Seems to work well
on September 21, 2017
Posted by: SgtRock
from Nashville, TN
I was anxious to try this out, as I have family living in some "not so well covered" areas of the country, and wanted to see if this could really boost my phone signal well enough so that I could 1) hear and 2) not have the call dropped.
The answer, fortunately, is yes to both counts. I purposely used this in areas that I know are typically trouble spots and I could hear, and didn't suffer a single dropped call...until I got to an area with no coverage. Unfortunately there's nothing the weboost can do about areas with no coverage at all, which is to totally be expected.
I'm not going to lie and say I'm absolutely sure it was due to this product that the signal seemed better (It still showed as the same '1 bar' on my phone display) but my calls were clearer and weren't lost, so there's that. I've only had it a month and only attempted to use it in remote areas a couple of times now, so more testing is required, but so far so good.
It does get a little warm, I've noticed, and the plugs can be a little awkward, though this is just as much due to needing to have 50 things plugged in in my car anymore as it is an issue with this product. That's the nature of the times we live in I suppose.
If you want to try something like this before getting frustrated and switching carriers this is probably the cheapest product you'll find that does the trick.

Nice pictures, but a few issues
on August 17, 2017
Posted by: SgtRock
from Nashville, TN
I have been a big fan of hp printers so was happy to get the chance to review the 7855 All-in-one printer. As usual the print quality is great, but there are so many quirks and other issues with this printer that it's more difficult to use than it should be.
Unpacking the printer was fine. It's packed well, and the quick set up instructions are clear. The size and weight are good for an all-in-one (it's half the size of my officejet pro, so that's nice). You'll see the first of MANY ads for HP's ink service in the literature. Get used to it, as it's everywhere.
Set up started out simple, but you HAVE to download an app to complete it (if there's a way to do it without an app I couldn't find it). I downloaded the app and it was simple enough. It walks you through step-by-step to set it up and get connected. One fantastic innovation is the screen where it asks you to enter your router password IT ADDS A NUMBER LINE to the top of the letter line (my pixel usually makes me switch between screens)!!! This is maybe the most helpful thing any set up app has ever done. Small innovations like that are great, I just wish there'd been more. I had to go back and forth between my app and the touchscreen, but it's very easy for one to get ahead of the other so you'll likely find yourself clicking quickly through screens to get caught up.
Don't click too quickly though, since you'll be asked again to sign up for HP's ink service. The opt out is very small, but it's there. It may be a good deal, but frankly I was so inundated with advertisements that it turned me off to the whole idea. Don't ask me if I'm sure once I've managed to see the very small opt out button. If you made me do that much work to find it then yes, I'm sure.
Another annoyance is yet another redesigned ink cartridge. I get that printers have different designs, but a real innovation would be managing to make your ink cross compatible between models. Of course you'll be reminded you can always subscribe to the ink service! The new cartridges aren't any easier or more difficult to load than old ones, though the location is a bit odd.
The other aspect of set up is loading the paper, and unfortunately that's a bit of a hassle too. The paper tray itself is nice, in that it holds both picture and printer paper in two separate compartments, one on top of the other. This would have been a fine design, except you have to remove the feed tray to really get to them. A minor annoyance, but these things add up.
As far as printing goes the app gets some real points here. You can print directly from your phone, AND from facebook! It's very easy, though the editing options are limited. The pictures printed very well, though for some reason the "automatic paper size" detection detected 5 x 7 paper when it was 4 x 6. I checked the paper tray and everything was loaded tight. I had to remove the tray and paper, then load the paper again. The next time I tried the app it was the right size. Not sure if that's on the printer or the app, but again, another minor annoyance. I also tried to change the "layout" option on several pictures, but it printed them the same way no matter what I chose. The quality of the pictures was terrific, but it wasn't really responsive to what I was choosing on the app.
The touchscreen on the printer itself is extremely responsive. You can scan, copy, or print pictures from a memory card or thumb drive. This worked very well and didn't have the same problems printing from the phone did.
The most annoying thing by far is that the printer just seems to "lose" it's connection from time-to-time. I printed three pictures from the app, then the app said "no printer found". I had to unplug and plug it in again, as the touch screen was also unresponsive. That's happened twice so far. I don't know if it's a software issue or what, but it's extremely annoying when it happens. You'll know right away on your phone since it won't detect your printer, but it's harder to tell trying to print from a network device. I suspect it's an early software issue and that a patch will be forthcoming for it, but it's annoying.
These are all minor things but they're enough to really affect my review score. When it works it prints beautiful, detailed, vibrant pictures, so hopefully a fix for the biggest issue (printer randomly dropping off the network) will be coming.

