Disney DVD gives their sprawling swashbuckler a feature-packed release that is sure to give both your DVD player and PC a workout. Presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio, the film transfer is nothing short of perfection. While some may doubt the ability of such a large-scale film to transfer suitably to television, the sharp image and beautiful colors do so with ease and grace. From the creepy moonlit scenes to the sparkling treasure cave, the colors are bright, vivid, and spectacular. With sound options that include THX-optimized DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, Disney DVD has offered viewers a vivid soundscape that perfectly compliments the visual presentation. The DTS soundtrack, in particular, will have viewers ducking under their coffee tables to avoid cannon fire. It seems only once or twice a year that a DVD comes along that truly redefines what can be accomplished on the format, and this is no doubt one of those discs. This release of Pirates of the Caribbean is virtually overflowing with great extra features, and viewers may need a free weekend just to navigate their way through its wealth of materials. Starting off with three separate commentary tracks, viewers will likely want to start with director Gore Verbinski and star Johnny Depp's amusing and informative recollection of the film's production. Though it may not be the most technical commentary, the two play well off of one another, and the result in an interesting and informative track. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer provides a bit more detailed take on the production, and stars Keira Knightley and Jack Davenport check in with what is definitely the most amusing commentary track. It's obvious that the two stars are comfortable with each other, and hearing them joke around as they recall the exhausting shoot is a blast. Writers Ted Elliot, Terry Rossio, Stuart Beattie, and Jay Wolpert's commentary provides notable insight on how the screenplay changed from draft to draft (and script to screen), though one gets the impression that they're stepping on each other's toes a bit to get a word in, and the result is a bit crowded. "An Epic at Sea: The Making of Pirates of the Caribbean" checks in at about 40 minutes and covers everything from location scouting to the spectacular Disneyland premiere of the film. "Fly on the Set" takes a look at both the director in action and how the filmmakers managed their many cinematic feats and sleights of hand. If one wishes to explore the life of actual pirates they need look no further than the "Below Deck" feature, which actually takes viewers aboard a pirate ship to explore the true-life tales of history's most notorious seafaring scallywags. From Blackbeard to Sir Francis Drake to women pirates and Chinese pirates, this informative feature utilizes interviews with maritime historian David Cordingly and film clips and is one of the most fascinating and insightful features on the disc. The accompanying feature, "A Prisoner's Last Tale," also speaks with Cordingly to provide detailed insight on the day-to-day life of a pirate. "Diary of a Pirate" consists of a "Producer's Photo Diary" (which is also narrated by Bruckheimer), a video journal by star Lee Arenberg and a detailed study of the brig Lady Washington (which served as The Interceptor in the film). Deleted scenes mostly offer a more intimate look at the characters, and a blooper reel collects some of the most amusing on-camera flubs. After viewers take a detailed look at one of the film's most entertainingly frightful scenes in "Moonlight Serenade," an image gallery offers production sketches, storyboards, and production and publicity photos. The vintage promotional short "Pirates in the Park" takes them on a nostalgic ride through the actual Disneyland attraction. If viewers aren't entirely exhausted by this point, the DVD-ROM features are sure to do them in. From an effects studio to a virtual reality viewer and storyboard viewer, these intense interactive features will truly put your home PC to the test (the DVD-ROM features will not work on Macintosh computers). From the serious film student to the curious youngster, this release has something for everyone. A must-have for DVD fanatics and fans of the film alike.

Specially included with the Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith soundtrack, this collection of music videos highlights sixteen of John Williams' strongest pieces from the film series while setting them to footage from all six films. Glimpses of production drawings and paintings can also be found throughout the 70-minute special as well, some of which had yet to be released in any other format. Taken as a whole, the special not only meant to present the composer's breadth of work, but to reinforce the lyrical themes that had been built up musically, visually and dramatically throughout the saga.

Best Bond Music U Can Get!
on February 17, 2008
Posted by: indiana1994

This is the best Bond music you can get! It has every title theme from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough. It has the most popular ones, like "Nobody Does It Better" by Carly Simon, "A View To A Kill" by Duran Duran, and "Live and Let Die" by Paul McCartney/Wings. It also has classics like "From Russia With Love" by Matt Monro and "You Only Live Twice" by Nancy Sinatra. It has the not so-famous ones that are great like "Moonraker" by Shirley Bassey and "The Man With The Golden Gun" by LuLu. It also has a few instrumentals. Overall, the best collection of music EVER!!

