Another Funny Season of Coupling!

The second season is even funnier than the first! It even includes 9 episodes. That 3 more than season one! And I think the quality of the jokes and situations are better.
Best episode of the season – “The Man with Two Legs.” Jeff accidentally tells a woman he has a wooden leg and he is now desperate to hack it off! Richard Coyle is so great at comedy! I don’t think another actor could pull this off. Another great episode is “Naked.” Actually, that might be the best episode EVER of Coupling! A love interest is introduced for Jeff on his 30th birthday. Of course, he has to go and make a fool of himself. But it does have an upbeat ending. That’s why I love it so much!
This season also shows a budding romance between Sally and Patrick. Okay, so it was budding in the first season, but now it gets another nudge in the right direction. But the season ends in a cliffhanger between Susan and Steve. Will they stay together?
What's great about it: More Storylines Pop Up and Two Ultra funny Episodes!
What's not so great: Slight cliffhanger in the last episode of the season.
I would recommend this to a friend!

This disc contains six episodes of the British television series Coupling: "Flushed," "Size Matters," "Sex, Death and Nudity," "Inferno," "The Girl With Two Breasts," and "The Cupboard of Patrick's Love." Each episode is presented in the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.33:1. English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. There are no subtitles but the soundtracks are closed-captioned. Supplemental materials include interviews with the cast and crew concerning the characters and the genesis of the program and biographies of the cast. This is a solid release from Warner Brothers.

Purchase Full of Laughs!
on September 16, 2009

I really enjoyed this show when it was on! The jokes were funny and original; plus the cast was lovable. At the time, it was very popular. Now when I re-watch the DVDs, I find it far less exciting. The jokes only revolve around… you know… bed deeds. Those are cheap and simple to write. It’s easy to get a laugh when you use dirty words. ALL sitcoms do that now!
But the reason the show is so funny is because it’s base on the writer’s actual relationship. Good jokes come from real life. And then there are phrases, such as the “Giggle Loop” or "people-phobia" that you’ll find yourself repeating in real life.
“The Girl with Two…” is probably the best episode of the season. Jeff tries to chat up a girl, only to realize that she doesn’t speak English. And since he has a habit of saying stupid things, it could work in his favor. He accidentally said he collects women’s ears in bucket. The first episode, on how Steve and Susan meet, kind of hints at Steve’s later behavior in succeeding seasons.
This is a fantastic show. Jeffrey by far is the funniest character. He always has the best lines. He’s always ready with some gimmick about his mother, accidental word slippage, or advice that ends up with more trouble rather than solutions. Any joke involving him will get a laugh. Susan, I feel, is a bit undeveloped. She’s always described as the sensible one who makes lists, yet she is never seen making lists! Patrick is very different from the usual womanizing male character. He has one goal – and he doesn’t care if the woman sucks at it. Sally is great! She seems to suffer from low self-esteem, but she is definitely the most attractive of the female cast. And she always gains a new phobia! Although I like Jane, I don’t usually care for the stereotypical “stupid” character. It’s too unrealistic to find funny. But she does have a few ideas, such as “bi-vegetarianism.”
Of course, this series proves how much British men think about size. Coupling mentions it a lot! Expect it to come up repeatedly. At least American men can talk about something else besides their size!
What's great about it: Funny Character & Plots
What's not so great: Only 6 episodes. But they all fit on one disc!

