Good Earbuds
on June 26, 2020
Posted by: mikeheel
from NC
The Skullcandy Indy Evo earbuds are a solid pair of true wireless buds. They lack some of the refinement and adjustability of higher-quality earbuds, but they offer 90% of the sound quality for a substantially lower price.
Pros: The loops on each earpiece are convenient for attaching to a neck cord in case they fall out. The controls are fairly easy to learn. It's nice to easily switch between 3 different equalizer modes, although you cannot customize the modes. It's pretty helpful that one of the modes is podcast mode. Different earpiece options allow a customized fit, and they are comfortable. Good sound clarity. "Find With Tile" enabled, which is a neat feature.
Cons: The base sound is not as rich as nicer earbuds and the ambient mode is still pretty muffled.
Overall, these are perfectly useful earbuds that are comfortable, affordable, and offer decent sound quality. Yes, they do look a bit like a certain popular earbud made by a fruit company, but I think they do a better job of in-ear fit.
For the price, they're worth trying.

Ninja Wins Again
on May 16, 2020

The Ninja Professional Plus Kitchen System with Auto-iQ is a terrific food blender. Ninja typically makes a good system, and this one is no exception.
There are a few versions of the blender. This one includes:
* a 64 oz. precision processor bowl with chopping and dough blades and lid,
* a 72 oz. total crushing pitcher with stacked blade assembly and lid
* Two 24-oz single-serve cups with 1 set of pro extractor blades assembly and 2 spout lids.
The Ninja is easy to use and does an excellent job. We frequently use it for smoothies in the 24 oz cups, but we use the bigger stuff from time-to-time, too.
The 1400 watt motor has plenty of power for grinding, chopping, or dicing pretty anything you'd put in it.
Noise levels are typical for the type of machine. I've heard some that were louder, but very few that made less noise.
Of course, it is dishwasher safe, but I recommend top shelf when possible.
There are several pre-set functions: Smoothie, Ice Crush, Extract, Chop, and Dough. They work well, but you can do anything with the manual controls, too. I prefer to use the manual controls for smoothies, for instance.
Overall, this is an excellent kitchen tool.

Fun Lights - Weak Sound
on April 30, 2020
Posted by: mikeheel

The Mooni Portable Lantern Speaker could have been so much better. As-is, it's merely ok. The lights are nice. But the sound is anemic, at best.
For the size, you'd think it would have decent sound. Nope. I guess they have a small speaker hidden inside this lantern style base. Higher ranges sound tinny. Lower ranges sound washed out. It is decent at the mids, though. Overall, I cannot recommend this a serious speaker.
I realize it's a novelty speaker, but there are other BT speakers with various lighting packages that sound dramatically better, and even have cooler tricks.
For instance, while a remote is nice (I guess), an app would have been better. Even better would have been integration with smart controls, like Google Assistant or Alexa.
It is at least mildly water resistant, but it is not waterproof.
Granted, this sells for under $100. But for the sound and features, it still seems overpriced.
Oh, and a red light stays on while charging until fully charged, so good luck relaxing at night if you plan to keep it in your room.
On the bright side, my teenage daughter enjoys playing with the lights.