Very good juicer
on August 14, 2017
Posted by: SgtRock
from Nashville, TN
This is my first juicer (aside from the old-fashioned hand-juicers my grandparents had) so my experience is a bit limited.
Unpacking and assembling the juicer is very easy. It snaps together in a way that makes sense, but the instructions are provided if you need to refer to them. It took maybe two minutes to put together and plug in. It comes apart just as easily!
As far as making juice goes it seems to do a very good job. My wife and I tried a few recipes we found online. Mixtures of carrot and celery juice, limes, pineapples, apples and strawberries. The juicer seemed to grind them all and extract quite a bit of juice without any problem. There are mixtures of pulp and fruit left in the machine, but it's a much smaller amount than what I was expecting.
Unfortunately, it wasn't exactly "no mess" but more "very little mess." There was definitely some bits escaping--mostly from the feed tube. Not a lot, but enough that if you're a clean freak it might bother you.
If you are a clean freak the best part of this juicer is how easy it is to disassemble and clean. As mentioned it comes apart quickly and easily, which makes cleaning it a breeze. For things like this I generally hand wash, but it is described as being dishwasher safe.
Overall this juicer does the job and is easy to clean. If you're very into juicing this should do the trick!

Another great headset from Logitech
on August 9, 2017
Posted by: SgtRock
from Nashville, TN
I own a Logitech headset for my computer and loved it so much I wanted one for my Xbox as well. This set fits the bill perfectly (and actually sounds better than my last pair).
This is a great headset. It feels very sturdy and is actually large enough to fit my (apparently) giant head. This has actually been an issue for me before so I trusted Logitech to keep their sizing consistent. They fit well, and feel comfortable: snug over the ears, but not so tight as to be uncomfortable, particularly when wearing glasses. The padding is very light and well-cushioned. They are sturdy while not being too heavy, which is great if you're wearing them for long hours of gaming.
The sound through my Xbox was good. Nice highs, deep lows, and can get really loud if desired. The sound is much better through my PC, but that's to be expected--particularly when watching a movie or netflix--due to the limitations of the Xbox. I was so blown away by the PC sound I may actually end up switching which headsets I use. My other Logitech's sound good, but they aren't 7.1 like these, and these sound AMAZING. I tested with several "directional" games--Wolfenstein, Rocket League and Overwatch, and it was really impressive how easily you could tell where other players were from the sound.
The mic is fantastic as well. I like to change my keybindings for mic control on my games to my fifth mouse button, and the mic is incredibly responsive. It opens the channel as soon as I've clicked the button. I had to turn my sensitivity down a tad, as it picks up everything, but that's what you want from a mic. It's important to me that I not have to talk loudly since my family is often sleeping while I play, so a good mic is a necessity.
The case is nice though I doubt I'll use it often. It's cool that it's the same color and pattern as the headset. I also like the bag for accessories--that I will use just to help keep track of where they are. The accessories are serviceable in that they help you use these with a few different systems which only increases their versatility if you plan on using them with multiple devices.
Overall this is another slam-dunk from Logitech for a gaming headset. Highly recommended.