Entertaining Halloween Movies
on September 11, 2009

This is a great set! You get 2 movies on 1 disc! The extras include a brief “behind the scenes” program and a commercial for the movie “Twitches.” That commercial is actually pretty lame. It’s just Tia & Tamara explaining the movie. There’s no preview or anything! What a waste!
Halloweentown
The first Halloweentown is a good movie for children. If an adult is a Halloween enthusiast, they might enjoy this film. But an adult watching this just because will not like it at all! The special effects are really bad! And I don’t understand why. Mr. Boogedy was a Disney movie made in 1980’s and it was fantastic! Halloweentown had people walking around in latex masks! It looked stupid. What I liked about the film was that the main character, Marnie, is a little heavy. I think that’s important to show in a children’s movie. Debbie Reynolds is terrific as the grandmother! I was actually surprised to see Joey Zimmerman (Ulysses from Earth 2) in here. He was outstanding as a reluctant warlock! The mother comes across as too mean. Why must they always portray the mom as a bully in kids’ movies?
The plot: Marnie is a 13 year old girl who finds out that she comes from a long line of witches when her grandmother visits her on Halloween. Eager to begin her training, Marnie follows her grandmother to Halloweentown, where witches, goblins, and ghouls are the only occupants. Of course, Halloweentown is then threatened by the evil Kalabar and it is up to Marnie to save the town. It’s cheap. But kids will love to watch it on Halloween.
One thing that sticks out is that they randomly use the word “Wiccan.” It’s not followed by accusations or false stereotypes like “human sacrifices” or “devils.” Most movies don’t say Wiccan like it’s an everyday word. They have to make a big deal out of it. Although it is a bit offensive that there is a Wiccan Halloween costume. I mean – would someone dress up as a Christian for Halloween? And the Wiccan costume kind of looked like a princess costume. Okay – this is an itty bitty part in the movie. You may not even notice it. I just think it’s progressive for a Disney movie in the 1990’s to be so accepting. I mean, Drag Me to Heck is from 2009 and it has an offensive image of a gypsy woman. But to clarify, the Cromwell witches are actual witches. Not Wiccans.
Halloweentown 2: Kalabar’s Revenge
The sequel is way better then the original! Even an adult can enjoy this film! The actors are now older, so I guess the writers decided that they need to adapt the script as such. Marnie has a crush on Kal, who turns out to be Kalabar’s son. Kal has a plot to turn the inhabitants of Halloweentown into humans, while turning the mortals on Earth into evil creatures.
The plot and special effects are better in this movie. There’s continuity problems, but it’s okay. A kid could overlook it. And it also stars Peter Wingfield (Methos from Highlander). He was so great in here! If you’re a fan, you’ll love him in here. But he always gives a great performance anyways!
I think this DVD is worth it for the two movies. You have to watch the first Halloweentown anyways to understand the sequel. However, a better witch/Halloween movie would be Hocus Pocus. But if you have kids, or are a Halloween lover, then you won’t be disappointed with this DVD.
What's great about it: You get 2 movies! The sequel is great. Wonderful actors!
What's not so great: The first movie can only be enjoyed by children. However, the sequel is fun for both kids and adults.

Enjoyable Modern Day Fairy Tale
on September 11, 2009

Christina Ricci plays a young lady cursed with a pig face. They didn’t go overboard on the prosthetics. She indeed has a piggy nose, but it’s no different from some other actors & actresses I’ve seen on the big screen. It is just wide and upturned. She was actually kind of cute with the pig snout. Even cuter than she is without it – and that’s not insult. You’ll see it too when you watch the film…
Because Penelope has a piggy nose, her mother keeps her locked up in their mansion. She makes her join a dating service in the hopes that she’d get married and break the curse. This is really a cute movie for children. Adults will like it too. The wardrobe is fantastic. They are actually wearing things you’d expect to see in a fairy tale book. The plot itself is not original, but still a good film. Very bright and chirpy!
But sometimes the movie is a little too cheesy. Men throw themselves out the window in hysterics, rather then be in the same room as Penelope for even one second. And her face wasn’t even that bad! Everyone’s shocked by Penelope’s piggy nose, but no one reacts to Annie’s horse teeth? She’s played by Reese Witherspoon, and she’s actually really good in here. I was not expecting that.
This movie is supposed to be about acceptance and learning to love yourself for who you are. Here’s the negative part of the movie - Penelope promises to kill herself if the curse is never broken. That is so inappropriate for a PG movie about self image! It did add some angst, but I wouldn’t want little girls to watch this and then feel self-conscious and desperate. Why mention suicide in a children’s movie?! And then Penelope gets drunks. Might imply to young children that drinking is cool. But, of course, I was watching Nightmare on Elm Street when I was in kindergarten. It all depends on the parents.
Catharine O’Hara as the mother was great! I always complain how they make the mothers so evil in children movies! But O’Hara played her character in such a lovable way! In fact, she’s probably the only character that you could, in truth, describe as “misunderstood.” O’Hara’s so talented and funny! Other actors in here are Nick Frost, Burn Gorman (Owen from Torchwood!), and Peter Dinklage. That suicide line makes me so mad!!!! But despite that, I would still recommend the movie.
What's great about it: Cute. Very bright. It was well acted.
What's not so great: It mentioned suicide. It was so odd and out of place in a kid's movie....

