Anime Gold

The colors are dry and glaring, but are consistant with the desert scenery. Trigun animation is not the best, but the character and weapon designs, as well as terrific story make up for it. There is a multitude of uniquely funny, chibi-style comic-releif, and some stunning close ups. The characters are hilarious, and the character development is excellent. There are also some very intriguing villains, and one of anime’s best anti-heroes, Nicholas D. Wolfwood. The music is not the greatest that I’ve heard, but it fits the scene and some of the score is quite pleasing. I definitely recommend Trigun to anyone who loves action and comedy.
...
I personally enjoy dubbed anime. Trigun is one of the better-dubbed animes that I’ve seen. There is some bad acting by one-shot characters, but the main characters are very well done, and that’s what counts. Actor, Johnny Yong Bosch, voices Vash. He perfectly portrays the transitional moods of his character with his silly, high-pitched shrieks and shrills, but he is able to put deep emotion into his voice. I could not imagine anyone else doing the voice of Vash the Stampede.
...
There is great plot, great theme, great emotion and great action. It’s just a GREAT anime, and is a MUST for any anime fan. GET THE ENTIRE SERIES!

Priceless!

Studio Ghibli’s “Whisper of the Heart” is probably the most different of any of the films they have put out. The setting is placed in present day Tokyo, and because it is based on a manga, the romance angle is the main plot instead of the usual adventure emphasis with romance mixed in. Following the shoujo (girl) anime style, there is no action. In that respect it is similar to “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Kiki’s Delivery Service”, two other great Studio Ghibli films that you should definitely pick up if you don’t already own them.
...
The story follows Shizuku, a middle school girl, who spends all her time reading fairy-tale books and writing lyrics to songs. She also spends her time wondering about Seiji Amasawa, the name of a boy that appears on every take out card in every book she’s borrowed from the library. When she finally meets him, he’s not what she expected or hoped he would be like. From there, hilarity ensues, and she discovers that he really is not as bad as she first thought.
...
It is incredibly sweet and completely ADORABLE! The art and music is gorgeous and the characters are down-to earth and easy to relate to. It is a great story and a great movie.

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie comes to DVD from Columbia TriStar with a widescreen transfer. Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound audio is presented in the original Japanese theatrical version, the fine English dub, or French stereo. Subtitles are available in English and French. The special features start out with two ten-minute featurettes. "From the Small Screen to the Big Screen" is made up of interviews about the production process with the director, character designers, and other crew members. "International Appeal: What's Not to Like?" features a discussion about the show's popularity, as well as a conversation with composer Yoko Kanno about her musical influences. Each individual character gets his or her own featurette, including a profile and interviews with the Japanese and English voice actors and ADR supervisor. The disc also includes conceptual artwork galleries, storyboard comparisons, theatrical trailers, and music videos for "Ask DNA" and "Gotta Knock a Little Harder." This disc is highly recommended for space cowboys everywhere.

Knocking on Heaven's Door Gives You Cowboy Bebop
on September 20, 2007

“Cowboy Bebop the Movie” (Originally called "Knocking on Heaven's Door")is a SPECTACULAR film. It is both funny and serious, contrasting Spike’s sarcastic one-liners and Ed’s eccentrics with some heavy flashbacks and near death experiences. Ed amuses with her antics, Spike amazes with his skills, Faye keeps the fan-boys happy, and Jet explains and complains in turn.
...
It has great plot that is well thought out and suspenseful, an awsome villain and mind-blowing action. There are shoot-outs, explosions and best of all, hand-to-hand combat Jet Lee style. (Spike is the BEST!) The animation is some of the best I’ve ever seen, with intense detail and correct proportions that give it an extremely life-like quality. Like wise the backgrounds are intricately designed and dramatically lighted to give the futuristic setting a sense of honesty and personality. The music, true to the Cowboy Bebop legacy, is gorgeous, with jazzy scores by Yoko Kano and the usual assortment of blues, jazz, and techno-pop tracks. All together, it is the perfect blend of wonderful art and great entertainment.
...
If you love Cowboy Bebop, anime in general, or even just smash action/suspense movies, this film is the PERFECT choice. It is the best anime movie ever, and one of my favorite movies of all time.

