JoseFurry's Reviews

One of the most influential and popular films of the 1990's finally gets the DVD treatment it deserves on this fantastic two-disc set from Miramax. Video and audio quality are both stellar: the new anamorphically-enhanced widescreen transfer shows off the cinematography in all its colorful, kitschy glory and the stereo soundtracks (DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1) dish up a punchy, crystal-clear soundtrack that is guaranteed to give the stereo speakers a workout. Pulp Fiction also offers a staggering array of extras guaranteed to keep film fans occupied for hours on end. First up is a subtitle trivia track that replaces the usual commentary track. Some fans might be disappointed that they don't get to hear Tarantino's enthusiastic musings in audio form but this exhaustive trivia track makes up for this by supplying every bit of minutiae that a fan could want to know: it covers everything from the film's inspirations to on-the-set stories to explanations of the many symbols and references used in the film. There is also a fantastic new documentary that uses interviews old and new and a variety of background footage to create a slickly-edited and fast-paced portrait of the history and influence of Pulp Fiction. Fans will be pleased by the inclusion of deleted scenes that are set up with on-screen intros from Tarantino, video clips of Tarantino directing a pair of the film's scenes and the inclusion of the infamous Palme D'Or acceptance speech that features the director having to fend off a zealous heckler as he makes his remarks. Elsewhere, this special edition represents the critical response to Pulp Fiction with an episode of Siskel and Ebert devoted to the Tarantino phenomenon and a gallery of text articles that analyze the film. The package is rounded out with a great episode of the Charlie Rose Show that features Rose interviewing Tarantino at length, a production design featurette and a barrage of trailers and publicity material. In short, Miramax's special edition of Pulp Fiction is both the definitive edition of this film and a thorough primer on its enduring influence on the world of filmmaking.

Better than The Godfather

Quentin Tarentino proves to us again that he is a brilliant director with Pulp Fiction. The movie plays different scenes at a time so you gotta follow up, but its all worth it. This is a great film and will keep you watching nonstop. The action and comedic blend of Pulp Fiction is a superb recipe for sheer brilliance. The DVD cover is a flap and opens up to Uma Thurman. Two discs with behind the scenes and deleted scenes its worth it. One of my favorites and if you dont believe how great it is just know Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, and Bruce Willis star in this icon.

Director Marcus Nispel's over-the-top remake of Tobe Hooper's unrelenting horror masterpiece arrives on DVD in fine form with New Line Home Entertainment's Platinum Series double-disc release of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, the image offers a near-perfect presentation of cinematographer Daniel Pearl's lush photography, save for some serious signs of edge-enhancement. Likewise, the English DTS-ES Surround Sound audio mix provides an eerie and effective grab bag of directional effects in addition to providing an ideal showcase for the shrieking, room-shaking buzz of the ever-familiar saw. Other audio options include English Dolby Digital EX 5.1 and English Dolby Digital Stereo Surround, with optional English and Spanish subtitles. As with their other Platinum Series releases, New Line has seen fit to include an abundance of extra features that, though slightly repetitive, will certainly have fans swooning. Starting off the extras, three audio commentary tracks cover the "Production," "Technical," and "Story" aspects of the feature, and it won't take viewers long to get the drift that there may have been a few too many cooks in this kitchen. From the revelation that the man driving this project is none other than The Bachelor and Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire? producer Mike Fleiss to the admittance by the director that he has never seen the original film, the "Production" commentary is something of a mixed bag; and, while the "Technical" commentary provides interesting, detailed information regarding the photographic and special-effects techniques used in the film (the latter of which is covered more comprehensively in the "Chainsaw Redux: Making a Massacre" featurette), it's the "Story" commentary that offers the most compelling listen, with actors' comments and script changes offering a depth that may have been somewhat lacking in the final product. The aforementioned feature-length making-of documentary "Chainsaw Redux: The Making of a Massacre" offers production insight from such contributors as producer Michael Bay and executive producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, a chilling glimpse at an all-too-eager Andrew Bryniarski (Leatherface) as he gets onto character and freaks out the actors, and an exciting look at what might have been one of the bleakest horror endings ever committed to celluloid had screenwriter Scott Kosar had his way. Male lead Eric Balfour's hilarious exit on the last day of shooting must be seen to be believed. "Severed Parts" offers an intriguing look at footage that was left on the cutting room floor; although an alternate opening and closing (complete with S.W.A.T. team raid on the family farm) certainly aren't missed in the final product, a few omitted character revelations as well as some excised violence offer a glimpse at a film that would have truly gone for the throat (or crotch as it may be). Viewers in search of a real scare, however, need look no further than "Ed Gein: The Ghoul of Plainfield," a short documentary covering the shocking true-life atrocities that inspired the film. The phrase "truth is stranger than fiction" has rarely rung more true than here, and though much of the featurette is presented with cheesy stock footage, the story of Ed Gein is still powerful and frightening enough to resonate through the somewhat hokey execution. Shot-on-video screen tests for stars Jessica Biel, Eric Balfour, and Erica Leerhsen offer testament to the power of a scream thanks to Leerhsen's formidable shriek, and a handful of trailers (including producer Michael Bay's original audio-only preview) offer a fun look at the film's promotional campaign. A music video for the Motograter song "Suffocate" exposes the new Texas Chainsaw's nu-metal roots, and potential filmmakers get a crash course in production thanks to such DVD-ROM features as script-to-screen comparison and a storyboard viewer. Rounding things out nicely is a bloodstained envelope ominously labeled "Evidence Enclosed," containing numerous grainy, black-and-white stills of chainsaws, mallets, items made from human body-parts, and other chilling images.