BEST KIDS SHOW EVER!
on September 9, 2009

This has to be the best children's show ever! This is what I remember from my childhood! The episodes are strange, wild and crazy. Some are a little creepy - like the kid with the braces episode. I like how Eerie was so incredibly eerie and Mars & Simon always investigated the paranormal every week and collected their evidence. It was like the X-Files for children! Their adventures were great! I remember chanting as a kid "bite the hand that feeds you." I know, I know - silly. “Scariest Home Videos” is a great episode. Although, it's hard to choose a favorite because they are all good! The tupperware episode stays vivid in my mind. Oh - and there's a young Toby Maguire in here. It's so cute! But I can't believe it only lasted a season! I can't think of a show I enjoyed more in my youth! I remember watching this while eating waffles on a Saturday morning. And it's still fun to watch now. But it's a definite must if you have children. I can watch it for more than just nostalgia, because it is that great! But for nostalgic purposes - some extras would have been nice. But even so, Eerie, Indiana really is "the center of weirdness for the universe." You have to own this!
What's great about it: Simon and Mars are great characters played by great actors! Indiana is so eerie!
What's not so great: No extras

After a string of successful hit records, Sonny and Cher attempted to take the movie world by storm. After they failed in that attempt, they regrouped and refashioned, blossoming into a cabaret act that found success in nightclubs. Their easy banter and famous names led to them getting their own television variety show in the '70s. The show was a hit, breathing new life into their career. The Ultimate Collection includes over nine hours from the series. Each of the episodes is presented in standard full-frame transfers that preserve the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. Supplemental materials include commentary by Cher, interviews with the series' producers, and original television advertisements run by CBS for the show. A karaoke feature adds a nice final touch to this winning three-disc box set.

Great for Lovers of the 70's!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't call it an "ultimate" collection, but it is very good. They have good guest stars such as the Jackson Five and Donnie & Marie. They include good skits, like Vamp. Their jokes about one another are endearing. However, the show is not as good after Sonny & Cher get divorced. And they have all the songs you should be familiar with. It's great for nostalgic reasons. But it's also good if you never seen it before. I have never seen the Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and I was not disappointed. The extras are good too. Cher will dazzle you!
What's great about it: Funny Skits & Jokes, Memorable Songs, and a Good Selection of Extras!
What's not so great: Ultimate makes it sound like it's complete. It is FAR from complete. Price is bad too, considering how little you get.

A young woman trying to sort out her life after college returns home to Niagara Falls and gets a job at a souvenir shop, where she discovers all sorts of inanimate objects are attempting to communicate with her in the offbeat comedy drama series Wonderfalls, which arrives on DVD in this special collector's set. Wonderfalls: The Complete Series features all 13 episodes from the quirky cult favorite, including nine that never aired on American television. Also included in this package are audio commentaries on several episodes, a short documentary on the production of the show, a look at how the special effects were created, and a music video from XTC leader Andy Partridge.