Amazed Again

THE SHINS...what thoughtful and refreshing music they produce. I can’t get enough of it.
....................................................................
This last album took a while longer to draw me in; at first, I was disappointed with the songs because they did not capture my attention as immediately as those of the past two CD’s. However a couple listens have completely remedied that. I have now become completely addicted to “Wincing the Night Away”.
....................................................................
They have continued the spiritual journey from “Chutes too Narrow”, their 2003 release, with wonderful songs composed with up-beat acoustic riffs and dreamy synthetic sounds.
BEAUTIFUL vocals, great beats and lyrics…The Shins never cease to amaze me.

Master animator Hayao Miyazaki directs this tale about a former World War I flying ace who is also a pig. Slouching towards middle age, Porco Rosso makes his living by flying about in his bright red bi-plane and fighting sky bandits who prey on cruise ships sailing the Adriatic. When he's not engaging in dogfights, this porcine pilot lives on a deserted island retreat. Porco Rosso was once a strapping young man, but after his entire squadron was wiped out, he is mysteriously transformed into a pig. Rosso is defeated in a dogfight against a dashing American rival, who has been hired by the dastardly bandits. With his plane damaged, he finds a repair hangar near Milan run by an aging mechanic named Piccolo, and his spunky granddaughter Fio. Initially skeptical of her mechanical prowess, Rosso is amazed when she and a legion of local women fix his plane. Soon, Porco Rosso is ready to battle his rival.

Expectations Dashed
on September 18, 2007

Porco Rosso, the ninth edition to my Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli collection, contains gorgeous scenery, wonderfully detailed animation with a style all its own, and those special elements, the young heroine, the curse and the wrinkled, old woman, specific to Director Hayao Miyazaki’s movies. It has a humorous, heart-warming cast and an incredible score composed by Joe Hisaishi that enhances the experience of the Italian/Mediterranean setting.
YET it is the weakest and least successful of his films. Throughout my first viewing, I kept excitedly asking myself, “How is he going to surprise me?” I guess I got what I wanted because I was surprised. It was completely different from any other ending that I’ve seen from his work. Instead of the normal happy ending where we see the results of the curse's removal, he ends it just before the final fight and chooses to skip forward a few years to have the heroine narrate the conclusion in retrospect. Leaving the ending up to the viewers’ imaginations might have been a good idea had the important subplot been developed. The film did not explain why, when or how Porco was transformed into a pig by a curse. Nor were the specifics of the curse revealed, weakening the overall plot and especially the ending. I expected the ending to resolve these things, but it left me sadly disappointed.
P.S. You only get to see Porco’s human face once! That disappointed me too. My shallow soul cries out for a handsome hero!

Could Be Better
on September 16, 2007

Jing King of Bandits could be alot better. It is a traveling style anime with no main plot, which is fine if more than one character is interesting and it has some substance. Jing King of Bandits only grazes the surface with a series of adventures in which the king of bandits steals something that no one else could ever logically steal. While Jing is quite an intriguing character, handsome, mysterious and resourceful, there is no information given about his past or training or incentives; and the anime is not interesting or clever enough to stand on its own without a character background or a unifying theme. I think the producers must have realized their mistake because they put out an OAV (Original Animated Video) that sheds some light on Jing’s past.
THE SERIES is all right if one is purely seeking entertainment, but as a valuable, thought provoking or satisfying use of time, it is seriously lacking. While there are some reflective attributes to the episodes, they fail to reach a depth of feeling that a similar style anime like Kino’s Journey does. It is, on the upside, not so morbid and depressing. The last three episodes do have a more unified feeling to them and a good set of characters. I just wish the whole series could have been that way

