Often viewed as a RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK rip-off (tho it was initially pitched to the network a year or so before RAIDERS came out) TALES OF THE GOLD MONKEY is an adventure series in the classic pulp tradition. Set on a remote Pacific island chain in 1936, it features a square-jawed hero, his loyal sidekick, a spunky female spy, a sexy Japanese princess, German soldiers, samurai, pirates, exotic locales, priceless treasures, bar fights, jungles, volcanoes....everything you need for a rousing adventure in the two-fisted, old school style.
I loved this show when it was on originally and am happy to say I still love it. Maybe the period setting has allowed the series to age gracefully or maybe it's just that good. Either way, having a quality legal set is something I really hadn't figured would ever happen and I'm so glad it did.
If I absolutely have to list any negatives about the set I'll bring up two things:
One, it's a shame they didn't put this out just a few years earlier and at least have been able to include Jeff "Corky" Mackay, who passed away in 2008, in the 'making of' extras. (The series also co-starred the great and sorely missed Roddy Mcdowall who passed away in 1998.)
And two, series is a direct port of the UK DVD set. This has resulted in a very slight speed-up in the episodes due to the PAL to NTSC conversion. Depending on how long it's been since you've watched the show, you might not even notice. Certainly in my case I got used to it after a few episodes and it didn't detract from my enjoyment.
What's great about it: Finally having the whole series on DVD.
What's not so great: There's a slight speed-up to the episodes resulting from the PAL to NTSC conversion.
I would recommend this to a friend!
