Popping Sound and A Broken Android App
on September 18, 2020
Posted by: RedScorpion
from Oklahoma City, OK
I'm writing this review a bit frustrated. I received these headphones for purposes of review. And I really wanted to like these headphones. There's a lot to like: wireless Xbox connectivity and Bluetooth built-in. They're light and feel comfortable on the ears. USB-C charging. Customizable buttons. The 50MM drivers sounded great when I started listening to them. The headphone power button can turn on your XBOX console and the headphones power down whenever you turn the console off. There was a brief period where these were my favorite gaming headphones.
But after two hours of use, the headphones begin to pop and crackle when connected to an XBOX or XBOX PC adapter. If I charge them, they work fine, again, for another two hours. I connected the headphones to my XBOX One, a custom PC with an XBOX Wireless Adapter, and a Microsoft Surface Book 3 which has a built-in XBOX wireless adapter. Same problems with all three: audio that cut in and out with popping and cracks.
I should note that as Bluetooth headphones, I rarely noticed any popping. If the slight latency doesn't bother you, I guess you could use these as gaming headphones via Bluetooth. As Bluetooth only headphones, these headphones worked much better.
Then there's the app. The headphones use a mobile app on either Android or iPhone to connect and make changes to buttons and audio settings. But no matter what I tried, the Android app couldn't find my headset. The app on my iPad and on an iPhone could find the headset and worked flawlessly, but the Android app just wouldn't work. I tested on a Samsung Galaxy s10e, a Samsung Galaxy Tab S4, and a Google Pixel 4 with no success. A quick check on the Google Play Store showed I was not the only one having issues with the App. The Turtle Beach Audio Hub on the Google Play Store is currently sitting at 2 stars out of 5 with over 6000 reviews. Most users complaining about the same thing: app can't find their headset.
Before anyone wonders if I screwed something up by connecting to an iPhone first, I didn't. I tried connecting to the s10e first and it was at the time when I had given up on the app working at all, that I was shocked to find that it worked just fine on Apple devices.
By the way, since these are XBOX headphones, why isn't there an audio app or software download on the XBOX and Windows Store? Why do I even need a mobile app? It's a neat feature (when it works), but why no application on the XBOX itself?
These headphones need a firmware update. According to audio hub on PC, I have firmware version 1.7.3 which is the latest firmware as of the time of this writing. Hopefully, these headphones get an update in the not too distant future.
I can't recommend these headphones in their current state. This is disappointing. I was really looking forward to these headphones. I've had wired Turtle Beach headphones in the past. These headphones are comfortable. When fully charged, they sound great. The details are impressive. The microphone noise gate and customizable buttons are great features. But there's no point if the app is nonfunctional and the headphones pop and cut out after just a few hours of use.
I'm going to set these headphones to the side for a bit and hope that these headphones improve with firmware and software updates. Hopefully these are problems that will be patched out soon.

Does The Job for iPads and Power Hungry Portables
on September 3, 2020

The Belkin Boost Charge 24W is a reliable, no frills car charging solution. Each USB port provides 12W, the same as the standard USB-A iPad charger from Apple. The device functions as expected and I have no qualms with recommending it.
Some notes:
The charger sticks out a bit from the base of the car's DC port. I would have preferred the charger fitting a bit more snug. This charger tends to wobble a bit and comes out a bit too easily when trying to unplug USB-A cables.
I should note that this charger does not have a USB-C charging port and it does not support fast charging for Android devices. If those features are important to you, you should probably look elsewhere.

