This release of American History X is a testament to the fact that New Line devotes most of its time and efforts to its "platinum series," and while that particular line of releases is among the best to be found, it's an unfortunate side effect that other deserving films such as this one get neglected in the process. Subject matter so volatile and controversial could easily justify an entire second disc's worth of bonus material, yet the only supplements present here are a few deleted scenes (only one of which is truly worthwhile), the theatrical trailer, and cast and crew biographies. What is lacking in the extras department, however, is made up for in the quality of the video presentation. This is the widescreen version of the film, presented in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1, and although it hasn't been enhanced anamorphically, it's a beautiful transfer nevertheless. Interestingly, the film is shot on both black-and-white and color film stock, which is difficult to balance properly under any circumstances, but here the two styles are mixed perfectly: the colors are bright, vibrant, and sharply defined, while the black-and-white sections are beautifully shot, with deep, dark, grainless blacks. The quality does justice to the cinematography of Tony Kaye, who also directs. The disc's audio presentation isn't overwhelming due to the generally subdued tone of the film, but the digital 5.1 mix is very nicely balanced, making good use of the center channel to cleanly convey the dialogue while relegating the ambient sounds to the rear channels. Overall, this is another instance where a special edition release is probable at some point in the future, but until that time comes, this disc is a more than adequate presentation of an important, powerful film.

my favorite edward norton flick

this is a great movie. great actors and great story. its touching. it focuses and racism and racist groups such as white supremacy groups and the problems and death that arise from the violence due to the racism. edward norton plays an astounding white supremacy leader and does a very good job and is such a loving character. it is a sad movie in the end but it is a 'lesson learned' movie. so good a must see. instant cult classic.

Previously released on DVD as a no-frills disc, Columbia TriStar Home Video has thankfully re-released Kevin Smith's controversial satirical religious fantasy, Dogma, as a two-disc special edition. The DVD is thoroughly excellent and a prime example of what the format is really capable of. Disc one contains the digitally mastered film in its original theatrical ratio of 2.35:1 (Smith's first film in scope), anamorphically enhanced for widescreen TVs. The picture is superb and seems identical to the transfer on the no-frills release. The film, which has been given an expansive 5.1 Dolby Digital boost, also seems identical to the previous disc's audio. The film's audio is also available in English, French, and Spanish two-channel Dolby Surround. The audio and visual quality of this disc is worth the price alone, but fortunately there is a lot more included, namely two commentary tracks. The first track is the more breezy, loose, and damn well funny, with Smith and stars Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Jason Mewes, producer Scott Mosier, and View Askew partner-in-crime Vincent Pereira all delivering the goods. The track is hilarious, though it is also filled with some interesting production anecdotes and more. The track is also equipped with a great little addition called "Follow the Buddy Christ." By clicking on the said option in the "Special Features" menu, a blinking image of Buddy Christ will occasionally appear in the lower right corner of the screen. Hit enter on your remote control and two small screens will appear at the bottom of the screen showing Smith and crew relentlessly chain-smoking while recording the commentary track. A fun little option. The disc's second commentary track includes Smith, Mosier, and Pereira giving a more production-detailed history of the trouble-plagued shoot, sans the Buddy option. Though it lacks the former track's anarchic feel, the second one is even better, as it chronicles the frustration of making the ambitious, yet still low-budget film. It must also be noted that, though both tracks are filled with sometimes brutally frank comments, some of the names have been bleeped to protect the not-so-innocent. But for all of disc one's digital treats, the real fun kicks in with disc two. Containing a plethora of visual goodies, including 100 minutes of deleted footage (the quality of which has been intentionally downgraded) with intros by Smith and Pereira, cast and crew outtakes and bloopers, storyboards to three major scenes, talent files, theatrical trailer, and a link to the View Askew website, the extras easily make this a must-have disc. The DVD also contains some rather funny animated menus and even better hidden extras. By going to the last page in the "Scene Selections" on disc one, viewers can hit the number 3 key on their remote controls twice and get a little surprise; on disc two, they can go to the last page in "Deleted Scenes" and press the number 2 and 4 keys on the remote; another little surprise awaits.

this is another great movie by kevin smith. he loves to be on the end arguing religions and this is the movie to argue one of the best religions yet. they do very well. great acting, great characters. a kind of unusual plot. if you are sensitive to religion may not be for you. its a satirical and funny look at religion from all sides.

best future film
on February 3, 2008

makes you think twice about what we are becoming as far as a race. its a very satirical comedy where a 'genius' finds himself in the future after an army experiment and everyone has very very low iq's. the things the person goes through makes you laugh at him and at how stupid the rest of the characters are in the movie. it seems like a low budget film and the acting is not top notch but it is still a movie to see.

