huge horror fest fan!! i was told this movie was a waste of money, but when i watched it i thought it was actually good. these kinds of movies not everybody likes it takes a person who likes cheap made films but are still good. it was a little slow at the begginning but it picked up and turned out to be a great movie.
What's great about it: it was all good
What's not so great: nothing

Unfairly swept away in the massive wake of The Sixth Sense when it was originally released at the box office a mere month after M. Night Shyamalan's breakout hit, David Koepp's masterfully creepy adaptation of Richard Matheson's supernatural mystery has found something of a second life on the home-video market, and gets the royal treatment in this release from Lions Gate Home Entertainment. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, the image is crisp and clear throughout -- sporting solid blacks, spot-on skin tones, and perfectly balanced colors that are bold and vibrant without becoming oversaturated. A variety of audio options are also sure to please, no matter what choice the viewer makes, with the DTS-ES mix, in particular, offering a fantastic mix that truly manages to work its way under the viewer's skin. Director Koepp certainly understands the importance of sound as an element to put viewers in a remarkable state of unease, and this track is a prime example of the effectiveness of a supremely well-done audio mix. Once viewers have had a chance to watch the feature, Lions Gate offers them an impressive amount of extras, which stand in stark contrast to the previous, relatively bare-bones DVD release. This disc may also impress horror fans by offering what may perhaps be the creepiest menu screen around (which, although tricky to navigate at times, captures the eerie, unearthly tone of the film perfectly). Koepp's audio commentary track is always interesting, with the humble director frequently pointing out his shortcomings, making note of inspiration given to him by fellow directors Brian De Palma and Steven Soderbergh, and offering great insight into both the characters and special effects. A making-of segment clocks in at just over 20 minutes, including interviews with the director, actors, and producers and ending with a promise from the director that he will scare you one way or another. Though some may question the absence of book author Matheson in this segment, the former Twilight Zone writer shows a keen understanding of the hypnosis process in "The Mind's Eye: Beneath the Trance" -- which also includes an interview with hypnotherapist Dr. Marc Schoen. Parapsychologist Dr. Larry Montz weighs in with a particularly spooky tale of a true-life case that was eventually solved with a little help from the other side in "Sight of Spirits: Channeling the Paranormal," with brief special effects and production design featurettes offering interviews with visual effects supervisor Casey Cannon and production designer Nelson Coates. Deleted scenes are a bit dark and really offer nothing more to the film, and "Behind the Scenes/Final Shot Comparisons" offers a peek at the filming in action and an interesting side-by-side look at the shoot and the final product. Three screen tests take viewers behind the scenes for makeup and movement tests, with Moist's video for the song "Breathe" wrapping things up nicely.

The underwhelming League of Extraordinary Gentlemen makes its way to home theaters with 20th Century Fox's widescreen edition DVD. With its brilliant 2.35:1 picture and 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound, the disc is nothing short of spectacular as it showcases the film's glorious production values and lush levels of sound design. Though technically splendid, the extras, on the other hand, tend to be a bit of a let down. The disc is fairly loaded with bonus features that give the viewer a nice overview of the production, but with no juicy mentions of the widely publicized spats between star Sean Connery and director Stephen Norrington (which ended in the screen legend literally taking over the editing room in the final stages), the overtly positive "spin" on the behind-the-scenes work becomes more than questionable. Still, for a film that is mostly known for its eye candy, the detailed sections on the rest of the production make for some fine coverage of the artisans behind the camera. Split into three different areas, the disc's special features include six featurettes in the Assembling the League section, 12 deleted and extended scenes in the Deleted Scenes area, and two full-length audio commentary tracks in the Commentaries section. At almost an hour in total length, the featurettes cover everything from Jackie West's costuming to the film's miniature work, with equal time also given to the producer's link to the comic's originator, Alan Moore (their second adaptation after From Hell). The best of the bunch details Steve Johnson's incredible makeup effects that helped realize original artist Kevin O'Neill's hulking vision of Mr. Hyde, played by Jason Flemyng. The British actor can also be found joking around with the Invisible Man himself, Tony Curran, on the first of two commentary tracks. Sadly, Curran's hilarious Sean Connery impersonations are interrupted time and time again by producer Don Murphy's obnoxious outbursts at the fans that questioned some of the more ridiculous story line changes (courtesy of the track's intercutting of three separate recordings from the film's two producers and actor Shane West). There aren't too many great producer commentaries out there and Murphy goes a long way here to prove to you why. The second track is a technical commentary consisting of a costume/makeup/visual effects tag team track, most of which lengthily expands on the behind-the-scenes talk in the featurettes. Finally, the disc presents a wealth of deleted and extended scenes, though there's no sign anywhere of the more graphic scenes Norrington was forced to cut to get the PG-13 rating. Considering the film's poor box office, it's understandable that the studio would want to put out a more family-friendly disc, so it seems the original vision of the film (and the story behind it) will have to wait for another edition. In the meantime, you get a pristine presentation of the theatrical cut and some nice behind-the-scenes production work with this release.

The DVD of this Alice in Wonderland-like children's film comes with four bios/filmographies, each two screens in length, a behind-the-scenes featurette of fuzzy audio and visual quality, and three theatrical trailers. Although presented as widescreen anamorphic (2:35:1 ratio) with dual-layered, English, two-channel Dolby Surround, the picture looks slightly grainy in places and a faint hiss persists in the audio background throughout the film. The puppet animations look and sound impressively lifelike and highly detailed. Also included are English and Spanish subtitles and a small three-fold booklet containing creation and production notes.
