Absolutely Impressed

I have had my eye on the Surface Book 3, since even before it was announced. I have been using a Surface Pro 3 for years now, and while I love the portability and power it provided, it was needing something capable of a bit more heavy lifting. Especially since the current state of the world means I'll be working from home even more frequently. I love taking notes on the Surface Pro 3, so I wanted to be able to continue to do so on a whatever new machine I upgraded to. That's why the Surface Book 3 was so appealing to me. It combines the touchscreen and pen input capabilities with a very capable GTX 1660ti graphics card in the base. It's the best of both worlds for me. In my day-to-day work requirements, I do lots of photo editing and design work in Photoshop, as well as motion graphics in After Effects, video editing in Premiere Pro and vector illustration in Illustrator. I also like to dabble in 3d modeling.
When I was offered the chance to test a Surface Book 3 from the Tech Insider program, I jumped at the chance. Reviewers in this invitation-only program are provided products for the purpose of writing honest, unbiased reviews.
Over the last few days, I've been putting this machine to through the ringer. It has absolutely handled all that I've thrown at it so far. I'm currently working on some motion graphics and web design assets for an upcoming conference. I had begun the motion graphics work on my current desktop machine and was curious how well the Surface Book would handle it. It has performed very well. I am getting render speeds similar (and in many cases, better) than my workstation PC (with a Xeon processor and a bit older Quadro graphics card). I imagine this is in part due to the newer processor the Surface Book is using. It's very satisfying to be working on a project and disconnect the screen to take some notes from a meeting.
Speaking of which, the screen removal is very interesting as well. Windows will tell you when there is software that will be impacted by removing the screen from the base (since you'll be unable to use the discrete graphics card when removed). Very handy. There is a slight delay when you tap the button to remove it before you can actually remove the screen, but it's only around a second or two.
While testing with Photoshop, I was able to easily edit large files (the screenshot I've shown is me editing a 265mb file) without any performance issues whatsoever, including zooming/panning around the image and applying effects to smart objects and with many layers. Photoshop performs VERY well on this machine. Testing with the ever-demanding After Effects, performance was also very good. In the screenshot I've shown, I am in the middle of an intro video for the conference project I spoke about. I was deliberately trying to tax the machine by using multiple instances of some demanding effects and expressions (After Effects' scripting language), since After Effects is very taxing to the CPU. Render times were equal to, or better than my desktop machine. All while running off battery! Very impressive. I also wanted to test the rendering speed of a complex scene in Blender. I downloaded one of the demo scenes that Blender makes available on their website, since it would be much more advanced than anything I've created. This one titled "Spring". It's some beautiful work, and the final render took approximately one hour for a 1000x2000 image. Again, very impressive for a portable machine, all while working on battery power.
Speaking of the battery- the battery life has been pretty great. Since I've been working the machine very hard, it's battery life has been about 7 hours. Again, this is when I'm doing very demanding tasks, like creating or rendering in After Effects, or that Blender rendering. During less demanding use (web browsing, word processing, coding), I'm getting very good battery life, much better than I anticipated. I'd say around 12 hours. That's sort of tough for me to estimate, since I'm not using it non-stop for those times. Also, a nice little side-effect of the processor being in the screen, rather than the base like most laptops, there is little to no heat on your lap. Even during demanding tasks, since most of the heat is generated at the screen/tablet area of the machine and quietly sent out from it. Another nice feature for video editing and motion graphics, is the aspect ratio of the screen. It's a little taller than other laptops, which is actually very helpful. This gives you additional room for your audio/video tracks and feels less cramped that standard 16:9 displays. It also has excellent and accurate color reproduction.
Overall, I'm extremely impressed with this machine. It is exactly what I was hoping it would be. If I had any complaints, it would be that this particular model I am testing is only a 256gb SSD. It's fine for most things, but I just need to make sure and offload any large projects once I'm done. The bright side of that, is that it will make me better about backing up my projects. :) I also wouldn't have minded getting one with a more RAM. The 16gb performs VERY well, but I imagine I could squeeze out even more performance with the 32gb model. If you're looking for a machine that can perform any creative tasks, I'm not sure there's a better form factor out there. The ability to use high end full-featured editing software, while also being able to use a pen input is absolutely great. Especially when you have the screen removed, or reversed to create a slightly elevated canvas.
Pros: Beautiful looking machine, great productivity features, love the removable screen to use as a tablet along with the pen input, taller aspect ratio, excellent performance in Photoshop, After Effects, Blender and FreeCAD, excellent battery life, very color-accurate screen, pretty decent as a gaming machine too (I didn't want to get too much into this, since I think most people are probably looking for productivity, but the GTX 1660ti is a pretty capable graphics card for gaming as well. I played some recent games, like Gears Tactics and it was performing very well in it)
Cons: I would like to have a larger SSD, as the model I was offered is only 256gb, I wouldn’t mind the trackpad being a bit larger (though, I can't completely say this is a con just yet, since my hands do rest nicely to the sides of it while typing, so I think I'll just have to see after more prolonged use if I would really prefer it to be larger)

