Two tales of love and hardship, played against the lush beauty of the South Pacific, are brought together on this twin-pack DVD set. In The Blue Lagoon, based on the novel by Henry Devere Stacpoole, Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins play Emmeline and Richard, two youngsters who are stranded on a tropical island. As they grow older, their childhood friendship grows into adult desire, though they must solve the mysteries of love with no one to guide them. Eleven years after the box-office success of The Blue Lagoon, Return to the Blue Lagoon followed, in which Emmeline and Richard's son, Richard (Brian Krause), and the daughter of his adoptive guardian, Lilli (Milla Jovovich), become stranded on the same island, with romantic rivalries entering the picture when they are rescued.

Jeff Franklin's pointed romantic comedy Love Stinks comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. English, French, and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by the director and the cast, trailers, production notes, and talent files. Whatever one thinks of the film, this is a great disc from Columbia/TriStar.

Clark Griswold and his family take on Sin City in this comedy, which gets a fine presentation for its release on DVD. Vegas Vacation has been given a letterboxed transfer at the aspect ratio of 1.85:1, which has also been enhanced for widescreen playback on 16 x 9 monitors. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital 5.1, and in addition to the original English-language soundtrack, an alternate track in French is available, as well as optional subtitles in English, Spanish, and French. As a bonus, the disc also includes production notes and the film's original theatrical trailer.

Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan's high school comedy Can't Hardly Wait comes to DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen transfer preserves the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and is preferable to the standard full-frame transfer. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Stereo, while a French soundtrack has also been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. Subtitles are accessible in both of those languages as well. Supplemental materials include a commentary track by the directors and cast, a photo gallery, a theatrical trailer, and the music video for Smash Mouth's "Can't Get Enough of You Baby." This is a solid disc from Columbia/TriStar.

The mermaid comedy classic Splash comes back to DVD in a jam-packed 20th Anniversary Edition thanks to Touchstone Home Entertainment. Presented in an anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen picture with brand-new Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, the flick looks and sounds better than ever. Bonus features are where this sucker really scores the points, and it all starts with the "Making a Splash" all-new featurette. Clocking in at 24 minutes and chock-full of interviews new and old, the making-of is a fun and informative look at the film through the eyes of all involved (including a few archival moments with the great John Candy). Also worth a look are the original Ron Howard audition tapes with Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah. An introduction by Howard leads you into these interesting glimpses at the stars-before-they-were-stars as they work out deliveries and character quirks in a back-and-forth with the director. If that weren't enough, you also get a group commentary from Ron Howard's gang of partners in crime, including the director himself, his spiky-haired producer chum Brian Grazer, and the hilarious comedy writing duo of Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel. The chat is light and brisk as the track bops its way along, with Mandel and Ganz cracking wise every chance they get, while Grazer proves once again why producers don't make for good commentators -- the "This is Brian" tag that he throws in literally before everything he says gets old really fast! Some would call out the studio for not including a trailer, but that unfortunately seems to be the norm in big discs these days. If you're a fan of the flick and have been looking forward to a better version than the first slim release, you'll flip over this edition.

Cameron Crowe's sophomore effort Singles comes to DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.66:1, and is preferable to the standard full-frame image. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. Subtitles are accessible in both of those languages as well. Supplemental materials include the trailer, deleted scenes, and production notes. This is a decent release from Warner Brothers, but considering the respected soundtrack the film spawned it is surprising that there are not some extra features about it.