Not the Best, but Decent Enough

Bryan Fuller does have quite an imagination, but unfortunately all his series tend to be the same. Now - I'm a big fan of Pushing Daisies and Dead Like Me, but I do get bored with seeing the same thing over and over. While George was lovable on Dead Like Me, Jaye on Wonderfalls is not so easily likable. Obviously she's written mean, but the actress had trouble pulling it off (even if she is pretty). But as the episode go on, you do grow to love her. But that is a common problem with Bryan Fuller's shows - you need to watch several episode before you can get into them. The first episode never "hooks" the audience. But unfortunately, Wonderfalls only aired 4 episodes. The episodes that weren't aired are really good. Mostly because they begin to focus on Jaye's family more. They were really interesting. Actually, the show would have been really good without the gimmicks. I think the only reason he set it in Niagara Falls was for the cool theme song and show title. But apparently everyone who worked on that show had never been to Niagara Falls. There were a few mistakes: Niagara Falls is not Canada, Native Americans are First Nation, and stun guns are illegal in NY -- Sharon wouldn't risk her legal career by carrying & using stun guns. I like that Jaye has a fancy degree, but she just works in retail. That rings true for a lot of people I know. Of course, the difference is – Jaye chooses to work in retail. And for someone who chooses to work there, she sure complains a lot about it.
Jewel Staite looks terrible in here! I didn’t realize she had a Picasso face. But there is one good guest star – Patricia Zentilli. She’s so beautiful and so funny! She was the highlight of the show! Lee Pace is also a joy to watch as Jaye’s brother. The mouth-breather was also a riot! But they missed out by not having actors from the Niagara Falls area. Even as guest stars, they could have had Christine Baranski, Wendy Malick, John Lithgow, David Boreanaz, Chad Michael Murray, Nick Bakav, Vinnie Gallo (that’s a stretch), or Suzanne Cryer. I point this out because Bryan Fuller bragged about hiring Canadian actors. It struck me as odd because it was set in America, not Canada, regardless from where it was filmed. All shows filmed in Canada have Canadian actors so I don’t understand his point, unless he was claiming Canadian actors make the show more authentic – which it doesn’t.
It is never explained why inanimate animals talked to Jaye. I don't think Fuller knew either, so he's lucky the show was canceled. The last episode is okay. Although it explains nothing, it does finish off the series well enough. So, if you want a silly, fairy-tale–like series, then you won’t be disappointed. But you’d still be better off with Pushing Daisies.
What's great about it: Quirky & Silly. Love Patricia Zentilli as Angie Olsen!
What's not so great: Too many gimmicks that weren't needed. People from Niagara Falls are not mean like Jaye is portrayed.

Captivating Fairy Tale...
on September 8, 2009
Posted by: Lexa
from Lockport, NY
This movie would have been really great if it were dubbed. Reading subtitles throughout the entire film distracted the viewer from the scenery and special effects. Now – this movie is NOT for children! I see many people complaining that it was too violent for kids. It’s rated R for a reason. And as an adult who loves fantasy movies, this movie was good. But I wouldn’t watch it against because of the subtitles. Such a visual film should have been dubbed because you lose a lot from it.
I say the movie is good, not great, because it is really overrated. From all the promotion it received, it seemed like it was going to be a fantastical fairy-tale. They even compared it to Lord of the Rings, which is a far superior film. There’s only a small supernatural element to Pan’s Labyrinth. I want more Pan! I want more fairies! What you get is a lot of scenes with soldiers and servants. And at the end of the movie, it seems like you’re suppose to decide on your own if the fantasy world was real or imaginary. But watching the extras should set you straight.
There were wonderful gross-out scenes in here! Such scenes are sawing off a soldier’s leg, the Captain stitching his mouth back together (then drinking booze), and this skinny creature with eyes in his hands that ate children! There’s actually a lot to this movie, so you will find it beneficial to watch the extras afterwards. Of course, that may not be a good thing if you HAVE to watch the extras. But you could always not watch them, and then leave the plot of the movie to your own imagination.
And throughout the movie, I was very suspicious of the faun. Ofelia broke the rules, yet he gives her a second chance? That seems fishy…. But they just drop it! Ah! Some writers will do anything just to move the story along! I guess he ran out of ideas on how to get Ofelia out of trouble. That’s okay. It’s just one weak point in the film.
So overall, it’s a good film. You’re sure to enjoy it. Though, it still needs more fantasy to it.
What's great about it: Visually appealing. A fairy-tale for adults.
What's not so great: Too much plot focus on the war - not enough time dedicated to the fairy-tale aspect. Subtitled.