The collector's edition of this movie is amazing. It opens up to be a chainsaw. The two disc collector's edition also comes with a metal faceplate of Letherface and evidence photos of the movie based crimes. Behind the scenes look at the making is really good. The movie itself would keep you in awe and shock. Great buy, no a best buy!
What's great about it: Best Texas Chainsaw Masscre *besides the original*

One of the most popular and critically acclaimed series in the history of the American cinema, Francis Ford Coppola's Godfather trilogy arrives on DVD in a box set that truly presents these films with the care and respect they deserve. All three films have been given 1.85:1 letterboxed transfers, which are enhanced for playback on widescreen monitors; the audio has been remixed for Dolby Digital 5.1, with alternate French-language tracks in Dolby Digital mono. Francis Ford Coppola recorded commentary tracks for all three films, and the set also includes an in-depth documentary on the making of the Godfather films. Other bonus materials include a number of deleted scenes, biographical profiles of the cast and the filmmakers, featurettes on the film's music and photography, a look at the production storyboards, and much more. The Godfather DVD Collection offers a near-definitive look at three of the most influential and acclaimed motion pictures of their time.

The two-disc special edition of David Fincher's Seven should more than satisfy hard-core fans of the film by dramatically improving on the initial, single-disc version of the film. It boasts excellent audio options: English Dolby EX 5.1, DTS ES Discreet 6.1 and Stereo Surround Sound, with subtitles available in English and French. It also features incredible picture quality in an anamorphic widescreen letterbox format, remastered from the original negative and set at a theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. The special features are abundant, including four feature length audio commentaries by David Fincher, Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman and others, deleted scenes and extended takes, the original theatrical trailer, a DVD-ROM "John Doe" website that probes the killer's mind with his fan sites, reading list, his photo gallery and a penetrating look at the seven deadly sins; alternate endings to the picture with animated storyboards to illustrate them and an electronic press kit, and several galleries with production designs and stills.

Brad Pitt stars in what I feel is his best performance by far! Morgan Freeman and Gwyneth Paltrow co-star, along with Kevin Spacey. Se7en takes you in the mind of a serial killer using the seven deadly sins as his tools. One of my favorites and will soon becomes yours.
What's great about it: The Compositon Book Style DVD Case Is Great.

The first DVD for Memento, released shortly after its theatrical run, was a decent disc with fine picture and sound, but somewhat weak on special features. For its second release on DVD, Columbia TriStar has made amends for those omissions. First, though, the image is flawless. The anamorphic 1.85:1 picture, even for a relatively low-budget film, is impeccable with solid blacks and colors that are vivid. The black-and-white segments are also perfectly realized, retaining the grainy look of the theatrical presentation. Equally strong is the sound, in both Dolby Digital and DTS formats, with just the right use of the surround speakers, and clear representation in the front. Dialogue and effects are distinct and show no signs of distortion. As mentioned, the supplemental features on this disc are plentiful, but it's a double-edged sword. This two-disc set includes a new commentary track on the first disc from director Christopher Nolan, but the second disc stores the majority of the extras, including production sketches and photographs, trailers, a featurette, the script, poster art, and the original story Memento Mori. Also included are a number of unadvertised features such as bootleg cover art, a props gallery, concept art, and most importantly, a chronologically ordered version of the film. All of that is undeniably impressive, and while the programmers for this disc have done everything they can to be creative, accessing these extra features is thoroughly annoying. The menus, which comprise of intricate puzzles, are so complicated that the majority of viewers might just find themselves watching the movie and ignoring all of the fascinating special features. In addition, the packaging, while unique, is not ideal, with the disc housed in a paper cover, and rather difficult to remove. Even with its flaws, this is a mighty impressive re-release.

If you are like myself and enjoy buying collectors sets this is one for you. The movie itself is amazing. Chris Nolan directs his greatest film so far. Guy Pearce is excellent and does a fantastic performance.