Quality Budget B/W Laser Printer
on March 31, 2020

Inkjet printers are versatile. They can handle printing documents, presentations, or photos. Depending on the printer, they can do better or worse jobs with each type of printing. It's also common to see consumer-grade inkjet printers that can serve as photocopiers. But sometimes, you mainly want to print documents. Black and white is fine. It's more important to have crisp and non-smudgy text provided by a laser printer than to have the versatility of an inkjet. Enter the HP Neverstop Laser 1001 nw printer.
The HP Neverstop is a wifi-enabled printer that you can use with HP's Smart app to print from nearly any device. It is easy to set up and use. Aside from that, it has nearly no features. It is not a photocopier or fax machine. It cannot do color. It exists to churn out Word documents and similar stuff, where legibility and professional-looking print matter more than color.
It can print photos with good resolution, but they will be B&W only. The same with any other document. You can print directly from your computer, phone, or tablet over your wifi network.
Physical setup is pretty easy, but could have been even easier. From the box, you open the top of the printer, remove the orange plastic spacer and the tape that holds it in, then you snap a little blue piece of plastic onto a gray piece of plastic to form the bottom of the paper tray, load paper, then snap in the top of the paper tray. Figuring out how the blue piece attaches to the gray piece took a couple of minutes.
To configure the printer, connect it via USB to a laptop and go into Settings to find it. You should see an option for the printer to get network access credentials from your computer. Choose that, and the printer is now available to all devices on your wifi network. You can also rename it, which I did immediately to avoid chuckling about "Conner4Real" every time I print something.
That's it. The printer can be up and running five minutes after you open the box.
If the limitations of the printer sound ok for how you'll use it, I would recommend this printer. If, however, you want your printer to also be able to do color prints and photocopies, this is not the printer for you.

Pretty Nice
on February 12, 2020
Posted by: mikeheel

This Bissell Air Purifier does a pretty nice job. I have several bad allergies, so I was excited to try this out. I had hoped to let it run at night in our bedroom, but even at low speed the hum is a little much for me; so I end up just running it until I go to bed.
But if you were to use it in a bedroom at night, the lights automatically shut off when the unit senses there isn't much ambient light in the room. That's a nice touch. Most people probably aren't as picky about the low hum as I am.
In terms of basic function, it does a nice job of removing unwanted particulates from the air. I have no complaints about using it in general. I had been struggling with feeling like the combination of dust and dog dander in the air was bothering my sinuses, especially with the heat running lately. This little guy seems to be helping.
It uses a colored light on the front to show the quality of your air.
It's super easy to use. Take it out of the box, remove the plastic from the filters, put them back in, plug it in, push the button. That's about it.

Easy, But State Filings Cost Extra
on February 5, 2020
Posted by: mikeheel
from NC
The H&R Block Deluxe Tax Software works pretty well. The forms are easy to fill out, and it organizes your financial information nicely. I don't recommend using this sort of self-filing software if you have more complicated filings (If you have us the AMT calculations or you receive K1s for instance), but the H&B Block software works very well for relatively straight-forward tax filings. It will handle the more complicated stuff, but it's a lot more work to input, as well; so keep that in mind.
I will note there are other options out there that cost less to use, but there is some security in going with a name brand in the arena of tax prep.
The amount of the upcharge to also file state returns was disappointing ($40 for the software and $20 to e-file). I realize most similar platforms have some additional charge for state filings, but this was on the high end, based on prior experience; and it lowered my recommendation of the software quite a bit.

Great To Have

I am very pleased with the APC Back-UPS Pro 1000VA Battery Back-Up System.
I installed it in my home office and connected my surge protector to it. I have a computer, 2 monitors, a switch, and a couple smart home devices connected to the surge protector.
I then unplugged the APC battery backup unit to test it out. Everything kept running, and the APC emitted a warning tone to let me know power had been lost. I let it chug along for a little bit that way with no degradation in how my devices operated.
I am completely confident it will provide adequate time for me to complete a task and then safely shut down in the event of a power outage; and I can confidently recommend this little guy.

Good Smaller Mouse
on November 9, 2019
Posted by: mikeheel
from NC
The Logitech M355 is a good smaller mouse. It is best suited for use as a travel mouse paired with a laptop.
The design is a bit interesting. It has a bit more length than other compact mice (I guess that's still the plural in this context) but has more of a flat top. I missed the curved top a bit.
The scroll wheel is functional but feels and sounds like lower quality when compared with my other mice.
Logitech did a pretty cool thing by storing the USB dongle inside the mouse. You pop the top off, remove the dongle, plug the dongle into a standard USB port on your computer, and the mouse instantly is paired. I appreciate the design touch, so you won't lose the dongle while traveling.
The mouse seems to track well enough. Again, it's built for travel, so don't expect it to keep up with a high-end gaming mouse.
Overall, it's a solid performer. I wish the quality felt a little better and that there was more of a hump to the top of it, but it works well. And the USB dongle storage is a very nice touch.

