American Outlaws gallops onto DVD with a slew of special features that starts with a commentary by director Les Mayfield, co-writer John Rogers, and editor Michael Tronick, and ends with artwork that includes storyboards, costumes, and blueprints. Other features include cast and crew biographies and filmographies, two deleted scenes, stills, a publicity gallery that includes a teaser trailer, theatrical trailer, TV spots, and a photo gallery of American Outlaw along with Morgan Creek DVD promos of Ace Ventura, Chill Factor, The In Crowd, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, True Romance, and Young Guns II. The 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is gorgeous, while the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, offered in both English and French, accentuates every wallop and whistle in this action adventure. Subtitles include English, French, and Spanish. Also of note is an easter egg that allows you to hear the various guns used in the film. To access the hidden option select "special features" from the main menu, then highlight "main menu" and right-click to highlight a gun. Press "enter." Finally, the most informative and entertaining bonus material on this DVD is the behind-the-scenes featurettes: "The Making of American Outlaws" (nine minutes), "Creating the Old West" (six minutes), "How to Be an Outlaw" (five minutes), and "Costuming the Cowboy" (five minutes) with commentary by costume designer Luke Reichle. Among other things, these close-ups detail how the Old West was created from scratch in Wimberly, TX, and gives viewers the delicious, guilty pleasure of watching a shirtless Colin Farrell at "cowboy camp." And if American Outlaws is anything, it's just that -- a guilty pleasure.