Fantastic headphones!
on July 17, 2017
Posted by: SgtRock
from Nashville, TN
These are far and away the best wireless, Bluetooth headphones that I've ever used.
Pros:
• The sound quality is fantastic! Music sounds amazing, with clear highs and good, deep base. They can get very loud without distortion as well.
• They are sturdy. The headphones have rotating ear-pieces that snap into place. Once I adjusted them to my head I have walked AND run with them and they stay in place. I haven’t tried exercises with more motion (i.e. sit-ups or something like that) but these are so snug I don’t imagine they’d move.
• They are comfortable. The cushion does press down, but it doesn’t hurt. I’ve worn them for a couple of hours straight and never felt that pain that other headphones can cause your ears.
• The hard case is great (though a little large for packing). It is sturdy to protect the headphones and the pocket is perfect for carrying the cords.
• It includes a 3.5 cord!!! I can’t say enough about how great this is. It’s so annoying to pay a few hundred dollars for an amazing set of headphones…that you can’t use like regular headphones. It was great of JBL to think of this and is something that should be automatic with any wireless headphones.
• They are far and away the easiest Bluetooth device I’ve ever programmed. As soon as you turn them on a voice tells you the headphones are ready to connect and they start searching. It was so quick I honestly wasn’t ready (they’re charged out of the box). It found my phone immediately and has been paired with it ever since.
Con:
• The padding gets warm (as is the case with most over the ear headphones). Since I wear them to workout I’m afraid they might start to not smell so good, but I’ve been cleaning them regularly and the material seems to be high-quality.
There are a couple of other things that might annoy some, but I haven’t found to be an issue:
• The controls are oddly situated (though there aren’t a lot of options)—in most cases you’ll be pairing with a device that has a volume control though. I’ve used my phone every time so far and my phone volume control works fine.
• They aren’t noise cancelling, but I don’t mind that at all. I walk/run with them and that would be dangerous. If you’re planning on using them on a plane or some other situation where noise cancelling is something you need you should be aware that background noise can be heard with these on.
I am very happy with these and can’t recommend them enough.

Beautiful picture
on July 16, 2017

I have never had a projector type TV before and had no idea what to expect from this. I'm happy to report this is an amazing device.
First, the projector unit is well-packaged. The box is huge and the items inside packed with enough Styrofoam to keep everything safe. Total it weighed roughly 30 lbs.
The projector itself is also really large, but is incredibly versatile in how it can be used. You will need a pretty large space, but it can be used either in front-of or behind a screen, it can sit on a (sturdy) table OR it can be mounted from the ceiling. The manual and remote are very easy to understand, and the remote has a handy button for flipping the picture if needed.
One really cool thing the manual explains is how far back to place your projector for the size screen you want. This was very easy to understand and much-appreciated. It's also very handy for setting up a "theater" room.
As with almost all projectors there is no sound, but there are several different types of connections available for easy integration with a sound bar or surround sound system, including an optical connector.
The picture is the best I've seen on a projector. It's bright with amazing color pop, and incredible contrast straight out of the box. I tried it first just on an off-white wall and was very impressed with how sharp the picture looked. I demo'd the 4k version of "La La Land" through a Sony 4k blu-ray player and was very impressed with the color reproduction and contrast. Like most projectors the darker the room the better the contrast--with all the lights out it was almost theater quality just on the wall. When projected onto a screen in a dark room it's stunning. We actually took ours outside to try it on a sheet at night and felt like we were at a drive-in.
This projector really is as easy or as complicated as you'd like it to be. You can do a quick set-up and just throw it on a table and project it on a wall, or you can mount it from your ceiling, wire a room around it and create a stunning theater room. The manual is simple to understand, and will walk you through complicated set-ups.
The remote is impressive and will do basically anything you need it to do, including calibrate the picture and bulb from right-to-left, up-and-down, and basically whatever you need to get your picture looking amazing.
This is a great starter piece to an amazing home theater. If you're looking specifically for a projector to build around you will be hard-pressed to find a better one than this for this type of money.