One of the most influential and popular films of the 1990's finally gets the DVD treatment it deserves on this fantastic two-disc set from Miramax. Video and audio quality are both stellar: the new anamorphically-enhanced widescreen transfer shows off the cinematography in all its colorful, kitschy glory and the stereo soundtracks (DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1) dish up a punchy, crystal-clear soundtrack that is guaranteed to give the stereo speakers a workout. Pulp Fiction also offers a staggering array of extras guaranteed to keep film fans occupied for hours on end. First up is a subtitle trivia track that replaces the usual commentary track. Some fans might be disappointed that they don't get to hear Tarantino's enthusiastic musings in audio form but this exhaustive trivia track makes up for this by supplying every bit of minutiae that a fan could want to know: it covers everything from the film's inspirations to on-the-set stories to explanations of the many symbols and references used in the film. There is also a fantastic new documentary that uses interviews old and new and a variety of background footage to create a slickly-edited and fast-paced portrait of the history and influence of Pulp Fiction. Fans will be pleased by the inclusion of deleted scenes that are set up with on-screen intros from Tarantino, video clips of Tarantino directing a pair of the film's scenes and the inclusion of the infamous Palme D'Or acceptance speech that features the director having to fend off a zealous heckler as he makes his remarks. Elsewhere, this special edition represents the critical response to Pulp Fiction with an episode of Siskel and Ebert devoted to the Tarantino phenomenon and a gallery of text articles that analyze the film. The package is rounded out with a great episode of the Charlie Rose Show that features Rose interviewing Tarantino at length, a production design featurette and a barrage of trailers and publicity material. In short, Miramax's special edition of Pulp Fiction is both the definitive edition of this film and a thorough primer on its enduring influence on the world of filmmaking.

tihs is the best film i think that is a cult classic. great characters make you love them even though they are slaying people. they are tough and humble and very cool guys. this movie definitly not intended for children. Tarantino is a great director and screen writer (he also is in a few scenes) and does a very good job with this movie. a very satirical funny moving and dramatic film

great movie

this movie was just fantastic. the storyline was great, the plot was awesome, the characters were people you could connect with. this is a movie that will make people hate certain governments and be able to understand wh some are no good. you actually start rooting for a terrorist and hope that he succeeds. it gives you the chills, the end scence is the best by far. so many people and extras. a political movie of our time depicting the flaws of failed government. a must see.

Darren Aronofsky's harrowing tale of drug addiction, Requiem for a Dream comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. Supplemental materials include a commentary track featuring the director, a second commentary track by the cinematographer Matthew Libatique, deleted scenes with director commentary, a making-of featurette, production notes, theatrical trailers, television promos, and Ellen Burstyn interviewing Hubert Selby Jr., who co-wrote the screenplay that was adapted from his novel. This is a superb disc for both the film's many fans and DVD collectors.

Best Drug Movie
on February 3, 2008

this is the best movie i have seen that depicted the drug using and selling culture the best. great actors, plot, and characters. it was a very realistic portrayal of the lives of people just like this. everyone has a dream and these people had dreams of fame and drug use, usually used to get to the fame or the riches. it will make you think twice about drug use but also make you root for the drug abusers in the movie. very touching and a very well done movie.

Most touching movie
on February 3, 2008

this is the most touching movie that i have ever seen. its all about how people from different walks of life 'crash' into each other every day and what happens when their views, cultures, and beliefs clash and what happens as a society. it is very touching. you will laugh, cry, and be moved. very good acting and very good story line and characters. this is a recommended movie in many of my cultural college classes.
