My Brothers and I first got into Elvis thru our Aunt Valeria's old 45s at Grandma's house. They are all here except "Be-Bop-A-Lula" It is very good that they are NOT re-mixed. Same mix as the records, which is appropriate considering this is a collection of Elvis' #1 hits. The one extra track -from the 1968 TV comeback special- makes a nice addition, and a good end to a wonderful collection. The packaging is simple, but you have to love using a picture of Elvis' front hair wave to cover the CD as inside cover. At about .25 cents per song, the price is right also.
HEY Y'ALL - this is one JIM DANDY of a DVD !! Super long photo gallery is very nice, with lots of old photos, especially some nice Ruby Starr photos.Memorabilia section shows cool items also. The show itself is fantastic, but a little short. This version of the band was the best, with Jimmy Henderson throwing out some killer riffs. Check out his slide guitar work on "Jail Bait". The film is a little dark due to the poorly lit stage. Only 3 lighting stacks for the Royal Albert Hall stage. Also, there is no Ruby Starr here at all. Those negatives are more than made up for by the energetic performance of the band, as they tear thru many of their best songs. Lots of high-stepping struting from Jim Dandy fronts lots of good ole Southern Rock guitar boogie as BOA shows em how to do it. Lots of fun all around.
This is the last (or, assuming Iggy does future solo albums without the Stooges, and makes another great album, the lastest) great Iggy Pop solo album. Iggy in top form with top notch song writting and totally awesome band. If you have some Iggy stuff and are looking to add more - GET IT - this is way above Iggy's "average" work.. If you are starting to get into Iggy - GET IT - this is great place to start. If you are a long term Iggy fan and don't have - shame on you !! The hard rocking is really hard here, with "Boogie Boy" "Wild America" and "Sickness' leading the way. The ballads are genuine, touching at times. The "experimental" stuff like "Hate" and the title track are unique. Overall. every song is super on this well paced and quick moving disc. GET IT !!
At this point in the mid-1970s, Slade were certainly hitting high gear musically. The songwritting is more complex than before, with some nice changes of pace. The guitar sounds wonderfully gritty. Loud lead vocals. of course !! The CD has 3 bonus tracks including the popular UK-only single "Raining in my Champayne". The highly under-rated original release quickly hit the cut-out bins and marked Warner Brothers Records last effort to break the band big in America. Ironically, it was also the start of several years of massive Slade popularity on the European mainland. The title track and "Do the Dirty" show Slade at it's hard rocking best while "Get on Up" and "L.A. Jinx" reflect the more complex arranging skills. Still, there are songs like "In for a Penny" that illustrate why Slade was always "too Brittish" for massive USA sales.
If I was stranded on a desert Island and could only have 3 Albums (I'm showing my age!!) they would be: 1. The Clash 2. The Clash 3. The Clash This UK version, of course. this was the way the LP was made, and has a continuity of sound the USA version does not. The remastering removes none of the raw - and I do mean RAW - production .... this is a plus. Joe Strummer's anger and passion come at you so fiercely that you can feel the spittle ejecting from the speakers as his raspy voice crys for justice in an unjust world. Surely, songs like "Career Opportunities" "Hate and War" and "Police and Thieves" are more relevant in today's world instead of less. If you get 1 Clash item ever, or for that matter 1 musical item ever, this is it !!! The penultimate in music with meaning.
This is an excellent DVD. Much better than I expected, and I had high hopes. This material is very strong - all great songs. The presentation and camera work are outstanding. The pacing of the show is well done, the show flows well, and the songs are so good, you don't think about the fact that many are fairly long songs. The hightlight, of course is the song H + H - super version of this fantastic track. The encore of Neon Knights is very well done.Every song here is very well done. All 4 guys very strong. Dio seems surprised at the enthusiastic audience reaction to the Dio-era only song list. If you any kind of Sabbath fan you should get this DVD!!!!
