Nicole Kidman stars with both humans and ghosts in the chilling horror hit The Others. Dimension has done a fine job of making sure that this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer appears free of any defects or blemishes. The color patterns appear very bright and natural while the black levels are spot on and dark. The audio is presented on Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English and French. This 5.1 mix is very effective as it utilizes a ton of creepy, atmospheric sounds in both the front and rear speakers to scare the viewer silly. Also included on this disc are English and Spanish subtitles. This two-disc "Collector's Series" sports a few meaty extra features, though not as many as some fans might wish. The first feature, titled "A Look Inside: The Others," is a 22-minute featurette on the making of the film, its success, and what the cast and crew thinks of how it all came together. "Xeroderma Pigmentosum" is a look at a child suffering from this rare disease (an allergic reaction to bright sunlight). This is an emotional and very poignant feature, and the best on this set. "An Intimate Look at Director Alejandro Amenabar" includes nine minutes of on-the-set footage of the director working with the cast. Finally, there is a five-minute effects piece on the production of the special effects, a still gallery with about 40 behind-the-scenes images, a theatrical trailer for the film, and bonus trailers for other Dimension titles.
