Tracy's Reviews

Dimension's Scary Movie 3 disc is a strange and sometimes hilarious exercise in what happens when the right talent is handed down notes from the suits on not what to cut out, but add in. The DVD doesn't really lie -- the film in its original version was a mess. First things first, check out that 15-minute alternate ending in the Deleted & Extended menu! Where was that?...In the trash, where it deserves to be. Ordered to parody films that hadn't even come out yet, this finale is filled with out-of-nowhere riffs on everything from A Beautiful Mind to jaw-droppingly lame takes on The Hulk and, yes, even more on The Matrix Reloaded. This is where some of the footage in the first trailer went (not that you'd know from the DVD -- it wasn't included, thanks Dimension!). Switch on the commentary track to even hear the filmmakers dying from embarrassment as the train-wreck ending plays out with a crawl. Amazing enough, they tested this version on some poor souls in the theater! Not only that, but there's footage and interviews in the "Hulk vs. Aliens: Behind-the-Scenes" featurette that just proves how people really believed that this was going to be great. Ouch, indeed. The rest of the ten deleted scenes -- that's right, ten deleted scenes -- are mostly needless trash that just didn't work, though the Cindy Gets Fired scene turns out to be a gas. The commentary tracks are pretty fun, with jokes hurled left and right just as often as jeers and groans. The outtakes section is also good for a few laughs, with the rest of the extras including not one, but two making-of featurettes. Additionally, previews for the first three Osbourne season box sets are included, as is a Dimension promotional reel (again, no theatrical one for the main film). With a fine 2.35:1 widescreen image (also available in a separate full-screen version) and 5.1 Dolby Digital sound sure to rock the old entertainment system at home, this disc looks and sounds nice no matter what may be stinking on the screen. And since Scary Movie 3 is really best in spurts (especially during the non-8 Mile and The Ring moments), having it on DVD would make it easy to skip to the good stuff for some instant laughs.
