For those who wrote-off Marcy Playground as a one-hit wonder with their 1997 debut CD, you will be very suprised by 'Leaving Wonderland....' - this CD is the best piece of work of MP's career. Despite the lashing that MP takes from the media, they put out some of the most uniform and likable CDs of the past 10 years. Listening to 'Leaving Wonderland....' is therapeutic, with it's great melodies and intricate guitar arrangements. I honestly can not quit listening to this CD - it is highly recommended. Marcy Playground is finally on tour again; catch one of their shows.
What's great about it: Best piece of work of career
What's not so great: The wait since their last CD - 2004
'Loyalty' falls far short of expectation when compared to 'Robbers & Cowards'. Tracks 1 thru 4 and 6 are well written and vocally melodic presented songs. The remaining 8 tracks of the CD range anywhere from bland piffle with little focus to containing downright harsh wailing vocals that say very little - some of the tracks I would go as far as to say are annoying and I can not listen to them. The musicianship behind the songs is good; the songwriting (lyrics) and vocals are weak.
This long awaited solo CD of Stephen's, whom has mostly been a producer until now, could be the best reggae since Bob himself. I highly recommend this CD so much that I have purchased and shipped additional copies of it to 1 family member and 3 different friends. Prepare to be swept away to the tropics and feel as though you may never return - there are excellent songs here that fit the day time scene (Mind Control, Hey Baby, Lonely Ave, Inna Di Red) and night time scene (You're Gonna Leave, Let Her Dance) of that latitude. This is the perfect companion CD to Bob's 'Legend' CD. Enjoy!