All-in-1 Indoor Grill Works Great
on September 2, 2020
Posted by: RedScorpion
from Oklahoma City, OK
I should say up front that I received this item for purposes of review. And, I'm not going to lie, I haven't eaten this well in a while. The steaks alone made this a great item to review.
The thermometer made cooking steaks extremely easy. The onscreen display tracked the progress of the steaks and let me know when they were ready to rest at my desired level of doneness. The air crisper produced crispy and hot french fries in a fraction of the time of a traditional oven.
Somethings that I learned and weren't obvious to me up front:
1. Avoid using olive oil as it can produce more smoke. Instead use canola, coconut, or vegetable oil.
2. If you plan on using the thermometer, make sure your meat is thick enough for the thermometer to be effective. I tried using the thermometer on some thinner hamburger patties and the machine thought they were done when they clearly weren't.
3. If you should need more time or need to turn the device back-on, you can skip preheating by holding down on the preheat button.
4. Make sure that the FoodieXL has its own dedicated power outlet and that it is on a 15 amp circuit breaker.
I wish there was a bit more space for grilling and air frying at the same time, but as it is, this is a large unit. It takes up approx. 15 inches by 15 inches of spaces with a height around a foot. It's going to need a decent amount of counter space or closet space for storage.
Ninja sells a roaster rack and a combination air frying and grilling rack, but sadly they don't come included by default. Be sure to check out the ninja website for accessory options.
The device is loud, but I didn't think it was much louder than my stove's exhaust fan. Using the approved oils, I never noticed much if any smoke. The food tasted great. If you have the space and are interested in an indoor grill / air fryer combo, the FoodieXL is easy to recommend!

Power and Stability for Your Devices
on August 19, 2020
Posted by: RedScorpion
from Oklahoma City, OK
I should disclose up front that I received the APC Back-UPS 900VA for purposes of review. But, I have been a fan of APC and their consumer line of uninterruptible power supplies for over twenty years. The APC - Back-UPS 900VA is another stable power back-up from APC.
The Back-UPS 900VA is a standby power back-up. Most of the time, your devices will operate from the wall current. If there is a power disruption, the UPS will take over. The amount of time between the switch is insignificant for most electronic devices and can ensure your internet stays operational or that you have just a few more minutes to save and shut down your PC.
And in my experience, these back-ups are essential. Nothing more frustrating that a freak power outage as you are working on a project. For many years, brown outs and surges were frying my computer’s components. Using a UPS with my desktop PC saved me from costly repairs and lost productivity.
This model is a bit slimmer and takes up less space than the APCs of a few years ago. There are voltage sensitivity adjustments and a quick mute for the power outage alarm.

Older APC models had the ability to hook up to a computer’s USB port so that the computer would know when it was on a battery and could save and shut down even without a user present. That port has sadly disappeared from recent entries and this model of the 900VA is no different. If that feature is important to you, you may need to look at a different model.

APC produces various power back-ups such as the 450VA and 650VA models. In general, the higher the number, the longer your back-up will operate in the event of a power outage. In my experience, the 450VA was fine if I was just wanting a few minutes to shut down a computer. But the 650VA and the 900VA will give you more time with your devices.
This model has a built-in 2.1A USB port. The port could be useful to charge your phone in a power outage. However, in my experience, the port does not support rapid charge for Samsung and Google devices.
I recommend APC. APC’s back-ups have helped me out for years. I recommend this power back-up.

Good Everyday Headset
on July 30, 2020
Posted by: RedScorpion
from Oklahoma City, OK
The Play Gaming Wireless Headset” from JLAB is an interesting if contradictory set of headphones. They are not terribly big. In fact, these may be the smallest over the ears headphones I have owned in a good long while. They advertise themselves as being wireless, but they are only wireless when you can pair them with a Bluetooth device. If you intend to use them with a gaming console such as the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, or PS4, you will need to use the included auxiliary cable i.e. a wire. The headphones are only wireless when you pair them with a phone, a tablet, or a Bluetooth enabled PC. But the Bluetooth 5 works well. and produces the best audio in my opinion. JLAB markets the headphones as wireless gaming headphones, but they’re really more of a “do everything” set of headphones. The wireless audio quality is particularly good, and as a “do everything” set of headphones, they check all the boxes.
I feel like I have to preface every discussion about this headset with "but for the price". I have better gaming headphones. I have better music headphones. They may not be the best at any one thing, but "for the price" I don’t have headphones that do everything as easily or as conveniently as these headphones do. At this price point, these headphones are easy to recommend. The sound is good. The functionality is good. And if they break down the line, it won't cost a fortune to replace them.

