At last.......The original Battlestar on Blu
on May 23, 2013

This version is the U.S. release version of the 1978 movie (released in U.S. in 1979) The main difference being that Starbuck and Cassi's scene in the launch tube was changed due to the outcry from the Canadian prudes...LOL. The video I not (as# grainy as one would expect. The audio is very crisp and was remixed for Blu Ray using the same sound effects system that was used to create the "Sensurround" affect that was only used in a handful of Universal films. The VHS tape I have is in dolby stereo, ironically the DVD is in mono. My only gripe about the audio, although being wonderfully remastered in DTS, why couldn'tthey go for the full 5.1 as they did with the DVD series. Bonus features are lacking, as there are none. Perhaps on a future blu ray series release. It would nice to see the original ABC promos/bumpers. For those who like seeing those old trailers, you'll be disappointed. If memory serves, there never was an actual trailer for the movie #at least not for the 1979 release# There were several different 30 second TV spots. All of the mentioned promotional material you can see on youtube. Maybe Mr. Larson and Universal will release a series set #Just BSG, no G80# and give us some never before released goodies. Or perhaps even the 12 telefilms that were repackaged Galactica episodes. They never played those in my city. I would love to see them...but that's a story for another time. Shell out the $15 at Best Buy. #as of this writing, there were approx. 8 copies sent to each store but the bestbuy.com had placed them on backorder, currently a BB exclusive but will be in wider release this summer.
What's great about it: HD Conversion is surprisingly very good
What's not so great: No bonus materials

Best Episodes of the One of the Best 80s series...
on June 22, 2011

Just picked up this 2 disc set today. For the most part, the episodes are exactly identintical to the season sets that they are from. I tend to disagree with some of the selections for best episodes but they are still very good. What's different about this set is that for the first time, the two hour pilot and the 2 hour 2nd season episodes are actually presented in their 2 part syndicated 2 parts, including recaps from the previous part. The final episodes Resolutions Parts 1 and 2 also seems to be from the syndicated airing as on the original 8th season, I believe there is no recap from part 1 as both part 1 and part 2, though shown in 2 parts on the same night, whearas on this set the there is a recap. The episodes are: Pilot (Don't Eat The Snow in Hawaii, Part 1 and 2) in 2 parts, Season 2 - Memories Are Forever in 2 parts, and from Season 4 Home from the Sea, on disk 2, From Seasons 5 - 7, respectively Blind Justice, Kona Winds, and the final season episode Limbo (which was at one time thought to be the final episode) The final 2 episodes of this 10 episode set is the 2 part finale from Season 8. I kind of wished they would have instead put the syndicated version of the crossover episode, Novel Connection (crossed over with Murder She Wrote) where they re-edited the story to finish in 1 hour as opposed to concluding the next weekt on Murder She Wrote. The single version is only available on a now, rare hard to find VHS copy. There were 2 crossover stories, Season 1 has the 2 part story beginning as Ki'is Don't Lie on Magnum (from season 3) concluding as Diamonds Aren't a Girl's Best Friend on season 2 of Simon and Simon. The 3rd season set of Magnum P.I. includes the alternate version that told the story in 1 hour. Maybe these best of collections will sell well and Universal will release a 2nd volume with the missing version of Novel Connnection and the remaining syndicated versions of the 2 part versions of the 2 hour episodes. Other shows in the best of series are: A-Team, Knight Rider, and Miami Vice, all of which feature the pilot and final episodes of those series. Maybe they will do a 70's version where we can finally get a copy of the actual Buck Rogers pilot, and not the movie version.
Video and Sound quality are excellent. The disk is absent of extras but they are not really necessary for this set thus I gave it an average score.
What's great about it: Great price for 10 hours of Magnum.
What's not so great: Some may not agree with episode choice.

This release from the classic sci-fi action series The Bionic Woman includes all 13 episodes from the show's first season, kicking off the story with Jamie, a school teacher who lost her memory, but gained a number of bionic abilities, that she will soon discover are more powerful than she could imagine.

The bionic wait is over...finally

I was very excited when I heard that both Bionic Woman and The Six Million Dollar Man were announced in summer, for a fall DVD release. The Bionic Woman will be released in 3 season sets (1 in fall, the other 2 later in 2011) and the complete Six Million Dollar Man (available exclusively from Time-Life video). This set, is NOT in widescreen as described, nor is it in AC-3. But it is in Dolby Digiital Mono. The original aspect ratio is 1.33:1 (aka 4:3 Standard) The quality is excellent considering that the age of the show is almost 35 years. I previosuly owned the UK versions of seasons 1 and 2 (season 3 was never released in UK with exception of a few single episodes) The UK versions did not include any extras but both the Six Million Dollar Man set from Time-Life and so far, season 1 of BW will include the crossover episodes between the series. This set features all season 1 episodes, beginning with, Welcome Home, Jaime Part 2 ( Part 1 was actually an episode of Six Million Dollar Man) The version included on this set is the syndicated version and opens as a BW episode. Other extras includes The original Bionic Woman story and the Return of the Bionic Woman story (double episodes) Both will be included on the SMDM set as well, the SMDM set versions may include commentary by Kenneth Jonhson, absent on this set.
What's great about it: Finally relased and uncut
What's not so great: Only season 1 available at this time.

