-winning film gets the star treatment. The first of the two discs, along with the movie, has two audio commentary tracks. The first is from director Robert Zemeckis, producer Steve Starkey, and production designer Rick Carter. The second commentary is from another of the producers, Wendy Finerman. Neither is screen-specific, but both are, in different ways, filled with a wealth of valuable information. But it is the second disc that houses the majority of the supplemental materials. There you will find a half-hour documentary (originally released on VHS in 1994) called "Through the Eyes of Forrest Gump." There are enough interviews and behind-the-scenes shots to make this better than the standard fluff piece. Next are some shorter featurettes, "The Magic of Makeup," "Through the Ears of Forrest Gump" (made up of five short segments), and "Building the World Of Forrest Gump -- Production Design." Eleven visual effects discussions, including two scenes that were excised from the film, are the highlight of the extras. Visual effects producer Ken Ralston and his team talk in depth about the multitude of effects shots used in the film. Finally, this disc features a decent photo gallery, some wonderful (though short) screen tests, and a couple of trailers. This is a wonderful DVD set for a memorable movie, certainly worthy of any collection.

This movie is a real American classic. I could watch it over and over. Not for young children - older teens. One of Tom Hank's best.
What's great about it: Never Gets Old
What's not so great: Should have had a sequel

"The #1 Thriller of All Time" comes to DVD as part of Hollywood Pictures' Collector's Edition series. Fans of M. Night Shyamalan's ingenious supernatural story will revel in the 1.85:1 widescreen (enhanced for 16 x 9 televisions) format and 5.1 Surround Sound which fully capture the intricate details of the film and tangible paranormal presence. What makes this DVD especially enjoyable, however, is the multitude of behind-the-scenes features, many of which are narrated by Shyamalan and other key crew members. Included are a French-language track; a "Storyboard to Film Comparison" of the anniversary dinner scene; cast and crew interviews; a fascinating "Music and Sound Design" presentation that illustrates how the incredibly creepy background track was created; and "Reaching the Audience," an explanation of how word of mouth made this movie the cultural phenomenon it became. Also included are "Rules and Clues," a guide to the hints threaded throughout the movie before its explosive, surprise ending; four deleted scenes, one of which is an extended finale; and an interview with Shyamalan in which he talks about his background and how it affected his filmmaking. Theatrical and TV trailers as well as cast and crew biographies round things out. Finally, viewers should click on the beribboned box for a real treat -- Shyamalan's first horror film, "Nightmare on Old Gulf," which was written, produced, directed, and starred in by the film phenom when he was 11 years old.

Travel back in time to one of the most exciting and intriguing periods in human history with this release featuring all 12 episodes Rome: Season One. The first season of the lush, lavish and frequently lewd and lascivious British historical drama Rome covers the years 52 to 44BCE, beginning with the return of Julius Caesar (Ciaran Hinds) from the Gallic wars and ending with the fateful "Ides of March". Though returning to a hero's welcome, Caesar realizes that he's stepping into a snake pit of deceit and corruption. The Patrician ruling class, worried that Caesar will make himself emperor and abolish the Republic, intend to strip him of his power. His scheming niece Atia (Polly Walker) is already undercutting her uncle by forcing her daughter Octavia (Kerry Condon) to marry Caesar's most influential nemesis, the aging Pompey (Kenneth Cranham). Playing one side against the other to keep Caesar at bay, Pompey proves so effective that Caesar must ask his friend Marc Antony (James Purefoy) to help him vanquish his foes, even if it means all-out civil war. Meanwhile, a pair of humble soldier, the virtuous family man Vorenus (Kevin McKidd) and the hedonistic Pullo (Ray Stevenson), simply try to stay out of everyone's way and survive--but instead find themselves at Ground Zero of virtually every major historical turning point during the series' turbulent eight-year timespan. Pullo in particular spends much of his time squeaking out of one death-trap after another, somehow managing to enrich or aggrandize himself without even trying. His main contribution during Season One consists of taking Atia's callow son Octavian (Max Pirkis) under his wing, teaching the boy the ways of warfare and women. Eventually Octavian will emerge as the greatest threat against the pro-Caesar forces of Antony after Caesar's assassination--and thus the redoubtable Pullo has once more unwittingly altered the course of history. Not only was Rome an international success during its first season on the air, but the series also garnered an Emmy award for its American run on HBO.

F Troop's arrival on DVD with a complete first-season package on six discs is a bit unexpected -- after all, the series, a Western parody that helped mark the end of a cycle of television oaters that began a decade earlier with Gunsmoke, only ran for two seasons. But it has done well in syndication across the decades and made an impression on popular culture, sufficient to leave phrases from its scripts ("It is balloon!") in the collective unconscious. And it is still funny, in large measure, owing to the presence of Forrest Tucker, Larry Storch, Frank DeKova, James Hampton, and Ken Berry. There's also a cheerful innocence about the series when seen today, and pre-politically correct humor in connection with popular notions of the Old West. The show looks and sounds sensational in these transfers. The contrasts are rich and the details are amazing, right down to the fabric in the uniforms of the troopers. The episodes get no chapter breakdowns, but the plotting is so brisk and straightforward that little is needed in the way of outlining. Each of the six platters opens automatically on a simple, easy-to-use menu that advances automatically as each episode concludes, and also includes a "play all" option. The volume is nice and loud and the audio is so clean that the lyrics to the opening theme -- which explain how Wilton Parmenter (Ken Berry) went from private to captain and was given command of Fort Courage -- are even easier to understand than they were originally. The presence of such guest stars as Jack Elam, George Gobel (whose guest appearance is probably the best of the season and the second best in the run of the series, only slightly less entertaining than Lew Parker's episode in a second-season episode), Henry Gibson, and Edward Everett Horton only adds to the appeal of this season of the show.
