Yummy 70's Sleaze
on April 14, 2013

Honestly, unless you're a big fan of 70's exploitation or grew up during that era. you probably won't find Toolbox Murders very entertaining. It's a little slow, even by 70's standards and with the exception of some early carnage, not very gory. Fans of modern horror will definitely prefer the remake, which unfortunately hasn't found it's way to Blu-ray yet. Still, as a fan of old-school horror. I appreciate the original. Blue Underground gave us some great blu-ray titles, but Toolbox Murders is not their strongest effort. If you like sleazy slashers, pass on this one and pick up Fulci's "New York Ripper". The quality is far better and the film itself is much better.

Stallone & Snipes Deliver!
on April 13, 2013

Demolition Man is not only a great Stallone flick that features Wesley Snipes, it's probably the only movie that I can tolerate Sandra Bullock in. She actually does well at playing a cute and naive sexpot. Stallone is actually very funny in this one. The blu-ray looks great, btw. Pick this one up next time Best Buy offers it up dirt cheap.

More Polished, but Same Formula!

UnSun stepped up production a bit on this release, but the same writing and arrangement formulas remain. There are some great standout tracks on this release, but it's a complete package that is very consistent. I highly recommend this disc!

Maiden Rocks the Globe!
on April 13, 2013

A couple of things that interested me as a guitar player and lifelong Maiden fan.... First, although I do consider him a good songwriter, I am not a fan of the guitar playing or stage antics of Janick Gers. Worse, it seems Dave Murray and Adrian Smith have an appreciation of him (Murray even seems to mimic him at times). That being said, Maiden didn't get lazy in this arrangement, and to their merit, actually took advantage of having a third guitarist by adding 3 part harmonies to many of the rhythms and solos in concert. The audio really shines in this blu-ray release and the 3 part harmonies I mentioned really come through nicely. the setlist is very good and since I didn't notice it anywhere on this site, I thought I'd add it for anyone interested. Here it is... ACES HIGH (Bandra Kurla Cmplex/Mumbai, India February 1, 2008), 2 MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT (Rod Laver Arena/Melbourne, Australia February 7, 2008), REVELATIONS (Acer Arena/Sydney, Australia February 9, 2008), THE TROOPER (Makuhari Messe/Tokyo, Japan February 16, 2008), WASTED YEARS (Arena Monterrey/Monterrey, Mexico February 22, 2008), THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST (The Forum/Los Angeles, USA February 19, 2008), CAN I PLAY WITH MADNESS (Foro Sol/Mexico City, Mexico February 24, 2008), RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER (Izod Center/New Jersey, USA March 14, 2008), POWERSLAVE (Saprissa Stadium/San Jose, Costa Rica February 26, 2008), HEAVEN CAN WAIT (Palmeiras Stadium/Sao Paulo, Brazil March 2, 2008), RUN TO THE HILLS (Simon Bolivar Park/Bogota, Colombia February 28, 2008), FEAR OF THE DARK (Ferrocarril Oeste Stadium/Buenos Aires, Argentina March 7, 2008), IRON MAIDEN (Pista Atletica/Santiago, Chile March 9, 2008), MOONCHILD (Coliseo de Puerto Rico/San Juan, Puerto Rico March 12, 2008), THE CLAIRVOYANT (Pedreira Paulo Leminski/Curitiba, Brazil March 4, 2008), HALLOWED BE THY NAME (Air Canada Centre/Toronto, Canada March 16, 2008).

More Moore, More Maud
on April 13, 2013
Posted by: KneelBeforeZod

Moore is back (almost left the series prior to this one) and so is Maud (Man With the Golden Gun). Both definitely aged a lot between those two roles. "Octopussy" isn't my favorite of the Moore era, but it's still a worthy film. I find it to be a little more corny than campy like previous Moore Bonds, but the gadgets were very cool in this one. The blu-ray picture and audio quality are excellent, but the best thing about this release IMO, are the extras. In addition to the usual plethora of features found on most Bond releases, "Octopussy" includes the James Brolin screentests that were shot when Roger Moore originally planned to bail on Bond. Oddly enough, Brolin's Bond was American and made no attempt to speak with a British accent. It's a very cool extra.

What's great about it: Not my favorite Bond, but a solid release with lots of extras.

Quality Retro-Horror Flick!
on April 13, 2013
Posted by: KneelBeforeZod

Fans of 70's/80's horror will appreciate House of the Devil, not because it forces a retro vibe on you a la Rob Zombie, but because it manages to do so without being obvious. You could probably trick the average Hollywood movie goer into thinking this is an older movie. Don't get me wrong, it's not a great movie, but it is very very good. IMO, much better than Ti West's "Innkeepers", which everyone seems to like and I hate. I prefer the look of film, grain and all, as opposed to something that looks like it was shot on a camcorder. HOTD definitely captures that "film" look of the past. Despite the dated look, the Blu-ray looks great. It is light on extras if that's important to you.
My Best Buy number: 561959175
What's great about it: A refreshing break from modern horror

Roger Moore & Jaws Bring the Camp!
on April 13, 2013

I'll admit it.... Roger Moore is my favorite Bond. What can I say? I like the campiness over the seriousness of say, Sean Connery or the "realness" of Daniel Craig. That's not to say that I dislike either of them or those films, but I grew up with the late 70's/80's Bond and despite my young age (at the time), I managed to see most of the Roger Moore 007's in the theater., Perhaps it's just nostalgia, but it just seems right. I find myself watching these films "Moore" than any others in the 007 universe. That being said, The Spy Who Loved Me was one of my favorites (along with Man With the Golden Gun) and I absolutely adore Barbara Bach, both then and now.. And what can I say about Jaws? He freakin' rules! I remember how pumped I was to see him back in Moonraker. Anyway, pick this one up! The quality of the Blu-ray is great and it's got some cool extras.