Have Some Pasta!
on November 4, 2019
Posted by: mikeheel

The Philips Avance Collection Pasta and Noodle Maker is an excellent kitchen device if you have any interest in making your own pasta. It comes with a variety of molds and has built-in scales, which make it pretty easy to use (although it looks intimidating when you first unpack it). The molds clean easily and are dishwasher safe, too, which is nice. You can make a variety of pasta types, as well as raman. The process is pretty quick, overall. It generally takes under 20 minutes to have fresh, homemade pasta ready to serve.

Excellent Clear Case
on November 4, 2019
Posted by: mikeheel
from NC
I generally avoid clear cases because every clear case I've tried has significant light bleed around the upper edge when using the flashlight function on a phone. However, the Tech21 does a far better job than most at limiting the bleed.
Overall, the case looks good. It has a very slight bluish hue to it that looks very good on the black iPhone 11.
The case fits perfectly, protects well, and is appropriately grippy to use. I like it a lot.
If you just have to have a clear case, then I recommend this one to you.

For $200 (on sale) it's well worth the price
By Outlander0088 from Columbus,OH
I bought this tablet for $200 to play around with a Windows 8 tablet. I already have an iPad, iPhone, Nexus 5 and Nexus 7. and wanted to give a Windows tablet a try.
I will say I am impressed even though its Windows 8.1, I'm not a fan of 8.1. In desktop mode its easier than I thought it would be navigate with just your finger. However, I would strongly recommend using a stylus.
One big NOTE: It DOESN'T come with Office 2013 Home / Student. You can try Office 365 but then you have to purchase the application. I called Best Buy and Lenovo but they were no help.
I would recommend buying it for the price but don't expect Microsoft Office.
Office
March 8, 2014
I also just purchased this device at BB for $200. If you look through the paperwork inside the box, you should find a paper with an activation code for Office. I used that code and was able to fully active Office. Most Win 8.1 devices, like my Surface Pro, include only a trial, but this actually includes Office. Please correct your review.

Phenomal Deal on a Small Win 8 Tab
By mikeheel from NC
I have been eyeing various 8-inch Windows tablets as they have been released. I was looking for a complimentary device to go along with my Surface Pro. As usual when I am in BB, I walked by the tablet display area and was surprised to see the Miix 2 on sale for $200. After taking a day or two to mull it over, I decided the deal was too good to pass up despite the skimpy memory.
Performance is much better than I expected. The Miix responds quickly and smoothly. Apps and programs open without lag.
The screen was also a pleasant surprise. It is not 1080, so my expectations were a bit low. However, color is very good. Video and pictures render very well.
I saw some reviews that complained about touch response. I have not had any issues in several days of heavy use. I presume there was a software update that addressed that issue, but I have not confirmed that.
Several reviews here at BB seemed confused about Office. The box contains an activation key for Office. It may fool some people into thinking it is the key for Windows itself, but it is for Office. So it does include Office Home & Student for no additional cost.
I also noticed the BB site listed the Miix 2 8 as an RT device. It is not RT; it runs full Windows 8.1.
The tablet itself is attractive and feels relatively well made. I'm not a fan of the stickers on the back, but they can be easily removed. For those who wonder, it does fit in the back pocket of men's jeans or most sport coat pockets.
My only complaint is the 32gb of memory. Of course, I knew that when I purchased it, so I added a 32gb SD card, which helps. The only negative is that Windows does not give you the option to save apps on the memory card. But the combination of the SD card and OneDrive makes even 32gb palatable.
So, the Lenovo Miix 2 8 with full Win 8.1, included Office, snappy performance, and a decent display for just $200 is a solid winner.
If you are the market for a smaller tablet that runs full Windows 8.1, I strongly recommend the Lenovo Miix 2 8.
Certificate
March 22, 2014
That key is the same one for Office. If you look just above the sticker, it will say Windows and Office are included. It is confusing, so that's why a lot of folks have thought it did not include Office.
PS: I'm still laughing at myself for the typo on the header. Ugh.

