Brings Back Memories
on June 5, 2009

The most memorable moments were when the famous "Give me an "F" speech was recited by the audience, Joan Baez's antiwar ballad, Jimi Hendrix's dazzling guitar performance, and many more. We were in the midst of a very unpopular and unnecessary war where young American men and some women were dying needlessly. The lyrics in some of the music made a strong political statement to all of those who listened. It was these and other artful messages that lead us out of that dark period in our history. In spite of all of the trouble caused by a massive invasion of patrons for this concert, it did have somewhat of a positve impact on promoting my favorite music for the time and it influenced some positive politcal changes.
I recommend that if anyone watches this video, they should also watch the video on the 1967 Montery Pops Festival (criterion collection). This is where concerts of this type began.
What's great about it: Cinematography and live entertainment
What's not so great: The devastating impact this event had on those involved with its support and coordination

Poor example of a classics remake
on April 22, 2009

I was very disappointed that the plot for this movie did not stick to that of the original classic movie. The acting, special effects, and the imagery were very good; however, they did not make up for a disappointing theme and/or plot.
The main theme of the original classic was centered on the violence in the world at that time. The threat of nuclear war being extended into space was something that Klatu's federation of planets could not tolerate. Klatu's mission was to communicate with world leaders to make peace with one another and to stop all world violence, first of all, and then back that up with the ultimatum stating that if earth continued on its present course of violence it would be reduced to a burned out cinder. The original character Klatu was an exterrestrial human being and not an alien lifeform living in a cloned human form.
This new version changes all of that for the worse by making it a political statement about the earth's enviornmental problems rather than the message it originally intended to convey. I strenously object to these changes and I feel that it is a tragic mistake to remake classics for this purpose.
I perfer that all of these classic movies be remade in a manner that is true to the orginal plot without remaking them into a comedy or as some sort of politcal statement, contrary ot its original script.
There are several recent original movies which have focused my attention on the urgent status of our enviornment and my favorite one is "The Day After Tommorrow". The enviornment message is for new movies.
This film maker had crossed the line when the plot and storyline departed from the orignal. In my opinion this movie is not a remake of the orignal movie and should not be counted as such. I'm sure that there are science fiction screen writers out there who could do a much better job of writing a better, more up-to-date, and more accurate version of the original "The Day the Earth Stood Still" rather than this newer Pseudo or counterfeit version.
My advice to Hollywood is that they should never butcher or desecrate a classic film in this manner ever again.
What's great about it: The acting and the bonus DVD
What's not so great: Most of everything else

THE BEST SCI-FI ACTION SERIES EVER
on February 4, 2009

Gene Roddenberry is the genius who started the original Star Trek series. Through his guidance and inspiration the Star Trek saga lives on through the newer talented actors, writers, and directors of "The Next Generation". I was very disappointed when "Next Generation"; "Deep Space Nine"; and "Voyager" ended because I still have a desire to see more adventures in the future. The Star Trek series "Enterprise" did not satisfy my thirst for more Star Trek because of its prequel format. Future sagas are more relevant to the series because they provide better continuity to the stories and to the characters involved in them. This is like reading a really good book with a cliffhanger ending. As I view each episode of "The Next Generation" I usually discover something that I had missed when I watch them again. Perhaps there are more talented actors, writers, directors, and producers out there who might be willing to resume these sagas through an new television series which begins again where the latest saga or motion picture ended.
What's great about it: AN IDEAL EXAMPLE OF A NEAR UTOPIAN FUTURE IN FANTASY
What's not so great: NOT ENOUGH GOOD STAR TREK; WE NEED MORE ADVENTURES

This One is a Keeper
on March 27, 2008

I like the way this movie portrays how dangerous it can be in a world where the neglience of some scientists can lead to Global disaster. The storyline is believable in all of its content.
Most of those living dead or zombie type movies portray monsters that are weak and have limited mobility. This one, however, portrays some infected people and animals as rabid and maniacal with intelligence, strength, speed, and agility along with a hunger for human flesh.
This movie reminds me of two other earlier films from the past called; The Omega Man (Charlton Heston); and The Last Man on Earth (Vincent Price). They are very similar in many ways. If you liked the earlier films; then you will surely like this one. I recommend this movie highly.
What's great about it: Great Story and Great Acting and fun to watch
What's not so great: None

Robinson Crusoe on Mars
on August 28, 2007

My father was a science fiction fan and he would take me to the theaters to see many new features of this type during the late fifties and the early sixties. Robinson Crusoe on Mars was one of the best science fiction movies I had ever seen at that time. there was only one earlier title that impressed me as much; and that was Forbidden Planet. The special effects were, also, very impressive for the time and the story line in this feature seemed very real, and very believable in many ways. In comparison to other movies of the period this one is still as impressive as it was when I was a boy. Most of the others of that period seem kind of corny, now that I'm a middle-aged man.
I've been waiting for this movie to be released since the first VCR's came on the market. I can't describe how many letters and inquiries I've made, over many years, trying to find this movie.
I believe that the reason this movie took so long to be released was because of shallow-minded critic's who drove people away from the box office because of their inaccurate and biased ratings.
I have one thing to say to Criterion; and that is Thank you, very, very much for making my day and I would, also like to say shame on all those people who kept this "gem of a movie" from us for all of these years.
I look forward to seeing the Criterion version as soon as it is released, and, perhaps comment further.
Based on other Criterion movies in my collection, I am sure that they've done great job in restoring it to its original quality with a few bonuses to boot.
This movie deserves to, finally, be displayed and available for purchase on store shelves along with all of the other new releases and not as some segregated special order item from some wherehouse or mail order business. A classic movie, such as this, should be respected for what it is and displayed for sale accordingly.