Audio Quality:
The driver / speaker size for these headphones isn’t terribly big. Many gaming headsets come with a 50mm driver. I believe the Play Wireless headset utilizes a 40MM driver. The diameter of each speaker is about 2.5 inches. As a result, the audio quality when I hook these headphones up to my Xbox or Nintendo switch isn’t the greatest. If you're an audiophile, I can't say these headphones sound the best. Sounds are a bit muffled and the details aren’t as rich as I would like. But the audio quality improves quite a bit when paired with a Bluetooth device. I never noticed wireless distortion or static. I didn't notice a delay when gaming or watching Netflix. The Bluetooth 5 connectivity works quite well.
You have two equalizer settings to choose from in Bluetooth mode: gaming and music. There are not any advanced surround modes or other mixing options.
The retractable boom mic works well. In my experience, individuals on the other end of the line said I sounded clear. In phone calls and online game sessions, I had no problems being heard.

Wireless Performance:
Battery life has been good. JLAB advertises a 22-hour+ battery life on the box. In my experience, I could use these headphones for 6 to 8 hours and only have used around 25 to 30 percent of the battery. That’s pretty good for wireless headphones and makes these headphones great for travel, work from home, or long online gaming sessions.
Wireless pairing took me a second or two to figure out. The pairing button is the power button. If you want to pair these headphones, you must make sure that the headphones are off before beginning to pair. If you try to pair them while the headphones are on, the headphones will just turn off. So, with the headphones off, you hold down the power / pairing button for 8 seconds until the power light flashes between blue and red. At that point, your headphones are ready to pair.
Functionality:
Because of the limited space on each speaker, JLAB has many of the buttons serving multiple functions. For example, the power button is also the pause button, the hang-up button, and the pairing button. Getting these buttons to work as intended means that you have to know the difference between a press and a hold. If you hold down on the volume up button, you will tell the headphones you want to select the next audio track. If you want to turn the volume up, you must tap the volume controls. It’s not entirely intuitive, but it works and eventually I got used to it. The physical mute button on the earpiece is easy to use.
Comfort:
In my opinion, over the ear headphones are more comfortable than buds that fit in the ear. These headphones fit well enough and do a good job of muffling out outside sounds when in use. Probably because of their size, I never felt like the headphones got terribly hot. But I’d be lying if I said they were the most comfortable pair of headphones I had worn, either. The cushion around the speaker doesn't breathe particularly well. The headphones tend to rest on rather than sealing around the ear. I can't say my ears ever got that hot, but I never forgot that I was wearing a headset, either.
Conclusion:
The Play Gaming Wireless Headset is an interesting pair of headphones. As a strictly gaming headset, there are better options. As strictly music headphones, there are better options. But as an everyday headset that works with gaming consoles and Bluetooth enabled phones, tablets, and computers, these headphones are quite good. Their size and portability make them a good set of travel headphones. The retractable mic and excellent battery life make them good headphones for the individual working and telecommuting from home. I wish the audio quality and comfort was a bit better. But if you’re looking for all-in-one wireless headphones on a budget, I find these headphones easy to recommend.

Buy This Hand Mixer
on July 9, 2020
Posted by: RedScorpion
from Oklahoma City, OK
The KitchenAid Wireless 7-Speed Hand Mixer is a gold standard for hand mixers. I should disclose that I received the mixer for purposes of producing an unbiased review. The following are my real thoughts after using the mixer over the last few days.
Weight:

The mixer has a great feel to it. Compared to a wired hand mixer we had been using before, this wireless mixer feels about the same. The addition of a battery did not increase the weight enough for me to notice.
Features:
Having seven speeds is a boost over many hand mixers. Whether you are whipping eggs or stirring thicker mixes, the range of speeds is a great benefit. In addition, KitchenAid have added a Soft Start feature to keep ingredients from spattering.

My favorite feature is just the ability to easily stand the mixer up after I am done mixing. The ability to stand the mixer also makes it easier for storage.
I cannot understate how nice it is to not have a cord get in the way while using the mixer. Being cords free is truly a freeing experience in the kitchen as I no longer worry about my proximity to an outlet.
Power:

I noticed no discernable power drop by having the device on a battery as opposed to using a power cord. It worked as well or better than our older hand mixer. KitchenAid claims the mixer will make up to 200 cookies or 4 batches. I cannot say how true those statements are, but I know that after making two batches of lemon cookies, our mixer still had plenty of battery left. My wife and I charged the device when we first got it and after we were done baking. Both times it was fully charged in less than an hour.
However, it is important to note that you cannot charge and use the mixer at the same time. If you plug in the power adapter, there is a physical block that will prevent you from turning on the mixer at all.
Cleaning:
The quick release button for the blades is easy to use. The blades wash easily in the dishwasher.
Conclusion:
The KitchenAid Wireless 7-Speed Hand Mixer is easy to recommend for personal use or as a gift. It works great.

