I first heard about this movie on anime news network and didn't really think anything of it. I started the movie and it instantly drew me in. As soon as it starts it throws you into this fantastic visually stimulating world. I honestly haven't seen fluid animation like this in such a long time. This movie was supposed to be released a few years ago, but due to some setbacks it wasn't. So it was in production for almost a whole decade. But I digress, as to not ruin anything, I won't go too far into detail.
The first race pulls you in and doesn't let go. I was actually out of my seat rooting for the main character to win lol. After the first race, the movie dulls down a little to deliver the finer points of detail, like character descriptions and some of their history. Sounds boring right? Nope, I can assure you that it is anything but boring.
The crazy thing about this movie is that it has soooooo many random parts into that make you say "What?", but at the same time you understand why they put it there and what's actually going on. This is actually what made me watch this for like 2 days straight lol.
If you're a big fan of anime and don't mind subtitles, I highly suggest watching this in its native language(Japanese). It adds to the feel of the movie in general because the actors basically bring the characters to a whole other level.
Another great thing is the soundtrack. It's just about perfect in every way for the movie, BUT it's not for everyone. It can get a little over the top rave style here and there(which I honestly love).
Short Version: A racing/love story with comical aspects thrown in. STOP!! You better not be thinking Fast and the Furious, b/c it's nothing like that.
DO NOT pass this up. Even if you turn out not liking it, it won't(shouldn't) seem like a waste of time/disappointment at all. It'll appeal to you one way or another. MADHOUSE really took my breath away with this and I hope they're working on another project right now.
If you remember Donald Glover(Childish Gambino) as just a actor or comedian, prepare to be blown away. Like any other musician, he takes things that have happened in his life and throws them in his music with the addition of some hyperbole here and there. His album Camp is no different. BUT It's not just a bunch of songs thrown together to make money. He is actually telling a story, a very interesting one at that. It's just like the title says "Camp". By the time you get done listening to it you'll understand a lot about him and what he went through at not only the camp but also after releasing his first mixtape.
I honestly can't pick a favorite song from the album because they're all great. The lyrics on every said is almost breath taking because you can vibe to it. This album is a must for all of my workouts. He's not dull when rapping either. He gets extremely loud when needed i.e; Bonfire. Then he's lower at other times i.e; All the Shine or better yet Letter Home.
Description/Review of some of the songs; Outside- Is the best opening to a cd I've heard in a long time. He's saying that there is a world outside of your own. And gives examples of it like his mom at gun point or his cousin being mean to him because he has a dad. 5/5
Fire Fly- Think about this, a Fire Fly sticks out in the night when you go camping. He's saying that he sticks out just like that and everyone is trying to catch him(caged) or catch up to him. 4/5
Bonfire- Like those nights at camp where you sit around and tell stories. Think about this song as a story within a story, as if to scare you (which of course it doesn't). One of the reasons this song is great is because he uses punchlines and includes real world problems and such. Ex: Made the beat then murdered it, Casey Anthony. 5/5
I'll leave the rest for you to hear and figure out on your own. The album is great, and even better once you get the meaning behind his lyrics. All in all, camp gets a 5/5 from me.