Travesty! And not in the lovable way!!!

This movie wasn’t terrible, but it was still a major disappointment. I am a HUGE Abba fan and I can honestly say that this movie is an injustice to their music. Casting was completely WRONG When I heard that Meryl Streep was in this, I immediately thought “Huh… I didn’t know Meryl Streep could sing.” And guess what? SHE CAN’T! And Pierce Bronson’s voice was so grating! But at least he’s semi-pretty. So I can forgive him. But there was one thing that really bothered me. Donna was in her FORTIES when she gave birth to Sophie! Why was she disowned? Shouldn’t her mother be glad that’s her daughter finally gave her a grandchild? She probably had given up hope! And the dot, dot, dot bit was cute. But less cute when you realize it’s a forty year old woman writing that! And her lovers were in their twenties! But of course, they never bring that up, despite how ridiculous it looks in the film. I mean, you can REALLY tell Meryl Streep’s age. Who was the makeup artist for this film?
I’ve read reviews that this movie takes place in the 1980’s. If that’s so, then you;ll have to ignore the modern clothes, modern language, and the popularity of the internet! Someone messed up.
And the character of Donna was so obnoxious. Even more so, running around in those baggy overalls. What ugly costumes! Meryl Streep seriously needs to think about aging with dignity. It seemed like she was mimicking a 3 year old child in this. She looked even more ridiculous b/c she was acting beside Christine Baranksi, the epitome of talent, beauty, & sophistication. In fact, the only mature actress who could get away with Donna’s silliness would be Diane Keaton. She’s talented and lovable. Streep is not.
Then randomly at the end, Colin Firth likes men? Okay, so he did say that he hasn’t love another woman since Donna and he has dogs instead of children – but I wouldn’t call those hints. He usually does a better job at choosing roles, so it’s shocking that this movie was so bad. I’m an Abba fan, and I still disliked this film. But the movie does redeem itself at the end, when Colin Firth dancing in Abba attire. If I had to recommend this movie, it would only be for that scene alone. Amanda Seyfried gave a great performance. Her fiancé was a little off. But Christine Baranski definitely stole the show! She has never looked so good! The most talented actors come from Buffalo, NY! She can brighten up the cruddiest movies! Her character was a good one to play. I love, love, love musicals, but this was disappointing. The actors couldn’t sing, nor dance. I can’t believe this was theatrical. It really seemed like a made for TV movie. Even the extras were just “blah.” I can sing along without any help. However, this is the type of movie my grandmother would enjoy. And if you’re mad at your boyfriend, make him sit through this. HA! That will fix him!
What's great about it: Christine Baranki is so talented! Best scene is the ending scene with Colin Firth on stage with the rest of the cast!
What's not so great: Everything else. No one can sing. Meryl Streep was WRONGLY casted. Producers fell asleep on the job.

Hyterical Season!

This is a hilarious series! Coach Fox is such a big, tough guy, yet he always has something to whine about. He acts like he doesn't need his daughter around, but he's really desperate for her attention. And then his daughter starts dating Stuart, who she met in her mime class. You can't shorten his name to "Stu" because then you are taking the "art" out of his name. And Christine and Hayden make a wonderful couple. Christine is a fantastic character. Dauber also has hysterical lines. First Season definitely is the best season. The extras include the classic episode from Season 2, in which Hayden and Luthor spill grape juice on Christine's white carpet. It also has a flashback to the 80's special, which seems out of place. All it talks about is Miami Vice and the A-Team. I guess extras don't have to have anything to do with the DVD.
What's great about it: This role was meant for Craig T. Nelson!
