Star Trek Into Darkness is an action-packed, well-acted juggernaut of a movie. If you're an old Star Trek fan, you'll recognize it is kind of a remake of the best Star Trek movie made. This makes it distracting for me. I like nods, but not everything lifted and re-used. It's not a travesty like some say, but could have been so much more, especially since they've already introduced the characters so they could do anything. Stellar picture and sound, good extras but this movie was a massive cluster-f for extras since every retailer has an "exclusive" including the idiotic idea to put the Director's Commentary on Itunes.
My Best Buy number: 2017193287
What's great about it: Production is top notch, acting great
What's not so great: Re-hashed story, too much thrown in
This movie is loads of fun if you don't expect the Guillermo del Toro that did Pan's Labyrinth, but more like a cross between the GDT of Blade 2 and Hellboy. The amount of work and detail is fantastic, just don't expect the dialogue to be rooted in Shakespeare's Hamlet. Big monsters, big mechs, and a big budget. Crank the speakers and enjoy. Extras are nice and thick like all of GDT's movies.
My Best Buy number: 2017193287
What's great about it: A modern b- monster movie
What's not so great: not exactly Guillermo del Toro high art
Robocop is a perfect movie, with satirical and politically relevant themes that still hit home today. It also has some fantastic action, gruesome violence, and is infinitely quotable. This new transfer is as good as its ever been. Previous transfers were really poor, so much that I thought I accidentally put the dvd in. This new transfer, while not Terminator-good, is still fantastic. I really wish the sound was a bit more explosively dynamic, but I think it's as good as it will get without tinkering with the design.
My Best Buy number: 2017193287
What's great about it: Fantastic new transfer plus complete extras
What's not so great: Could probably use more in-depth making-ofs
I usually get my PC games on Steam sales for cheap, but unfortunately Minecraft almost never goes on sale. Begrudgingly, I bought me and my daughter copies, and it is definitely worth it. We play Survival, so we enjoy gathering resources, creating things, and fighting off creatures. Setting up a server to work online (not LAN) is a real pain though. This game is the ultimate Indie Game success story, with very few people creating it and the world loving it. It does take some research to learn about things like crafting and recipes though, but as an old-school pc gamer I'm used to research and modding.

What's great about it: Creating, surviving, playing
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is great not just because it has action, not just because it has heart, not just because it has the best villain, and not just because it has parallel literary references, but because it has all of these things. You can try comparing this to Star Trek Into Darkness [spoilers] since that movie is a loose remake of this one, but they are different animals. The resounding theme in STII is old age. This crew has HAD their 5+ year mission. Khan is a passionate villain bent on revenge. These two differences heavily separate this from the new film. Extras are decent but understandably light. This looks like a quick cash Blu-ray, with crummy cover art and no Director's Cut, but it's cheap and the best the movie has ever looked or sounded.

What's great about it: Best Star Trek film ever
What's not so great: Needs more extras, optional Director's Cut
Scott Pilgrim vs The World is a modern, self-aware, experimental action/romance/comedy for the video game generation. It's kind of like a musical except instead of musical numbers it's crazy choreographed fight sequences. The movie will either "click" with you or not. I dug it, and I thought I was sick of Michael Cera's "schtick" in movie/TV but it works. Bluray is packed with great A/V and tons of extras. Love that Brandon Routh got to fly with superpowers again!
My Best Buy number: 2017193287
What's great about it: full commitment to its asthetic
What's not so great: sometimes the "style" wears on you
Kick-*ss is a good time. Good acting, good humor, violent action. I checked out the Mark Millar comic after watching, which has some deviations. The main one being Big Daddy's background, while being less realistic than the movie's it's just a really cool reveal. Bluray is packed, with great video, audio, and extras. Looking forward to the sequel.
My Best Buy number: 2017193287
What's great about it: Hard-R action-comedy done well
What's not so great: spotty cgi, standard "ex-cop" out for revenge
As a long-time Star Trek fan that loves TOS, I still like this update. Star Trek lost its "teeth" quite awhile ago so this was a welcome change. There's a lot of love in it despite looking so different. Most of the casting is spot-on, although the villain's character could use some work. Some great extras and good commentaries. That intro involving Kirk gets me every time.

What's great about it: An actiony update well directed
What's not so great: Some plot holes and somewhat weak villian
Not too much to say here. A remake of a not-too-old movie I guess for people that hate subtitles, everything is accomplished pretty well. The surprise is Richard Jenkins, who I did not even recognize in the movie. He's always fantastic but really delivers here. Sound and picture good, decent amount of extras.
Peter Jackson's first dip into big-budget FX before Lord of the Rings, The Frighteners is a mixed bag of wacky ghost humor and rather grisly violence. Jackson said he always wanted it lighter but the studio pushed for a more violent Halloween picture. Michael J Fox is fantastic, crossing the line from comedy to emotional drama perfectly. As for the disc, boy this thing will give your sound system a workout! Great playful score too. Some of the CGI is dated, but it still works. And the real treat is the 4+ hour documentary on the making-of.

What's great about it: AV quality and massive documentary
What's not so great: Killed the classic cover art of the creepy wall face