Neat speaker that does the job
on June 29, 2017
Posted by: SgtRock
from Nashville, TN
Having been a bit disappointed with the AQ10 I was given a chance to try the AQ11 and must say I'm really pleased with it.
It's a large speaker that is heavier than it looks, but isn't too heavy to lug around with other beach or pool supplies. It's also waterproof and includes a water-tight compartment for cord storage.
The documentation that comes with it is not very descriptive, but it's fairly easy to use in spite of that. If you've ever paired a bluetooth device before you'll be able to pair this. As soon as you turn on the speaker (it comes with a decent charge already, and a plug for recharging) you simply move the little "lock" switch to "unlock" and it will be visible to any bluetooth device. You'll probably want to mess with the volume controls between your phone and the speaker to find the best sound mix. I found it easiest to just control the volume with my phone controls.
It must be charged with it's own power supply, but the battery can last up to 15 hours (according to the manufacturer) and it can also charge other USB devices while playing. So in theory you can charge your phone while playing your phone through the speaker, which should help your phone battery last longer if it tends to drain faster while playing music like mine does.
The sound is surprisingly good. It's crisp, clear and loud, though it can become distorted at higher volumes depending on how you have your volume controls set. I found the distortion at higher volumes to be less if I turned my phone volume down and the speaker volume up. Like any speaker this size the bass isn't the best, but it's better than I expected and adequate for an outdoor speaker of this type.
The bluetooth range is fantastic. I placed this speaker at one end of my front yard and walked all the way to the back without ever losing the signal (200 yards at least).
If you have a need for a speaker like this--a permanent home on a boat or in a beach house for instance, then this speaker will do the job well.

Decent sound bar with some drawbacks
on June 26, 2017
Posted by: SgtRock
from Nashville, TN
Out of the package this is a very good-looking sound bar. It is very large compared to other sound bars I've seen. It does look sleek and has a cool, dark color. Samsung does their usual superb job with packaging--it's all very secure and protected.
The first thing I noticed is that it's VERY heavy for a sound bar. I'm not sure if this is due to the built-in sub-woofer, but it's probably the heaviest sound bar I've used. This could be an issue if you want to try and attach it to the bottom of a TV set. Due to the size and weight you'd want to have it attached to a large TV (55" at the smallest I'd say) or it will be noticeably longer than your set. You will also want to have a secure mount to account for the extra weight. Personally I don't think I'd trust it attached to the bottom of a TV and would probably just try to mount it on a wall below the TV.
The main HDMI connections are easy enough, unfortunately the digital optical connector is not as easy. It's great that it comes with the optical wire, but the design of the connection is recessed and at an angle--I could not get the connector to stay in place after trying for 15 very frustrating minutes.
The sound quality is crystal clear and very good with highs, but the lack of a sub-woofer is noticeable, particularly during action sequences. You simply can't get the low range that a separate sub-woofer provides. There are several different sound modes with noticeable differences between them.. The "surround" mode is surprisingly effective even though it's all contained in one unit. The stereo sound is nice when streaming music, though it tends to be directional and sound much better directly in front of the unit rather than at other spots in the room. It would be difficult to use this as anything other than supporting TV sound, so it's not a great substitute for an entire stereo system.
The remote is typical of Samsung's new design. I like it, but I'm already used to the "toggle" idea thanks to owning a Samsung TV. It can be confusing for first-time users.
The TV integrates amazingly well with current Samsung products. It found my TV right away through my wi-fi system, so that was pretty cool. Other wi-fi connections are more advanced than that. Like everything now there wasn't really a manual, so you'll likely find yourself scouring the internet for documentation on how to connect and more advanced options. Samsung's site is great for this, but it can be frustrating to have to research how to use your product rather than having good enough documentation included.
Overall this is a very good product from Samsung, and will do what you want it to do, particularly if you are pairing it with a Samsung TV. If you aren't pressed for space and want a deeper sound I would have to recommend a system with a dedicated sub-woofer over this speaker.

Perfect for kids!
on May 30, 2017

These are cute but sturdy enough headphones that my kids love. I have three children between the ages of 5-10 and they fit all three of them no problem. I'll be getting two more pairs as a gift for me for long car trips!
They are sturdy enough to withstand a decent amount of punishment though they're not unbreakable. My kids destroyed their last pairs of headphones right at the point where these fold, so I think that aspect of the design is fantastic.
They like the sound, and the way they fit so that's really all that matters. They also think it's really cool they have an mp3 player included. It's nice for me as now they can listen to the same songs over and over without subjecting me to them. Win-win!
Very much recommended for kids 4-10 (think they'd be a little small for any older, and big for any younger).

