Final Destination 2's macabre roller coaster ride can now be enjoyed on DVD thanks to New Line Cinema's Infinifilm line. The disc is double sided, so the image is available in both widescreen (1.85:1) and standard pan-and-scan versions. Sound options range from Dolby Digital 5.1 to a DTS 6.1 track. Commentary is also provided by director David Ellis, producer Craig Perry, and screenwriters Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber. The discussion is light and insightful, with Perry dominating most of the discussion while giving various insights into the life of a horror producer. This being an Infinifilm release, it's full of other special features, the highlight being the "Bits and Pieces: Bringing Death to Life" documentary. Almost 30 minutes in length, the feature starts off with the history of cinema gore (including some fun interview clips from the "Godfather of Gore" Herschell Gordon Lewis) and then focuses on each Final Destination 2 death and the steps the special effects wizards took to pull them off. You'll also find "The Terror Gauge" -- a neat, but eventually lacking, feature in which a doctor straps a group of kids down while studying their fright levels as they watch the film. The third featurette is probably the most throw-away: "Cheating Death: Beyond & Back," a collection of interviews from various strange folk who've survived near-death experiences. An interested "Fact Track" is supplied, along with the Infinifilm pop-up screen, which lets the viewer go deeper into certain scenes by branching in small featurettes during the film. Some deleted scenes are also offered (with optional commentary), although don't get your hopes up for more blood, as these were mostly filmed for expositional purposes. Finally, the disc contains trailers for not only the two Final Destination films, but also Highwaymen, another road thriller from The Hitcher's director, Robert Harmon. All in all, this gruesome DVD is a home run, although some may find the Infinifilm menus frustratingly hard to navigate. If New Line is to adapt more of their releases with this line, hopefully they will figure out a better menu design.

New Line has produced an excellent DVD package for James Wong's Final Destination, despite the fact that beyond its novel premise the film is just another teen slasher flick of limited appeal. Presented in anamorphic widescreen, the film looks absolutely terrific, maybe as good as home cinema can get. The Dolby Digital 5.1 Sound is impressive on a more subtle level, but is certainly never found wanting. Beyond the so-so theatrical trailer and some DVD-ROM features, there are some fine extras on this disc. Of the two featurettes, the 20-minute study of a real-life psychic is the less interesting, although it may be of real value to anyone interested in the subject. The 13-minute look at test screenings is more compelling, illustrating with humor the enormous bearing they can have on a movie's final edit. This ties in nicely with the inclusion in the deleted scenes section of a strangely sentimental alternate ending, which was passed over after test screenings in favor of the crowd-pleasing ending eventually used. The feature commentary by director Wong, producer Glen Morgan, editor James Coblentz, and (intermittently) writer Jeffrey Reddick is mainly standard fare, but with some good insight and interesting background (apparently Tobey Maguire was the first choice for Devon Sawa's role!). The commentary by Sawa and three of the other cast members is more light-hearted but actually quite dull. A third commentary of sorts is provided on the film's isolated score, with composer Shirley Walker offering a truly fascinating insight into the process of creating music for a motion picture. However silly Final Destination might be as a film, the presentation and content of this DVD are absolutely outstanding.
