The Real Details

The following review is based on the assumption that you are already familiar with this television series. This is my review of the new 40th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray season 1 set. I grew up watching this show on TV in syndicated formats. Many, many years ago I purchased the original DVD release of this and was pretty satisfied with it considering this is a show from the mid 70’s. So one day I was came across the show on Directv channel, INSP. While watching I noticed just how horrible the picture and sound was. Many scenes seam to suffer some sort of jaundice or something. Then I saw a commercial advertising the new Blu-ray release, so I went online to check it out. Cost was pretty cheap, so I ordered them. As a point of reference, I went back and looked over a random episode of my older DVD version and compared it to the same episode in the Blu-ray version and Yes there was a big difference. The overall picture quality on the Blu-ray was much better. The colors were more vibrant and the picture was much sharper. The sound was also much better and seamed much more accurate. Compared to the syndicated version I saw on TV these discs where the difference between night and day. I am not able to compare the 40th anniversary versions of dvd vs. Blu-ray, but since the price is pretty much the same, if you have a Blu-ray player, you should probably go that way. However, make sure your players firmware is up to date and expect a slight delay in load time (this is normal). As for the claim that these are the complete uncut original broadcast versions, is false. Yes most episodes have been restored to their full original length but others still have some small missing scenes. My guess is that the original footage was either lost or damaged and that they did the very best they could. I would further guess that this will be the last time this show will be released in any format for a very long time. I cannot see were they could really make more improvements. Perhaps some more bonus features for a cash grab, but that’s it. The bonus foot already included here is not substantial but it is very nice. For more bonus stuff just head over to youtube.

Worst Nickelback release so far

I bought this with hopes that it would be better than the last CD, but it's worse. This release swing more towards pop than Rock. If your a chic and like the sappy ballad songs, then you might like this, as there are plenty. But other than track 1, there really isn't anything that rocks. It's clear that they are shooting for a pop radio friendly market again only with more PoP. I much prefer the sound of Dark Horse instead. So after three listens, this is going on the shelf the never be heard again.

Pretty Good

Ok, so when this first came out, I bought the DVD. I liked the show and recently sold the DVD so I could have the Bluray in my collection. There really isn't much of a picture quality difference and the Bluray doesn't offer anything that the DVD doesn't. The performance was top notch with the exception of the fact that the vocals were clearly re-recorded/overdubbed, and I am sure some of the other parts were as well. Chris's guitar work is as good as Marty's if not better! Shawn on drums was no Nick Menza of the 90's but he's pretty good. Besides even if it were Nick up there now, from what I hear he can't even play that good anymore. I'm a drummer, so I guess I'm just being picky and I always loved how animated Nick was behind the kit. Plus he threw in all these notes that none of the other drummers use and I miss that. It was so great seeing David Ellefson up there again and Mustaine was as awesome as ever. The bonus material is slim but there was some very nice behind the scenes footage. Overall you shouldn't be too disappointed. If the had stuck with a pure live recording aka unaltered audio/video, this would have been perfect. The inner booklet was really lame, but at least it had one.

Another great Megadeth CD

This Best Buy version is really cool. It has a great 3D cover and all the bonus tracks. Now personally I would have moved track 11 down to 13 and bumped 12 & 13 up to be 11 & 12. Then I would have done away with the single live track and maybe added another cover song. Overall the cd is really good despite reviews from people who are only interested in hearing Rust In Peace for the rest of their lives. Was not a fan of David Draiman of Disturbed, but you really can't hear his contributions here so, it doesn't bother me. If his vocals were more prevalent, I would have had to skip those tracks. The cover of Cold Sweat was great and they should have done the song Thunder and Lightning to go with it!! Do yourself a favor and buy this CD and Buy it here from Best Buy to get the Best version!!

Excellent bedside fan

While doing some redecorating, my wife complained that my bedside fan looked ugly and cheap. I need a fan to fall asleep and this fan worked perfectly. It is heavy duty well built all metal construction. It is quiet and best of all it looks great. It blends in nicely with the bedroom furniture and the wife is happy, and isn't that what we all want!