A Satisfying All-In-One Experience
on July 9, 2020
Posted by: RedScorpion
from Oklahoma City, OK
Not strictly a tablet. Not only a laptop. The Surface Book 3 continues the Surface Book tradition of blending the two devices to provide an all-in-one solution for users seeking to create, play, and work in an ever-remote workspace. While the device is not without some quirks and questionable design decisions, it handled nearly every task I threw at it. It is currently my favorite portable Windows 10 device and I have absolutely no problem recommending it.
I should disclose that I am a member of the Best Buy Tech Insider Program. Reviewers in this invitation-only program are provided products for the purpose of writing honest, unbiased reviews. Please keep reading for a more detailed breakdown of my experience so far. While this review is longer than I would like, I hope it helps others with their purchase decisions.
Pros:
First thing to point out, the Surface Book 3 looks largely the same as the Surface Book 2. The clam shell design from previous iterations is still present. The screen operates in a 3:2 aspect ratio which looks great when typing or working in Photoshop. It can be a bit problematic with gaming (more on that in a bit), but the screen is generally beautiful with great colors, contrasts, and black levels. It is a consistently beautiful display.
The keyboard and touch pad are great. This is the best keyboard I have ever had on a laptop in terms of its responsiveness. The spring in each key just feels great. However, I really wish a number pad could have been worked into the design. If you work on a lot of spreadsheets, this may not be the most efficient keyboard or machine for you.
Gaming was much better than I expected. The Surface Book 3 runs on a newer Intel 10nm Ice Lake processor. The processor was not the fastest in my testing, but it gets the job done. When combined with the included NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti discreet graphics, I was amazed that the Surface played nearly every game I put in front of it. Doom Eternal ran at 60FPS for a good chunk of my testing when I played the game in 1080p at a 16X9 aspect ratio. Sea of Thieves looked and played great. On top of that, the Surface Book 3 15inch model comes with a built-in Xbox wireless controller adapter so you can easily sync your Xbox one wireless controller without the need to purchase a separate adapter. The strategy game, Warhammer: Total War 2 performed admirably enough, but this was the first game that showed me the limits of the Ice Lake CPU as performance could stutter a bit if enough units were on the battlefield. I ran some benchmarks and the device performed okay during various 3D Mark benchmarks. There are obviously faster gaming computers, but gaming performance on the Surface Book 3 exceeded my expectations. For the benchmark results, please see my photos.
While I enjoyed the gaming, working with creative software like Adobe Photoshop is where the Surface Book 3 truly excels. The 32GB of Ram meant I never had to worry about running out of memory while I worked with high res layers in my projects. That is great for a laptop. I have run out of memory many times on my other computers. Afterwards, I have to go in and resize assets or compress layers before I can proceed. In addition, the 3:2 aspect ratio was great for working on books and word documents.
The wireless adapter on the surface book 3 is 802.11ax compatible. With an up to date router, you can get some of the best Wi-Fi speeds currently available. If streaming or working remotely is important to you, I do not believe you can find a better device in terms of wireless connectivity.
Cons:
The battery life for the tablet is, quite frankly, not great. I got an hour and a half of web browsing and streaming before I needed to plug the tablet in. A digital artist wishing to work on the tablet from their couch, may need to be prepared to have their power cable nearby. Microsoft claims the computer should get 17.5 hours when connected to the base, my experience never bore that out. I did get more life than the tablet by itself and it has lasted much longer than I expected, but it was not anywhere close to 17.5 hours. On the subject of art, it’s not possible to bend the display back and have it lay perfectly flat against the base.
I wish there were more connectivity options for USB. There are only two USB-A ports and they are all on the left side of the keyboard. If you are right-handed and use a wired mouse, you will have the cable wrapping around the device. There is no HDMI port. If you want to view your work on a TV, you will need to either use a USB-C to HDMI cable, cast your display wirelessly, or invest in a docking station. In addition, there is no wired networking or display port. If you need more device connectivity, you may have no other choice but to invest in a docking station. Docking stations are not cheap. On the subject of accessories, the official stylus is also not included by default. I’ve seen much cheaper computers and tablets come with their stylus by default.
The power adapter is proprietary. It comes with a USB-A port built into the power brick which you can use to charge your phone, but because the adapter is proprietary, it could be an expensive replacement should it fail. And while you can charge the Surface Book via USB-C, the screen can only be charged by connecting it to the keyboard base or charging it with the included power adapter.
Headphone jack placement is awkward. It is located on the top right corner of the screen. That means you may find your headphone cable constantly interrupting your view. If you wrap the cable around the back of the Surface, you have even less headphone cable.
There is an 8.0MP camera on the back of the display. I don’t really see the purpose. Taking pictures like a tablet or a phone seems ridiculous to me.
Windows 10 ver. 2004 has been out since late May, but to-date, I have not yet been able to install the update on the Surface Book 3. The Surface is still waiting for the update. If you were hoping to have a device with the latest version of Windows installed by default, this is not it. Speaking of updates, get ready for a lot of online updates out of the box.
As mentioned above, the Surface Book 3 15” comes with a discreet NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti graphics when connected to the keyboard base. However, the driver updates must come from Microsoft. When I launch Doom Eternal, the game tells me my graphics drivers are out of date and that I should download the latest drivers. From my reading, you should not download NVIDIA drivers from the NVIDIA site as this device is proprietary and not using drivers from Microsoft could cause software problems. The draw back here is constantly worrying if I have the latest and most compatible drivers for games. Out of date drivers can lead to graphical and performance problems in games. While I didn’t encounter any problems in my play sessions, the drivers are definitely a concern.
Conclusion:
The Surface Book 3 is an impressive computer. It functions well as a tablet with full software as opposed to apps. When connected to the keyboard base, the Surface Book 3 produced admirable speeds for gaming. The display and 32GB of memory made the device great for working on digital art and photo editing projects. I found a few of the design decisions to be a bit baffling, but they did not interfere with my overall enjoyment of the product. I believe Microsoft achieved the goal of creating a truly all-in-one device that can meet the needs of most users. It isn’t always a perfect experience, but I am enjoying it.