The Royal Tenenbaums, featuring one of the most eccentric dysfunctional families ever put to film, comes to DVD, produced by Criterion. Typical for the two-disc sets they release, it's creative and well organized. Hardly unusual for their special edition, this set is loaded with supplemental features. The first disc, along with the movie, has a commentary track from director Wes Anderson, who covers just about everything that could be imagined. The second disc houses the rest, with a featurette on the portraits created for the film, interviews with the cast, outtakes, an extensive photo gallery, storyboards, theatrical trailers, and more. The navigation, look, and atmosphere of these extras is similar to Criterion's other DVD release of Anderson's Rushmore. As for the image, it's presented in 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen, and while it does look a little soft at times, detail and color are still quite strong, as well are the black levels. Knowing Anderson's visual style, the way the video image looks is related to the way he makes films and less to mediocre authoring. The sound, which includes 5.1 tracks in Dolby Digital and DTS, is completely adequate for this type of film. It's centered up front, with good volume, but doesn't take advantage of the Surround speakers. Dialogue is clear, which for this film is of the utmost importance. English subtitles are also offered. You would be hard-pressed to find a bad Criterion special edition, and certainly won't find it with this title.

A Touching Dramedy Gets the Criterion Treatment!
on April 13, 2013

from NYC
I picked up the Blu-ray during one of those rare occasions where Best Buy actually included a new Criterion release in a weekly circular. I haven't seen another since, but they did have since had a great Criterion sale, so there is hope. The blu-ray itself looks and sounds like a Criterion should, though at first glance, I found the contrast of colors slightly high. I realize this is how the film was originally presented and it's not a distraction or anything, but it seemed a little "strong" at times. This is my favorite Wes Anderson film and I'm very pleased to have it in my collection. Best Buy gave us a great price and was quick to ship with no minimums like 'zon other companies. :)
My Best Buy number: 561959175
What's great about it: Criterion Quality + Wes Anderson = No Brainer
What's not so great: Criterion's price tag (if you don't buy it during a sale)

A True Effort...No More Parody!
on April 13, 2013

I've been a KISS fan since 1976 and have seen every tour from Dynasty to now, so it is with some regret that I say, they should really take off the make-up (again) at this point. "Monster" is a solid release that legitimizes the current line-up and distances itself from what they were trying to accomplish with "Sonic Boom". The band finally found "their" (this incarnation) sound on this disc, like they did in days past, as opposed to trying to mimic the glory days. On "Sonic Boom", they tried too hard, especially Tommy, who was nothing more than an Ace clone who approached the material from the perspective of a member of a tribute band (which he was in) rather than a member of the actual band he was mimicking. Maybe it was Gene & Paul's doing, who knows? The music was reaching a point where it was almost second fiddle to the persona. Regardless, Tommy and Eric deserve their own identities and musically, I think they're earned it on "Monster". I recommend this album to any rock fan, not just us KISS fans who buy anything regardless.
My Best Buy number: 561959175
What's great about it: A KISS album that reflects the current line-up, not an immitation!
What's not so great: Take off the make-up, guys!

Charles Laughton's Magnum Opus!
on April 13, 2013
Posted by: KneelBeforeZod
from NYC
It's unfortunate that Night of the Hunter wasn't well received when it was originally released or we may have gotten more from (actor) director, Charles Laughton. This southern Gothic thriller revolves around a bank robber, his family and the serial killer cellmate (Robert Mitchum) he meets in prison who masquerades as a preacher. I won't divulge any more than that for those reading who haven't seen this gem, but I'd feel remiss if I didn't mention the chills I get every time I watch the underwater scene with Shelley Winters. This tale has a creepy atmosphere that will appeal to horror fans and film-noir fans alike. A must for any true lover of classic films. The blu-ray itself looks amazing for a flick that's nearly 60 years old. Criterion rarely fails and really exceeded expectations on this one. In case you're wondering why this one is expensive (even by Criterion standards), it's a 2-disc set (both discs are blu-rays) with disc-2 containing an amazing film in it's own right, titled: Charles Laughton Directs "The Night of the Hunter" which clocks in at a hefty 2.5 hours and explores both the film and Laughton. I was lucky enough to snag this one, along with others, during Best Buy's Criterion sale. A word of advice... the packaging on this release is somewhat fragile (digipack), so you may want to pick this one up in store (or site to store) rather than risk potential damage during shipping.

What's great about it: Amazing package for this Southern Gothic Masterpiece
What's not so great: Criterion's price tag
