rockin like dokken

when i think of metal, i think of waaaaaaahhh solos, long hair and fist pumping. luckily, there's none of that on this album. of all the mojack music i've heard, this one is by far the best because guitarist greg ginn (from black flag) takes control and plays lightning fast leads that are some of the best work of his career. the sax guy shreds too. ginn plays subdued, then goes avant garde, but this guy starts off the deep end and finishes at the bottom of the sea. it's really a trippy record from start to finish.

mojack is a free-form band that sounds like a punk rhythm section meets free jazz. the structures are simple, but the soloing is avant garde stuff that would make a lot of current jazz musicians jealous. the disc has 17 songs and each one blends these two worlds together in an interesting way. i love greg ginn's solos because mojack is loose enough for ginn to do some pretty avant garde stuff in his playing.

more greg ginn!

i must be on some sort of greg ginn kick right now because i can't get enough of all of his new cds. the taylor texas corrugators is totally different than his other new albums. this one is really mellow and doesn't have any of the abstract stuff that some of his other music has. this band has a upright bass player and a piano that fits nicely into the mix. the songs have no words but don't need them. ginn's guitar more than makes up for that!
What's great about it: relaxed, mellow

great new jam band

i've entered this review a few times but it never shows up. here's my latest try. i was surprised to hear jambang because i didn't know greg ginn from black flag was into jam bands. i loved punk as a kid but grew out of it later. when i heard he was in a jam band, i checked out their myspace page thinking it was going to suck. well, it doesn't. ginn's new band plays a spacey instrumental groove with a mandolin player that overlaps ginn's guitar. according to their myspace page, they are supposed to be touring and will have a video on screen. i am curious to see how this matches the video. the best part of this cd is the drummer and bass player. they hold it down for ginn and the mandolin to play really cool melodies.
What's great about it: jam band

more freaky stuff from greg ginn
on April 21, 2008

i also reviewed ginn's new band jambang and was expecting something similar for gone. but it's totally different. this cd has really long songs that start off one way and then go in a bunch of directions. there are two cds. one has no words nad the other has hr. it took me a while, but i started to like the epic trilogy after a few listens. it was confusing at first but once i got over that i realized tehre's some good stuff here.
What's great about it: abstract
