EdificeOptimus's Reviews

This box set contains the entire three-season run of the original Star Trek television series. Each episode is presented in the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.33:1. A healthy dose of supplemental materials are included. William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and Walter Koenig each offer a look at what life for former Enterprise crew members is like, reminiscences from a variety of people who worked on the show, and original marketing materials.

William Shatner as Captain James T. (R.? no) Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as [Lieutenant] Commander Spock have rightfully earned their places as the #9 and #21 most influential AFI TV characters of the 20th century respectively.
What's great about it: Text Commentary on "Trouble With Tribbles;" Helpful & Informative Special Features & Booklets
What's not so great: Subtitled in English; No Foreign Language Subtitles or Dubs
I would recommend this to a friend!

Funny and very danceable music. Highly enjoyable! I only wish I were allowed to play it in school on the regular.
What's great about it: 3 Bonus Tracks Are Cool, especially Calypso Remix of "Don't Matter;" "Put The Blame On Me"
What's not so great: I would hope the Deluxe Edition would be 2-disc with clean and dirty versions of the tracks
I would recommend this to a friend!

Company good CIA spy movie ... for TV

Interesting movie/miniseries. I wonder how much is historically accurated, and how much is a fabrication in historical fiction.
What's great about it: Decently written, good performances by Natasha McElhone, Chris O'Donnell, Alfred Molina
What's not so great: Not as hard hitting as "The Good Shepherd," Not as action-packed as "Bourne;" Not as suave as "James Bond."
I would recommend this to a friend!

Richard Linklater directs Jack Black in the winning comedy School of Rock, which comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film. English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, and Dolby Surround. A French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital 5.1. Both the audio and visual quality of the disc is solid. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Linklater and Black that is almost as entertaining as the film itself. The two are very comfortable together and actually reveal a great deal about the process of making the movie while making each other and the viewer laugh. A second commentary track has been recorded by a half-dozen of the kids who acted in the movie. They speak glowingly of Black, and it is obvious they had a great time making the film. While their comments may be short on any real information, their happiness and joy is fun to listen to. Other extras include a funny four-minute clip of Jack Black begging Led Zeppelin to allow the filmmakers to use "The Immigrant Song" in the movie (a ploy that was successful), a making-of featurette, and a video diary of the kids in the band attending the film's screening at the Toronto Film Festival. Those with a DVD-ROM drive can access Dewey Finn's history of rock. This is a strong disc from Paramount that rocks as hard as any fan of the film could possibly hope.

School of Rock Somewhat Funny; Too Unrealistic
on April 28, 2008

"School of Rock" was definitely a fun movie to watch and a funny movie to laugh at. As a substitute teacher, I have been told that I resemble Jack Black, but I fail to see the resemblance. Our senses of humor differ, but even more importantly, I could actually and have actually taught many of the subjects that his character Dewey could not address as a substitute.
The movie is worth watching at some point.
What's great about it: Funny, fun, worthwhile kid's programming
What's not so great: Unrealistic depiction of educational system, particularly substitute teaching

The space opera's third season picks up a short time after the Colonial fleet was forced to abandon the bulk of humanity on the harsh but habitable New Caprica as the Cylons descended upon the defenseless settlement. While the commanders of Galactica and Pegasus, Adm. William Adama (Edward James Olmos) and Cdr. Lee "Apollo" Adama (Jamie Bamber), clash over the admiral's plan to rescue those left behind, resistance guerrillas led by Col. Saul Tigh (Michael Hogan) use suicide bombers to strike back at the Cylon occupiers on New Caprica. The occupation produces heroes, traitors and hostages-the last best personified by Capt. Kara "Starbuck" Thrace (Katee Sackhoff), who becomes a Cylon's love interest. Captive Cylon Sharon (Grace Park) redeems herself when she agrees to help Adm. Adama rescue the citizens of New Caprica. While the rescue operation unfolds, defrocked president Gaius Baltar (James Callis) locates Sharon's Cylon-human baby and accepts an invitation from D'Anna (Lucy Lawless) to join the Cylons. The large-scale rescue proves successful, but the occupation leaves emotional scars on the survivors, particularly Starbuck and Tigh, who stir up dissent within the ranks. Adm. Adama endeavors to heal his crew with a boxing event that ends up being cathartic for Starbuck and Apollo. While trying to prove his worth to the Cylons, Baltar helps D'Anna probe the mythical "final five" humanoid Cylons-who have become lost to the rest of their race-an investigation that doesn't sit well with the Cylon Cavil (Dean Stockwell). A food shortage forces the Colonial fleet to traverse a dangerous passage to an algae planet, home to a mysterious temple that houses a veritable road map to Earth, which the Cylons also covet. The tragic loss of a troubled crewmate and a sensational trial onboard Galactica become game-changing milestones during the fleet's quest for Earth.

Insurgents & Suicide Bombers: Gutsiest TV Drama
on April 23, 2008

from Evansville, IN
As my good friend Yeit is quick to point out, the first four episodes of Battlestar Galactica Season 3 are quite compelling. Just consider the choice to have Tigh, Tyrol, and Anders command the insurgency of humans against cylons -- using suicide bombings and other forms of resistance. While I do not embrace guerrilla warfare, BSG is one of the few series, if any, that takes a serious look at the causes and effects of such a last resort measure.
... and the rest of the season [and series!] is solid, too!
What's great about it: Great effects, solid acting, serious look at guerrilla warfare & resistance
What's not so great: The menus of the DVD's do not include a scene-by-scene menu for each episode.

Great Rambo Facts & Action
on April 22, 2008

This collection only whet my appetite prior to seeing Rambo [IV]. Definitely a worthwhile set to own, whether you buy them separately on sale or altogether as a set.
Survival Mode comes endorsed by me, too. It is at least worth a look.
What's great about it: Good facts about Rambo, Trautman, and characters, Commentary by Sylvester Stallone for First Blood
What's not so great: If you do not like to be burdened with "Survival Mode," then switch it off, and you should be able to see it normally.