Fast Wireless Charging for Apple and Samsung
on July 3, 2020
Posted by: RedScorpion
from Oklahoma City, OK
The Boost Charge Wireless charging station works great at providing a reliable, wireless charge. I should point out that I received this charger for purposes of an unbiased review.
In the box, you get the charging pad, a 4 foot USB-A to micro-USB cable, and a wall adapter.
Fast wireless charging is still not as fast as fast wired charging, but with speeds faster than standard wireless charging and the convenience of wireless charging, fast wireless chargers are becoming easier to recommend. On top of the convenience, you can also spare some wear and tear from your phone's wired charging port.
On my Samsung s10e, the phone charged much faster than on a standard qi charger. The Samsung phones will recognize the fast wireless charger and indicate fast wireless charging even while using a case for the phone.
There are rubber grips on top of the charging pad to keep your phone from sliding. In my experience, I had no problem getting the phone placed and charging.
Note, I did not appear to get fast wireless charging with the Google Pixel 4. If you own a Pixel 4 and want fast wireless charging, you may need to look at other options.
But for Samsung and Apple phones that support fast wireless charging, the Belkin Boost charging pad is a stylish and reliable fast charging option that I can easily recommend.

Your Next Gaming Monitor

The Dell Alienware AW2521HFL monitor is amazing. That's it. End of review. Pick it up now!
Okay, it isn't quite that simple, but thanks to its tremendous refresh rate, low response time, excellent build quality, and great on screen color reproduction, the Dell Alienware AW2521HFL monitor is the monitor to make all your gaming friends jealous. This is my favorite monitor. This monitor provides the speeds of a TN monitor with the color reproduction and viewing angles of an IPS display. It is the best of both. The higher refresh rates and Freesync technologies lead to smoother frame rates in FPS and strategy games while the improved color reproduction of the IPS display keeps everything looking great in the process.
Assembly: The monitor comes with two HDMI cables, a Display Port cable, and a USB cable to connect the built in USB hub. Important to make sure you plug the USB cable into a high speed USB port on the computer. Connecting the two base pieces to the monitor is simple. If you decide later that you want to wall mount the monitor to a VESA compatible wall mount, the base stand is easily detached via the alien head button on the back of the stand. Front cable management and an optional rear panel, help keep cables tidy. The stand does take up a decent footprint on the desk (in my experience about ten inches for depth), but the stability is great and everything just feels solid.
Setup: Windows will detect this as a pnp compatible monitor on start up. Drivers can be downloaded by googling DELL Alienware AW2521HFL. The included QR code in enclosed pamphlet did not work for me, but googling the product ID will take you to a DELL page where you can download Alienware Command Center and the display driver. You can use the Alienware Command Center to change the lighting profile for the back lighting on the monitor, or you can use the preset lighting options included with the monitor itself.
Make sure you go into your display adapter properties and set the monitor refresh rate to 240hz. By default, I found that the monitor was set on 59hz out of the box.
I tested the monitor on three different computers. Two with AMD freesync and another with an NVIDIA set up. The monitor looked and performed great with all the computers. In my experience, AMD Radeon Software detected and enabled Freesync and G-Sync by default.
