CuteBoiBrian's Reviews

Elvira, TV Scream Queen of the 1980s, finally gets her motion picture break in the horror/comedy Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. Unfortunately, this disc from Anchor Bay is not as heavily stacked as our hero. Sporting a brand-new 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark definitely looks better than any other version out in stores. For the first time, fans of the comedy flick can see their beloved Elvira in a beautifully rendered widescreen edition that looks excellent. Though the image sometimes sports some grain and dirt, overall this transfer by Anchor Bay is very well done and extremely clean. The colors are bright and natural with all blacks dark and solid. A very small amount of edge enhancement is also present, but it is not overly intrusive. Audio is presented in a newly created Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. The audio portion of this disc is not nearly as impressive as the video portion, and though well mixed, the 5.1 is not really needed for a film of this size and budget. Surround features were rarely utilized, and the movie tends to be mainly dialogue/music-driven until its action-packed climactic end scene. Overall, the dialogue, music, and effects for Elvira: Mistress of the Dark are all very clear, with absolutely no distortion. Something for fans to "howl" about is a lack of any substantial extra material. Anchor Bay has seen fit only to slap on two theatrical trailers and a Cassandra Peterson biography that is relatively short and uninteresting. If nothing else, a commentary track by Elvira would have been an absolute scream to hear. As it is, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark looks and sounds good, but could have been so much more. If nothing else, take a look at Elvira: Mistress of the Dark to see her deranged poodle with a pink mohawk and spiked collar. Terrifying!

Elvira is super funny, she brings her funny puns and appealing revealing fun to the big screen in this 80's cult classic film. A must have for any Elvira fan.