Jerry Maguire, like most Tom Cruise movies, has a wealth of fans who can't get enough of its charms. This Deluxe Widescreen Edition DVD, while visually striking and technically above average, seems to have been rushed to market. There is no original menu artwork, just a cropped image of the promotional poster and generic buttons for language, subtitles, and chapter choices. Outside of the 1.85:1 widescreen transfer and the Dolby Digital Sound, there is certainly nothing here to justify calling the DVD a Deluxe Edition. There's no director or cast commentary track, production notes, theatrical trailer, or even cast and crew information. Since the DVD is broken into 63 chapters, the chapter selection menu would seem vital to any user attempting to find a place or a favorite scene in the movie. Sadly, the captions for the scenes are rather obscure, and there are no still images to provide additional help. The additional language tracks for the movie are French and Spanish; Spanish subtitles can also be selected. A movie as popular as Jerry Maguire and one that's admired by such a large audience deserves a better DVD release than this lackluster edition.

This Movie Had Me At Hello!
on February 16, 2008

This movie had me at hello! It has Tom Cruise (most important), Renee Zellweger, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Regina King, and Kelly Preston. It is a hilarious movie and was an instant classic. However, it severely needs Special Features. Still, you gotta buy this movie. In other words, show Best Buy the money!
What's great about it: All-Star Cast, Hilarious, Instant Classic
What's not so great: Needs Special Features

It can't be denied that MGM knows how to put out a special edition, and the Bond series is no exception. Die Another Day, the most recent in this 40-year run, is a two-disc set (the first for a Bond film) that rivals any. The movie, which is on the first disc, is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and is gorgeous. A cropped pan-and-scan version is available separately. Colors are nearly perfect and detail is constantly strong. The fast action never breaks down the digital transfer, and blacks are dense and solid. This is truly an accurate reproduction of the theatrical print. Not to be outdone by the visual aspects is the audio. Both Dolby Digital EX and DTS ES tracks are included, and they really pack a punch. Surrounds are used extensively, creating a true theatrical and environmental experience. Deep bass also shines through, especially during the opening scenes. If that weren't good enough, this disc also has two scene-specific commentaries, one with director Lee Tamahori and producer Michael G. Wilson and the other with actors Pierce Brosnan and Rosamund Pike. Each is good in its own way, though the cast commentary is filled with gaps. Making this disc even better is a subtitled "fact track" that also has a number of brief segments highlighting different aspects of the film. The plus is that the film isn't interrupted, but just placed in a smaller window. The remainder of the extensive supplements are housed on the second disc. The highlight is an 80-minute documentary, which is broken up into eight parts. Everything is covered, from location to visual effects to post-production. The next section, "Mission Deconstruction," goes further into the making of the film with shorter featurettes on the title design and shot breakdowns with multiple-camera angles. Less interesting is "Equipment Briefing," in which John Cleese gives an in-depth examination for some of James Bond's secret weapons; it doesn't amount to much, however. Better is the "Image Database" with an extensive selection of production, publicity, and behind-the-scenes photographs. Finally, along with some DVD-ROM content, is the "Ministry of Propaganda" section, including just about everything else, from a number of theatrical and television spots to the title-song music video from Madonna (in addition to a making-of featurette) to a video-game preview. Quantity and quality go hand in hand with this DVD release, though that's far from a surprise with this much loved series.

Another Great Pierce Brosnan Bond Film
on February 13, 2008

This may not be the best Bond film, but it is still a good one. It has two of the best Bond girls, Halle Berry and Rosamund Pike as Jinx and Miranda Frost. Unfortunately, the original Q has been replaced by John Cleese, but John Cleese is still a good actor. You have to get this!
What's great about it: Halle Berry and Rosamund Pike
What's not so great: No more Q!!

Worst Bond Ever
on February 13, 2008
Posted by: indiana1994
from Orlando, FL
This is Pierce Brosnan's worst Bond film, and probably the worst of the series. It has a horrible villain and horrible Bond Girl (although Sophie Marceau is a great actress), and it has a new Moneypenny, who ruined the characters reputation. However, tis film still has some good to it. It has Judi Dench and Desmond Llewelyn in the MI6 roles, and also has Denise Richards as a great Bond girl. It may be the worst Bond movie, but it is still a need-to-buy movie.
What's great about it: Desmond Llewelyn, Denise Richards, Judi Dench
What's not so great: Horrible Villain and Bond Girl, New Moneypenny

James Bond, Meet Pierce Brosnan
on February 13, 2008

Pierce Brosnan's first Bond film is probably his second best. It co-stars Sean Bean as one of the best villains of all time. However, the henchwoman, played by Famke Janssen, is horrible! It is still a great movie, though.
What's great about it: Sean Bean is the Villain
What's not so great: Famke Janssen

Timothy Dalton's Best

Timothy Daltons second Bond film is definitely the better, and one of the best in the series. It has a great villain (Robert Davi), and best of all, it has more of Felix Leiter than any other Bond film. A true Bond classic!!!!!
What's great about it: Timothy Dalton, Robert Davi, More Felix Leiter