Unfortunately, some light bleed was noticeable around the top of the screen in the model I tested and black reproduction wasn't quite as rich as monitors that featured HDR, but on the whole, the color reproduction still won me over. To notice any light bleed, the screen would have to be totally black and even then you have to really look for it. It's possible that this was just a variance among monitors and that it could be nearly eliminated with just some more tweaking. (For what it's worth, I prefer the initial preset and the gaming preset profiles on the monitor.)
This is a very good gaming monitor. Purists might quibble a bit with the slight light bleed / leak, but I'm in love with this monitor. It's truly the best gaming monitor I have ever had. I highly recommend it.

Great Smart Lock!

So, picture this: coming home from the grocery store, your arms full, and the front door just unlocks automatically as you approach. This is the best kind of tech innovation: a device I never knew I needed, but now I can't imagine living without. The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock is great and I'm recommending it to everyone.
Installation: Installation was a breeze. I had it installed in less than 30 minutes. The kit includes: the lock, a mounting plate, a cover plate, adapters to attach the lock to your existing set up, and adhesive tape. The August Home app guides you through the installation process. You secure the outside of your existing lock with the tape, and then, using the screws for your lock, replace the back twist with the August Smart Lock. August also includes an entry door sensor. The sensor can be installed on the outside of the door frame, or it can be installed inside the door provided you are okay with drilling a 5/8 hole into your door. Because I'm renting, I just used the external mounting option.
And that't it. Installation was a breeze. The included adapters work with a large variety of locks. Just make sure your lock operates as a deadbolt.
Features: As mentioned above, the lock can auto unlock as you approach. The lock senses when your phone is back on your home Wi-Fi and unlocks when you approach. You can set up the app to provide notifications for when the door has been left open or if someone unlocks the door manually.
It's easy to send guest keys to friends and family. I can see people who run AirBnB's using this lock and sending keys to guests.
Google integration is great. I have a Google Assistant in the car and it's nice being able to ask my Google Assistant what the status is of the front door lock or tell the Google Assistant to lock the door.
Security Measures: There's two step authentication built in to the app. Users have to pass phone and email checks. In addition, if you use Google or Alexa, you have to provide security codes to unlock the device. If you lose your phone, August has an online tool to report the device loss and disable virtual keys.
Conclusion: The lock works as I expected and I have really enjoyed it. I can't recommend it enough.

Hi, how is the sound quality for talking? Do the buttons hurt your ears when you push them in?

I didn't think they sounded that good and the person I called said I sounded very static-y.

JBL Flip 3 Speaker: Stream your favorite songs and Internet radio stations from your compatible audio device using this speaker, which offers extensive playback with the rechargeable battery. Dual external bass radiators offer booming low tones, and you can enjoy clear phone calls with the integrated speakerphone.

can it be connected to a ipod nano

Yes.

If your iPod Nano has blue-tooth (which the newer models do), then you can connect this to your Nano that way. If your Nano does not have blue-tooth, you can always connect the Flip 3 with an auxiliary 3.5mm audio cable.