Beautiful but SMALL

First, these headphones are just gorgeous. Absolutely stunning. They most definitely look and even smell high-end, with a beautiful mix of leather and gun-metal black. They are obviously very well made headphones and they're packaged very well.
The biggest issue I had with them is they don't fit my head. Adjusting them as far as they go they just weren't big enough. I could get them partially over my ears but could never get the fit quite right and they left a sizable portion of my lower ear uncovered.
In order to adequately test them I had to hold them in place behind my head which wasn't ideal. They sounded terrific--crystal clear at both low and high volumes. They seemed like they would cancel out noises if you can fit them properly, but I couldn't really test them that way due to the fit.
I'll assume most people don't have the huge noggin' I do and won't have the same fit issues so I will recommend these. If you have a larger head (and you know who you are) you'll want to look elsewhere.

So im really trying to choose between the 17.3 inch and the 15.7 inch. I have some questions and it would be great if you can help me with choosing. 1st question: Is the 17.3 inch storage upgradable? 2nd: How much better is the max in the 15.7 inch?

With most gaming laptops upgrading the storage means replacing the drive in the system (there simply isn't room for another drive in most cases--which I believe is the case for either of these models). Your best bet is investing in a portable, external hard drive and taking it with the laptop. You can, of course, replace the drive in the system, but that can be pretty difficult since you'll need to copy a lot of the information in the current hard drive first, then transfer it all to the new drive, etc.

Can the thermostat be locked via the software so unauthorized people wouldn't be able to change the settings? I couldn't find this info in the users manual.

Yes--there is a very simple setting for this in the app (and ONLY in the app as far as I can tell)

Experience great gaming with this OMEN Obelisk desktop computer. This OMEN Obelisk desktop computer's case opens without tools for easy expansion.

I wanted to add another 16GB ram stick. What ram stick is compatible with the current hyper x fury 16 gb stick?

Kingston Technology HyperX Fury Black 16GB 2666MHz DDR4 CL16 DIMM (HX426C16FB/16)---that is the exact match for what's in the system now. If you want to try and find a cheaper match (good luck!) then you'll want to make sure the 16gb and 2666 mhz speed match, and of course that it's DDR4 and for a desktop. Amazon currently has a single stick on sale that matches for the lowest price I've seen, but it's the same exact memory stick. There may be cheaper, more generic options available as well.

Enjoy crisp, colorful picture quality with this Full HD HP monitor. The ultrathin bezel on the 27-inch screen provides an expansive viewing area so you can stay productive, and its AMD FreeSync technology reduces input lag and screen tearing. This HP monitor has two HDMI ports for connecting gaming consoles and other devices.

Is there any way to use a speaker with this monitor?

You'd have to have the speakers connected to your computer system itself--there are no speaker outputs on the monitor.

Nest Doorbell (Wired) lets you know who’s there, so you never miss a thing. It replaces your existing wired doorbell and delivers HD video and bright, crisp images, even at night. It’s designed to show you everything at your doorstep — people head to toe or packages on the ground. And with 24/7 streaming, you can check in anytime. Or go back and look at a 3-hour snapshot history to see what happened.*

Will Google Hello do a better job in regards to lag (delay) and motion detection? I had another video doorbell (rhimes with Ding) which could not adequately connect to the wifi, terrable lag, poor motion detection (false alarms and missed live ones).

From my testing there was very little lag. There is some, of course, but it was maybe 1-2 seconds behind. The motion detection seems to be perfect. It ignores far off motion, but records anything within 10-15 feet.

Listen to your favorite tunes on the go with this rechargeable iHome IBT74BC speaker, which features a Bluetooth interface, so you can stream music from most Bluetooth-enabled devices, including select Apple®, Android and BlackBerry models.

Does this only come with a cord to charge or does it have something you can plug into the wall with?

It plugs directly into an outlet (the plug is actually pretty large, the wire itself is not).