BOND IN SPACE.......
on March 27, 2009

For Your Eyes Only was the next movie in the series as mentioned in the credits for 1977's Spy Who Loved Me ( hopefully available sometime this year in Blu Ray) but with the success of Star Wars, the Bond producers said that we need to put Bond in Space.....In fact that was the tagline on one of the posters. This DVD release coincides with the 30th anniversary of the film that brought Moore back to the screen and his rival from Spy Who Loved Me, Richard Keil reprised his role as "Jaws" Why that movie wasn't released first????? The entire sequencing of releases boggles the mind but oh well.... The films plot was simple but still fun to see. New DVD features include more documentaries than were on previous releases and a remastered widescreen version of the trailer ( 2.35:1) as opposed to the previous 16 x 9 release. The only problem is that I have an old tape with all the Bond trailers through A View to A Kill and there was a different version of the trailer and I have never seen it again adn the tape I have is so old it is not watchable but I do remember an entirely different version, perhaps that was the teaser....anyway besides that, the extras are great, for what they are. The 1080P presentation is great and the sound is awesome and this is a great bond to hear in 5.1 ( 7.1 if you have it).
What's great about it: Its Bond....
What's not so great: Missing one of the trailers /Price

HD Transfer the best for a great Bond film.

The movie has always been one of the best Bond films. It created a lot of attention by exploiting the myth that if a body was covered entirely by paint, that the skin would cause the body to suffocate and lead to death.. This was disproven. The imporatnt thing about this film is that it shows that the restoration process is getting better and better. The extras are identical to the ones that are simultaneously released on Standard DVD's but the DTS enhancement that is not as great on the SDs is far superior. The trailer for the film is not only fully restored, but it is presented for the first time I believe, in the 1.85:1 (16x9) ratio, not 4:3 as on previous releases and with grainy image. The overall image is great. I did not notice any grainy spots on the image and the 1080P looks awesome. I purchased it in the 3 volume set that also includes Moonraker, and World is Not Enough
What's great about it: HD, Fully Restored color and sound
What's not so great: The suggested retail price

Let's hope the rumors are true.

Okay, the Blu ray discs are not out yet. But if the rumors are true then this will be one of the first sets to include a new digital 7.1 soundtrack. Only a few select titles, including recent Disney releases have the 7.1 soundtrack so this is great news for those who really want to test their systems. In addition to the remastered digital soundtrack, it is reported that all six films will be presented in widescreen and in their original theatrical length. That means, no extra or extended scenes ( ST TMP, 2 and 6) and for the first time on any video format, Star Trek VI will be presented in the 2.35:1 widescreen as opposed to the 1.85:1 that is the current available widescreen format . For Star Trek - The Motion Picture, this will also be the first time the original 132 minute version has been released on a DVD format as it first appeared in 1979. In 1980, more scenes were added and the 2001 2 DVD set was a directors version, which was closer to the original in length but had updated special effects. This version is not yet, and may not ever be, scheduled for a Blu Ray release as the updated special effects were done in digital, but in Standard Definition. The original TV series, which comes out in April (Season 1) on Blu Ray, will include the original and the New High Definition Special Effects. I am a movie "purist" and was happpy when the original theatrical versions of Star Wars was released along with the Special Editions. It will be nice to see the Star Trek films in their original release form, it will also put to rest any rumors of a supposed 3 hour version of Star Trek III. If the info from Paramount video is accurate, these are the original theatrical versions. The only unfortunate thing is that none of titles will be released individually at this time. Hopefully Mr. Lucas and Mr. Jackson will release their films in this format soon, and in the 7.1 sound format, and while they are at it, lets see the first 3 Indiana Jones films in Blu Ray as well.
What's great about it: Finally a great series on the best format out there so far.
What's not so great: Titles are not being released individually.

Good movie, NOT Disney’s best-ONLY FAIR package
By CKCSWHFFAN from home
In the down years for Disney animation after Walt passed away.
The first film is fine, nothing outstanding about it. Only notable for Bob Newhart voice talent.
There are quite a few extras on the discs, nothing outstanding. No Making of for the first film but you would not need one really for this film since not the top of Disney films.
And, I have always wondered WHY WAS THE SEQUEL MADE? Best part of that unnecessary sequel is having the late John Candy voice talent. It was unnecessary, the first film was not a major hit, so why this sequel?
Now, Disney is now going cheap on blu ray packages. For the last few years they have been bending over backwards to promote blu rays, but here as they did with the Pocahontas package & Aristocats packages we get plain jane discs with no artwork on them.
So, these are good Disney movies, certainly not the best. Only fair package as Disney goes cheap again.

A few facts are wrong here......
August 23, 2012
Um, actually this was more succesful than this reviewer reports. It held the record for Best Opening Weekend for over 9 years (source: IMBD.COM - dethroned by An American Tail) and made almost $49,000, 000 in its initial run, which back in 1977, was not bad. It was also received a nomination for an academy award for best song. Maybe not popular as other Disney hits, it was still a very popular title. I do agree that packaging could be better and the non-printed DVD is the same one they release in the DVD only and/or DVD/Blu Ray conbos (basically the same as a Blu Ray combo but instead of a BD case, its in a DVD case)