Killer Kitties and Bunches of Fun
on September 15, 2007

Azumanga Daioh is the anime I watch when I don’t want to think about anything in particular. It is an enjoyable if not random jumble of high school problems, daydreams and close friendships. Not only is it great entertainment, it is also good way to get a taste of Japanese culture.
THE STORY follows the adventures of Chiyo-chan, the ten year-old genius, Osaka, the airhead, Sakaki, the insecure animal-lover, Tomo, the obnoxious idiot, Yomi, the weight conscience smart girl, and Kagura the athlete, as they go through their three years of Japanese high school. Together they stem the tide of stressful exams, competitive field days and culture fests while dealing with a crazy homeroom teacher and a perverted professor. They also deal with their own problems: bust-sizes, killer cats, and an unskilled hand at rock-paper-scissors to name a few.
It is a cute, lighthearted study of realistic people with wild dreams. Look hard enough and you can find yourself in one or more of the characters. Their personalities clash and harmonize in turn, creating the hilarious mess that is Azumanga Daioh.
NOTE: You MUST watch this anime in Japanese! I usually like to watch animes in their dubbed form, but the acting and English voices for Azumanga Daioh are so horrendous that they ruin the whole experience. If you don’t already watch subbed anime, now’s the time to start.
(The translation is well done and the subtitles are easy to follow…it’s a great series).

Another Spectacular Album from The Shins!
on September 13, 2007
Posted by: babyonion
Their vocabulary and turns of phrase are as clever and unique as ever, and the band’s acoustic style is again filled with beautiful harmonies and fast-paced rhythms.
I found that the lyrics of “Chutes Too Narrow”, while retaining their eccentric qualities, were easier to follow than those of the first album, “Oh Inverted World”. At first glance they seem a bit random, but an understanding of the words as a whole came to me after I thought about them for a while.
They are playful and meaningful at the same time. The phrase “…I fell into a winter slide, and ended up the kind of kid who goes down chutes too narrow, just eking out my measly pies…” from the song “Young Pilgrims” is just one example of the poetic quality of the lyrics. They show contemplation of the mysteries of human nature and societal discord as well as a questioning of the spiritual standards of society.
This album is an asset to any musical library.

Gotta Love The Shins!
on September 12, 2007

The Shin’s first album “Oh Inverted World” is WONDERFUL!
The Shins have an energetic style that permeates even their more mellow songs. The album is riveting from start to finish, from the first whistle to the last acoustic riff.
Their songs have incredible harmonies and an exciting foot-tapping beat.
I love the poetic allure of the lyrics, which are bizarre and at first glance, random, and enjoy puzzling over their meanings or wondering whether they even have a meaning.
I highly recommend it.

Fruits Basket
OVERALL:
The colors and scenes are very delicate and aesthetically pleasing, and the setting is light and uplifting. The animation can be somewhat simple at times, but in a very pleasing way. Hilarious chibis and “ka-ching wipes” populate each episode, adding to the comic feeling of the show.
The main characters of Fruits Basket are so varied and beautifully developed, that one is forced to love them all. There is a sweetness and elegant innocence surrounding them, (excluding Shigure, Ayame, and Black Hatsuharu, who mainly provide comic relief and innuendo), that gives one a happy, warm feeling inside. The music is alternately adorable and wistful throughout, and the ending and opening songs are lovelier every time I hear them. Fruits Basket is one of my all-time favorite animes. It is the most adorable one by far, and I recommend it to everyone.
PLOT AND THEME:
The story begins with Toru Honda, an orphaned yet optimistic girl, living in a tent in the woods. The gloriously funny circumstances of the show begin when she discovers that she lives “next door” to the Shoma family. Yuki Shoma, her classmate, and the “Prince” of her high school invites her to live with them, and she agrees to work as their housekeeper in exchange for food and board. It does not take her long to discover that there is something very odd about them. Due to a mishap, she learns that the Shoma family is under the Zodiac curse. If any Shoma member of the zodiac is hugged by a person of the opposite gender, he or she will be transformed into a zodiac animal.
There is very little action, except for a few fistfights, but the thematic content is wonderful. The lessons are pertinent to everyday life, and they are portrayed in such a tasteful manner, one cannot help but be touched deeply. Each episode is a perfect mixture of deep insight and light, happy fun, while providing glimpses of Japanese culture and the daily struggles of both adolescents and adults. It is a true study of relationships and character development; the struggles of the characters can be very painful, but they cause introspection. Understanding others and one’s self is the main focus of Fruits Basket.