Excellently Designed System

This wine preservation system is very well-designed and easy to use. I was a little intimidated at first, since it looked a little complicated, but once I understood how it worked. I was surprised at how simple it was to use. It feels sturdy, and capable of being used for years to come. Care seems to have been taken in each piece that was included. The carrying case (which is also great to store it in our kitchen drawer), the screw-on caps to the unit itself. How well the system works, even with screw-on cap bottles is very impressive. You just remove the lid from the bottle and put on one of the reusable ones that came with the Coravin system and the needle just stabs through it. It all works very well. Cleaning is easy as well, you just run a bit of water through it and purge the system with a quick spray. Overall, I think the only thing about this that I can count against it is the speed a which the wine is dispensed. It can be a bit slow. I saw that Coravin offers a large needle/pin to provide quicker flow, so I think we’ll give that a shot. The replacement caps for the screw-on bottles and the air capsules aren’t overly expensive either. Otherwise, this seems like an excellent way to preserve and still enjoy your wine.
Pros: Very easy to use, well-made, elegant looking and thoughtful design, reasonable priced air capsule and screw-on cap replacements
Cons: Speed at which wine is dispensed is a bit slow (though this can be modified with a larger pin/needle)

A complete package

This brush is packed with features that will help you get one of the cleanest brushed you've ever had. The AI mode using your phone to show which areas you're neglecting in real-time is so useful, and something I didn't think I needed until I tried it. Not just a gimmick, it actually has made my mouth noticeably cleaner. Pairing with my phone was extremely easy and fast. There were no hassles whatsoever in setup. It comes with 3 brush heads to try as well. All worked well for the specific tasks, though I may be a bit partial to how clean I felt after using the "whitening" brush. An extra bonus with this brush is the travel case, that also doubles as a charger, and includes storage for two brush heads and even includes a spot to charge your phone as well. Very well-thought out. The brush itself takes a bit for a full charge, but you can simply store it on the charger, otherwise though, the battery lasts for quite a while. At least two weeks for me, with brushing twice daily for about two minutes each time. Also worth noting, is that even if you're not using the AI brushing, it also records your time brushing, which are stored on the brush and can be synced to your phone in batches. It also warns about applying too much pressure while brushing with a beep and red light on the handle. You can also have the app create an Amazon Dash button and automatically reorder your brush heads once you're due.
While overall I really like this brush, there are a couple things that do detract from it being perfect. First, the brush is fairly loud. I often go to bed after my wife, and I've woken her a few times from brushing my teeth. It's louder than other powered brushes I've used in the past. Secondly, the brush head is "taller" than other brushes. When I say taller, I mean from the tip of the bristles to the back of the brush head, so maybe it would be better classified as depth. But with the rotating action and more round nature of the head, I do think it works better than the others I've used.
Pros: Great features, AI assisted brushing, pressure sensor, good battery life, thorough cleaning with rounded brush head, great companion app, excellent travel/charging case
Cons: Louder than other powered brushes, taller/deeper than normal brush heads

