Classic romantic comedy
on February 23, 2008
Posted by: Nicky285
This is a wonderful romantic comedy, with a great performances and a great soundtrack from Harry Connick Jr. It has a Woody Allen feel in its idealized view of New York and at the time it came out felt a little like a Woody Allen rip off. But this movie has stood the test of time.
What's great about it: Funny and charming
What's not so great: None

The musical classic Singin' in the Rain is given the two-disc "special edition" treatment by Warner Bros. The film is presented in its original 1.33:1 full-frame aspect ratio and looks striking. With solid black levels and bold colors, this reproduction of the film sports nary an inch of imperfection in the image. Fans will be delighted to get their hands on this great-looking transfer of the film. The soundtrack is presented in a newly remixed Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound mix in English, as well as the original Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono mix in English and French. The newly created 5.1 mix utilizes the rear speakers often, especially when one of the popular songs kicks in. Overall, this is an excellent-sounding mix that should take any home theater system back to the days of Gene Kelly dancing around a light post. Also included on this disc are English, French, and Spanish subtitles. To celebrate the film's 50th anniversary, Warner has included a generous number of extra features, starting with an audio commentary by co-director Stanley Donen, screenwriters Betty Comden and Adolph Green, stars Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds, and Cyd Charisse, historian Rudy Behlmer, and director Baz Luhrmann. This is a great commentary track that is filled with stories, anecdotes, and historical information about the film, its stars, and the film's origins. Next up are two documentaries: "What a Glorious Feeling" and "Musicals: The Arthur Freed Unit at MGM." Each of these featurettes sports a bevy of interviews with stars and filmmakers both past and present. Fans wanting to delve into the golden age of Hollywood musicals won't want to miss either of these insightful and entertaining documentaries. Twelve movie excerpts from the Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown collaboration are included and provide some extra added zing to the already exciting movie music. Finally, there is a four-minute outtake from the film for the song "You Are My Lucky Star," Scoring Stage Sessions with 18 early recorded versions of various songs, a still gallery, a theatrical trailer, some production notes, and a cast and crew/awards list.

One of the greatest movies of all time
on February 21, 2008

This is one of the great movies of all time, and probably the best musical movie ever made. Many of the individual dance numbers ("Singin in the Rain," "Make 'em Laugh," "Moses Supposes...") are perfect gems. But unlike a lot of other movie musicals with great musical numbers, this one also has a great story. It's funny, it's charming, what more can I say. This is a great movie.
What's great about it: Great singing, dancing, performances and funny
What's not so great: none

Woody Allen's greatest popular and critical success gets a by-the-numbers DVD release from MGM. Excluding the film's theatrical trailer, there aren't any extras to speak of, but at least Annie Hall has been intelligently divided into digital chapters for easy access to favorite scenes. Considering editor Ralph Rosenblum's vivid cutting on Annie Hall, this must have taken some thought and care. While Annie Hall was one of MGM's earlier DVD releases, the lack of extras is most probably due to Allen's reluctance to revisit any of his movies; the eccentric filmmaker is famous for never watching his own movies once he is finished with them and claims that he has no special fondness for Annie Hall even though it swept the 1977 Academy Awards. The DVD features the movie in its original widescreen aspect ratio but it hasn't been converted to the superior anamorphic format, which can improve the picture quality by roughly 33 percent. While Gordon Willis' justly acclaimed cinematography still looks beautiful here, this oversight is strange considering that other Allen titles such as Manhattan come in anamorphic widescreen. The audio transfer conforms to the original sound of the picture and has been transferred to Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono. While this isn't the definitive DVD release of this brilliant and trend-setting romantic comedy it is still preferable to the video version.

One of the greatest movies of all time
on February 19, 2008

This is, quite simply, one of the greatest American movies ever made. The fact that it's a comedy and that its creator has gone on to make some bad movies and bad decisions in his personal life, should not detract from the brilliance of the writing and directing and cinematography of this film. A very wise film about relationships and a very good snapshot of a time in the cultural history of our country.
What's great about it: See above
What's not so great: Have to try not to think about Woody's personal life or recent films while watching this

A wonderful little film
on February 18, 2008

This is a charmingly told story of two people who find each other and form a real connection over music. The music is wonderful, and the way the story lays out feels very real -- no Hollywood, phony ending here. What keeps it from being a great film, is that it never goes very deep. The exploration of the characters and their relationship always stays pretty close to the surface.
What's great about it: Charming story and great music
What's not so great: a little slow in parts

Mike Nichols' award-winning adaptation of Patrick Marber's emotionally lacerating play Closer arrives on DVD in the Superbit format. This type of disc maximizes the amount of memory used to recreate the film's image and sound at the expense of many extras. The 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen image is state-of-the-art, and the English 5.1 Dolby Digital Soundtrack (as well as the English DTS soundtrack and the French Dolby Surround soundtrack) boasts excellent fidelity even though this talk-heavy film does not exactly require the most extensive use of the sound field. The only extra worthwhile extra is the music video for Damien Rice's "The Blower's Daughter," a song that Nichols uses to great effect in Closer's opening and closing moments. This disc is fine, but it does leave room for a special edition sometime in the future.

One of the year's Best Movies
on February 17, 2008

I thought this was a vastly underrated movie and one of the best of that year. The characters are all jerks, and it's hardly a feel good movie, yet I left the theatre exhilirated due to the brilliance of what I had just witnessed. From the hauntingly beautiful Damien Rice song "The Blower's Daughter" that serves as the theme, to the clever and witty writing and the very sharp acting and directing, I thought this was a tour de force. It is a dark film, and may not be for everyone, but I loved it.
What's great about it: Brilliantly written and acted film
What's not so great: Dark tone and unsympathetic characters may not be for everyone

Package Description: So you think you know the story of Little Red Riding Hood. Don't be too sure... One of your favorite fairy tales is turned upside-down and inside-out in what the LA Times called "high-energy, imaginative entertainment." With irreverent storytelling, spunk and wit, Hoodwinked delivers a comedy caper for the young, the young at heart and everyone in between. When the police arrive at Granny's cottage in the woods to answer a domestic disturbance call, it looks like just another open-and-shut case. But Red, Granny, the Big Bad Wolf and the Woodsman are not your usual suspects, as they have their own dark secrets, wily deceptions and conflicting accounts of the crime. Together, they must put aside their differences and find their own original twist on Happily Ever After in their "raucous, genre-busting, animated gem (Entertainment Weekly, The Must List)."

Fun Kids Movie
on February 16, 2008

While this isn't as clever or smart as a Pixar movie, it is a lot of fun. My 8year old loves it -- it's one of his favorite movies -- and it's got enough wit and humor so it's not too hard for me to sit through either. Definitely underrated and one of the better animated movies of recent years.
What's great about it: Great Movie for Kids
What's not so great: Not as smart as Pixar

Great for Kids
on February 11, 2008
Posted by: Nicky285
My eight year old really had fun playing this for a while. The party games has dozens of options -- they can play for hours and still not have tried them all, so for days there was always something new for them to try. My kids did complain that the story mode didn't have much of a story like in previous versions of the game. But they still enjoyed it. So if you're looking for a fun family game that isn't sports and isn't violent, this is a pretty good choice.
What's great about it: Lots of different games, non-violent
What's not so great: My kids were disappointed in the story mode

Great Product

This GPS basically does what we need it to. We input the address and it tells us how to get there. No complaints, no problems so far. We have only used it in our home town so far, but bought the small one so we could also travel with it. Since it is a travel size, it would be nice if it came with a case.
What's great about it: Easy to use, small size great for travel
What's not so great: Smaller screen also means less to see, no case