I really love this package. Everything is in a very nice box loaded with 4 glossy B&W photo cards of each band member, a detailed booklet and a large folded poster (which is kinda stupid, because who wants to hang up a poster that has been folded in twenty places). Then you have the remastered CD without the bonus tracks found n the 2004 edition. Just to be clear, there are no bonus tracks at all. What you do get though is the complete "Live at the Cow Palace" show. Previously, various songs from this show have turned up on ep's and cd singles from this era. Now you have the full show and it sounds incredible! This live disc really makes the purchase worth it. All this is missing is a 3rd disk full of bonus tracks as found on the 2004 release plus a few others that showed up on other releases and maybe a few unreleased demos or something. Guess maybe they will do that for the 25th anniversary edition!

A great clean heartwarming inspiring movie. The 3D effect is perfect. It's not overwhelming and shouldn't affect anyone in a bad way. I loved it and my wife and kid loved it.

Welcome to my review of this Bluray edition of That One Night. I first purchased this on DVD and loved it so much that I sold my DVD and purchased the Bluray. Sadly the picture and sound wasn't much of an improvement. That's not to say that either is bad, in fact of all the live Megadeth video releases, this is probably my favorite, followed by Rude Awakening (which has yet to be released on Bluray) and Blood in the Water (which has yet to be released at all. Anyway, not a lot of bonus material or special features here as most of the behind the scenes stuff has been mixed into the movie itself. The show is incredible and hearing the crowd recite the guitar riffs louder than the lyrics because they don't speak great English was really incredible. There doesn't seam to be much overdubbing on this show, it seams pretty true. Oddly, drummer Shawn Drover performs much better here than the live releases that came after this. Makes me think that he is being told to hold back now. His brother Glenn plays guitar here, so nothing special there. The 5.1 mix is nothing at all, so you might as well set it to stereo and add extra bass. James McDonough plays Bass. It would have been nice if the Bluray edition included the extra songs featured on the CD version and the 4 other song cut from both.
What's great about it: Pretty Much Everything
What's not so great: Overall picture quality & missing songs

Disappointing
on September 28, 2013

Let me begin this review by saying that I am a huge Megadeth fan and own almost everything they have ever released. I have also seen them live on the same tour that this video was shot for. Ok, let's get into it. There are no extras or bonus material. It's just the concert. If you purchased this from Best Buy, at least you get the live CD to go with it. Next, the video picture quality and performance was really good, not great. Having such bright video screens behind the players makes it hard to see the actual band members during the performance. This was a huge problem in the actual live show too. The worst part of this, and the part that made it almost unwatchable, was the fact that what you see and what you hear are two different things. What you see is a completely different performance than what you hear. You don't have to watch too closely to notice that when you hear the drummer do something, but what you see is something else... Something is wrong. Now, live, Shawn is not a great drummer, in fact he is downright basic and boring to both watch and to listen to. However, in the studio, he sounds pretty good. Not sure if it's him or he is being told to keep things simple so others can shine. Whatever the case, the audio of his playing sounds pretty good, but watching it is bad. It's not the same at all. The vocal have been overdubbed and I am pretty sure the guitars have been too. My guess is that they recorded the audio "Live In The Studio" and placed it over the video. This is actually rather common, just not for each member. Watch Dave's lips and voice sounds and the distance he is from the mic. It doesn't match. All of this makes this a pretty sloppy release. Personally I would like to make it so that if the live performance you are seeing or hearing has been tampered with or modified in any way, that package should have a warning label. Hope this helps!

This is a great DVD. The camera work was great and the picture quality was excellent. Don't waste your money on the Blue-Ray version, you will hardly see any difference. The performance was top notch with the exception of the fact that the vocals were clearly re-recorded/overdubbed. Chris's guitar work is as good as Marty's if not better! Shawn on drums was no Nick Menza of the 90's but he's pretty darn close. Besides even if it were Nick up there now, from what I hear he can't even play that good anymore. It was so great seeing David Ellefson up there again and Mustaine was as awesome as ever. The bonus material is slim but very nice behind the scenes footage. The only other complaint I have is with the packaging. Be careful when opening this for the first time, or your likely to tear the actual cover. I blame this on the manufacturer for lame material choices. Just be careful is all I'm saying. Overall, You will not be disappointed with this purchase. If you haven't done so already, go get the "Endgame" cd.

I pre-ordered the cd. I won't buy the concert footage. The soundtrack is essential for fans and I am quite satisfied with owning the cd.