One of the nicest looking smartwatches
on November 27, 2019
Posted by: dustinw
from BROKEN ARROW
In my opinion, you'd be hard-pressed to find a nicer looking watch than this. It has a very classic style and is not near as bulky as many other smartwatches. It packs many competitive features as well, with few compromises. I'll get the biggest issue out of the way first. If you're using all the features, the battery is going to need to be charged daily. If you're fine with that, then this watch will likely easily suit you. The bright side of that, is that the watch charges very quickly. They boast 80% in an hour, but I think it may be even faster than that. It also has some great options to extend battery life. For instance, you can have it shut off connections from 11 pm to 6 am to conserve battery life, and that will help it easily last two full days. You can also enter these battery saving modes very quickly from the pull down menu on the watch. It's quick to navigate between screens and applications, call quality is very good, notification management in this latest version of Wear OS is quick and easy to use. Notifications show on the watch instantaneously, which were sometimes slightly delays on other watched I've used. The knob dials on the side of the watch are very smooth, and I haven't accidentally used them unintentionally like I initially feared. The clasp is also great, I have a medium-sized wrist and had a local jeweler remove 3 links to fit me. It's not overly snug or uncomfortable, and it actually feels lighter than any of the other smartwatches I've owned. Even with the metal band, which looks very nice in my opinion. The fitness tracking actually seems to be a bit more accurate than other watched I've had as well. Including a near-continous heart rate monitor. I have mine currently set to take a reading every five minutes. I haven't seen a way to track floors though, and perhaps it's unable to do so. It also doesn't track sleep natively that I could see, but there are some third part apps that fill this need, if that's something you're looking for. The one I used (Sleep as Android) also integrated with Google Fit. Overall, I'm very happy. This is a smartwatch that gives you all the features you'd expect, and looks very classy doing so.
Pros: Elegant, lighter than expected, quick, charges very fast
Cons: Battery life (though this can be tweaked to last longer), some fitness features may not be available out of the box, or at all

A worthy upgrade
on November 7, 2019
Posted by: dustinw
from BROKEN ARROW
I currently have a first generation Google Home Mini, and it's been great. I was very impressed at how a few little features can make such a difference. Most importantly, the audio quality seems to be very much improved from the previous generation. The Nest Mini sounds excellent, and is able to hear and decipher what I'm saying, even when my surround sound is up fairly high. It's very accurate as well. It's so convenient to set up routines for frequent things you may do as well. I have routines set to change the colors on my hue lights and dim the ones in the hall so that I can more properly set the mood for the movie or show I'm watching. It's very easy to recommend this latest iteration, even as an addition to your home, if you already have a Google Home device.
Pros: sounds great, excellent ability to hear and accurately use my voice, convenient addition of wall mount
Cons: now uses a different power cord adapter, so replacements aren't as easy

Precise and Highly Customizable
on October 16, 2019
Posted by: dustinw
from BROKEN ARROW
This is likely the most customizable mouse I have ever used. From the different DPI settings (which are easily switchable on the fly) to the six buttons on the side. There are so many ways you can make this mouse suit your needs. The software is well-designed and easy to use as well. It even allows for a different profile for the different game or software you're using. I'm even really enjoying this for my work in Photoshop and Premiere Pro. I've set the six side buttons to quickly select tools I use in Photoshop to help speed up my workflow. Very handy stuff. The mouse feels comfortable to use and I really like being able to switch scroll modes quickly and easily. If you're in the market for a new mouse for gaming, or even for work, this is a great option. My only real complaint is that it's not a rechargeable battery, but with the battery life it's getting from a single battery, that's not even really an issue.
Pros: Comfortable, Highly customizable, game/app profiles, well-designed and easy to use software, extremely responsive and precise
Cons: non-rechargeable battery (though the battery life helps with this)

Excellent video quality, easy setup
on October 7, 2019

from BROKEN ARROW
If you're looking to add home security cameras without needing to run wires, these are tough to beat. With high quality video and great field of view combined with some great software, it's a great experience all around. Setup will take just a matter of minutes. No need to run power to the cameras, as they'll last for months on a single charge. You also get excellent motion detection and useful notifications on your phone (that include a photo of what was captured). All very useful, and it's clear that thought was put into these. The ability to set "zones" so you can even determine where in the camera's wide field of view motion was detected. If you choose, you can add additional detection features (though these do cost a minor monthly fee). I'm impressed with the detail these are able to capture in such a small package. They also look like a high quality product, and don't look like a cheap product stuck to your house. Two-way communication and the spot light round out some other great features. The removable battery is a nice touch as well. That way, if the batter does ever start having a shorter life span, you could just swap it out, instead of replacing the entire camera. I do wish they package came with two of the magnetic mounts. It comes with one magnetic mount, and one pivot mount. The magnetic one is so versatile though. Positioning and adjustments are very easy.
Pros: Excellent quality video, extremely easy to set up, great app and software, removable battery
Cons: only a single magnetic mount

Sleek and great sounding sub
on September 30, 2019
Posted by: dustinw
from BROKEN ARROW
First of all, and most importantly, this sub sounds excellent at all volume levels, For most, that's probably all you need to know. :) It's sleek finish looks great, and will accentuate most setups. I added this sub to my current 7.1.4 setup. It easily fills the room with deep, clear bass. I'm very impressed with how nice it sounds. I threw plenty of different media types at it as well, from different devices. I tried live TV (from a cable box), Xbox One X (streaming Netflix, Games and Blu Rays) and PS4 Pro. The bass remained very clear and was consistently excellent. Again, very happy with this sub.
Pros: Excellent sound, easy to set up, very elegantly designed
Cons: Doesn't include a sub cable (that's just a nitpick), it's difficult to find really anything I didn't like about this sub.

