A Lull in an Otherwise Great Career
on July 4, 2008

This is definately not Coldplay's best album. In fact, I'd say it is their worst. I mean, sure, some of the songs are great. I got the album for the "Speed of Sound" single, and because I was expecting the rest of it to be great because, hey, it's COLDPLAY. But I was disapointed. There are some songs that are total duds. I absolutely HATED the song "Swallowed in the Sea." Awful. Overall, not a HORRID album, but definately not up to Coldplay's standards. If it weren't for "Viva la Vida...", I would have given up on Coldplay completely.

Decent Film with Good-Looking People
on July 3, 2008

The film is okay. I'm a fan of Tony Scott's work, but the direction and editing is a little off-beat for my taste. I think the acting is pretty good; I like Keira Knightly, and the rest of the cast did well. The story is interesting, but it starts off strong and doesn't deliver like you might expect. In fact, I'd only give the movie 3 stars if it weren't for Edgar Ramirez...wow, that man is easy on the eyes!

Country...With a Brain
on June 29, 2008

While much of today's popular country seems dumbed-down and almost ridiculous, Mary Chapin Carpenter brings back the old-school heart of country with her music. While her voice is in no way spectacular, the messages of her songs are relevant and meaningful. An especially important and innovative track is "He Thinks He'll Keep Her," a song that criticizes marrying young and living the "American Dream/Family" kind of life. Mary Chapin Carpenter is one of the few comtemporary artists that is keeping me from giving up on country music completely.

An Innovative Group

I heard the song "Handlebars" somewhere once, and thought the beats were great, so I delved into some more of the Flobots. Until I started to really listen to them, I didn't realize that their music had such strong political messages. Wow! The music is great, and the messages are powerful. The Flobots are quite an innovative group.

This two-disc set of Tony Scott's True Romance offers a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English soundtracks are rendered in both DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital Stereo. English, Spanish, and French subtitles are accessible. The extensive supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Tony Scott, a second commentary from stars Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette, a third commentary track by Oscar-winning screenwriter Quentin Tarantino, storyboards, deleted scenes with optional director's commentary, a featurette, a photo gallery, the original theatrical trailer, an alternate ending with optional commentary from both Scott and Tarantino, and a variety of supporting actors (Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, Brad Pitt, Michael Rapaport) providing scene-specific commentary. This is an outstanding set from Warner Bros.

An Underrated Gem of a Gorefest
on June 15, 2008

This film is just as good as anything you'd expect from early '90s Quentin Tarantino. The problem is that this film is underrated; it is sandwiched between the controversial "Resevoir Dogs" and the acclaimed "Pulp Fiction." Also, it was not directed that Tarantino himself (although Tony Scott does an excellent job). In spite of these factors, this is one of my favorite movies. It has a superb ensemble cast (Gary Oldman's performance is hilarious, my favorite in the film), awesome action scenes (the Patricia Arquette-James Gandolfini scene will leave you shaking), and it's just an all-around good movie. Great to watch if you're into violent action films and have a sense of humor.

Robert Zemeckis' special effects laden black comedy Death Becomes Her comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that fails to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film. English, Spanish, and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. Spanish subtitles are accessible, and the English soundtrack is closed-captioned. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence. This is a sub-par release from Universal.

Hilarious!

The plot is hilarious, and the performances from Meryl (one of my favorite actresses) and Goldie are great fun. But my favorite thing about this movie is Bruce Willis...he's not the macho, sweat-covered-hero that you see him as in most of his movies. In this film, he plays someone who is physically as well as emotionally weak, yet he still manages to come out on top. His drastic turn in this movie is what makes it so unique. Also, the special effects were pretty good, considering that it came out in the early '90s. A visually satisfying film with a unique, fun plot.

The second season of HBO's Big Love follows the Henrickson family as they attempt to live normal lives while hiding their polygamous lifestyle from the world. The already difficult situation is complicated by the possibility of bringing a fourth wife into the fold, as well as patriarch Bill Henrickson's (Bill Paxton) plans to expand his business.

A Great Show That Has Found Its Stride
on May 15, 2008

Word on the street is that, due to the writer's strike a few months ago, the airing of Season 3 of "Big Love" will be put off until fall, going out of pattern to its regular summer airings. It's great that they want to ensure that the show is top-quality for viewers, but what will fans do until then? Why not enjoy Season 2 on DVD? As great as Season 1 was, Season 2 really showed it at a creative high. So indulge in the box set (less expensive than Season 1's) to tide you over until the fall airing of the new season, and ponder as to how they will manage to top this fantastic season.

Oldies-Style Rock with Attitude
on May 10, 2008

Who are these "Foxboro Hot Tubs"? It's really Green Day in disguise! And the creative geniuses have come out with this short album, of oldies-style rock-n-roll with a twist. The songs are fun and light-hearted. "Red Tide" is probably my favorite track, almost reminesent of Oasis, back when everybody thought that they'd be the "next big thing." I hope that Green Day takes on these personas again, because even though this style of music is pretty different than we're used to from them, it's definately just as good! I just wish they'd come out with more than a few tracks...

I'm Not Usually Into This Kind of Movie, But...
on May 3, 2008

I HATED "A Walk to Remember." So when my friends wanted to see "The Notebook," I was like, oh, great, another stupid Nicholas Sparks movie. But it was actually really, really good. Excellent acting: Rachel McAdams (who played Regina in "Mean Girls" the same year) proves her versatility as an actress, but it was Ryan Gosling who really stole the show. An excellent movie, one that both women AND men will enjoy. The ending is very sad, but sweet.

Awesome Show!
on May 3, 2008

I can't believe how underrated this show is. "Grounded for Life" is HILARIOUS! Even if the situations can be extreme at times, the Finnertys were the most honest family on television. The humor of the show is just insane, but the funniest thing about it is that it seems so REAL. Lily reacts to situations like any bratty teenager, and the two boys, Jimmy and Henry, are always the funniest. This is such an awesome show.