Crisp sounding easy to use soundbar
on August 8, 2019
Posted by: dustinw
from BROKEN ARROW
I'm pretty impressed with this soundbar. It has clear, crisp audio, even at high levels. It's ability to decode Dolby Atmos, and do a good job taking advantage of the positional audio is a definite plus. The addition of the wireless sub is also great. No wires dangling, and the setup with to pair with the soundbar was really easy. My only complaint would be getting the ARC (audio return channel) to work with my LG tv. Eventually I found that I had to enable the device control (CEC) to get it to work. Since then, it's been smooth sailing.
Pros: Dead simple to set up, crisp sound, great sounding even at high volumes, smooth bass with an easy-to-setup wireless subwoofer
Cons: Getting ARC to work with my LG tv took some fiddling

Beautifully designed headphones that sounds equally as good. Very crisp highs and clean bass. Very easy to pair with my Android phone and was ready to go in seconds. Excellent battery as well. My only real issues with these are that I wish they came with a hard-shell style case and that they collapsed a bit smaller. But, there's no denying the look and quality of these headphones.
Pros: beautiful, excellent sound, easy to use, very comfortable
Cons: only a sleeve for carrying

Listen to your playlist in peace with these Sony headphones. They have a 40mm dome driver to deliver the full depth of audio, and the noise cancelling feature minimizes outside disturbances for a better listening experience. These Sony headphones have a battery life of up to 30 hours for extended jam sessions.

Do these headphones have the same cracking problem that the last version had! I am planning to buy them soon and I want them to last for the price. Thank you.

I have yet to have any cracking problems with these. But, I have the previous model as well (the original 1000x) and haven't had any problems with them either. I use them daily and travel with them as well. I do keep them in the case when I'm not using them, could something have possibly happened to yours to cause them to crack? If you haven't already, it may be worth contacting Sony. These are a premium set of headphones, and they have lived up to that with me.

Bring the power of Google directly to your fingertips with the Google Pixel. A large 32GB of storage keep data secure, while unlimited cloud storage transfers data as needed, and it's completely automatic. The large 5-inch screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4 to ensure the Google Pixel remains scratch-free.

How does the Pixel show email and txt notifications? I have a Moto X and it allows me to read the first few lines without waking the phone. Does this have something similar?

It does show previews on the lock screen and in the notifications at the top of the screen when it's unlocked. You can also reply from messages from that pull-down when it's unlocked. Hopefully that helps!

this laptop does not have many reviews, why? and would you recommend this product if I like Netflix, traveling and take notes at school and some light gaming

This would be an excellent laptop for traveling with it's light weight and thin profile. It would easily handle Netflix and other office-like activities, including Photoshop and mid-level video editing. As far as the gaming goes, it depends on which games you intend to play. It probably will be hit and miss with newer titles, but less-demanding games should work. As an example: I was able to get Killer Instinct to run with playable performance. To do so, I had to drop the resolution and other effects to their minimum. Not bad at all. As a tip, if you do get this laptop and are pushing it's limits for gaming, you may want to make sure and set it's power options to "Maximum Performance". That way it won't throttle it's performance to extend battery life, and instead let it perform at it's maximum. :)

Can programs such as Netflix be used on this TV? Also does the TV convert 2D to 3D?

This TV does support smart apps (like Netflix).

Samsung does list the 2D to 3D feature, though I must admit, I haven't used it yet. Here's a quote from their features:

"Samsung's built-in 3D processor is so powerful it can convert 2D (normal) movies and photos to 3D in real-time with the push of a button."

Hope that helps!

The included stylus with the Surface Pro does allow for a right-click. You can either use the button on the pen, or do a long-press with the pen tip. I believe this will also work with your finger, but if you're using a desktop application, you may need the precision of the stylus.