Wanted to Love but Didn't
By mikeheel
I wanted to love the Netgear Orbi system. I really did. But, alas, it was not meant to be.
First, the positives:
1. Impressive speed and wifi coverage. If that's all you're looking for, then the Orbi is a strong contender.
2. Relatively attractive appearance.
3. MU-MIMO ability.
4. USB port and a few LAN ports.
5. Print server function.
6. The satellite unit does make a big difference in terms of signal strength in areas of the house further from the primary router.
The negatives:
1. No guest network. Seriously? I had a hard time believing this was correct, but that's what the setup software said, and there was no way to override or change it.
2. Horrendous management app and software. I've used a lot of modems in my day. The Netgear app and UI is far behind other top routers, IMO.
3. Setup process is automated and had to be restarted several times before it actually worked. Even registration didn't work. I would have preferred a manual setup option.
The lack of flexibility in terms of secondary networks is a killer for me. I really did not think there were wireless routers being sold in 2016 that could not accommodate a guest network. Yet, the Netgear is a new product in a new niche - the home mesh network. The idea seems to have a lot of merit, but this attempt isn't worth the price, IMO.
I was provided this router for review. My normal router is a Linksys EA9500. I must admit the signal strength for the Netgear exceeded the Linksys, and both were equal in terms of speed. That's saying something, because the Linksys is the best router I've ever used. That's part of why I think the home mesh network idea has merit.
But the Netgear was not good enough to make me want to switch. Improve the UI, and add guest network capacity, and maybe I'd reconsider.
Might Adjust Later
September 20, 2016
I just learned the Orbi is due to be updated to allow a guest network later this year. Assuming that happens, I'd move this up to at least a 4-star review. I'd still like to see improvement in the UI, but it is functional as-is, and the range and speed on the Orbi mesh system is excellent.

Prevent dead zones around your home with the help of this Linksys Wi-Fi range extender. It works with all types of Wi-Fi routers, and it uses multi-user MIMO for speed and efficiency. This Linksys Wi-Fi range extender can be used to create a different access point or to extend the field of the router’s connection.

Bonus Wi-Fi Range
By mikeheel
The specs for this new wi-fi range extender are impressive. I appreciate the beamforming technology. It also supports all current (and prior) wi-fi standards: 802.11ac, 802.11n, 802.11a/g, and 802.11b.
Unboxing:
The extender is a fairly basic white box that mounts directly via plug into a power outlet. It looks fairly generic, like a carbon monoxide detector or such.
Setup:
I have a fairly new Linksys (AC1900) router. The extender is also an AC1900 device. I pressed the WPS button on the router to initiate pairing and then, per instructions, the WPS button on the extender. Failure. I went through the process several times but never could establish connection with my router from a distance of 5 feet. I then abandoned the WPS setup instructions and switched to web setup, which went smoothly for both 5Ghz and 2.4 Ghz bands.
Once it was up and running, it gave me a good analysis of the proper location via spot finder. That was helpful.
The instructions recommend giving the extended network a different name than your primary network, such as adding "ext" to the end of your network name. I actually forced it to use the same name as my primary network, since all my devices are new enough to switch seamlessly. If you have older devices, I would suggest you follow the naming directions provided with the extender.
Function:
So far, so good. As I mentioned earlier, the specs are very strong for this extender, and it lives up to my expectations. My devices connect and stay connected seamlessly. The extender offers a range of an additional 10000 square feet (roughly 100 x 100 feet, if that helps give a better idea). I'm a big fan of MI-MIMU, which seems to work well here, too. I use a ton of wireless devices - multiple streaming devices across the house, several gaming consoles, a selection of laptops, tablets, and mobile devices, and a few other connected household devices (thermostats and such). Everything works well.
I now have a very strong signal throughout both floors of the house (router is on top floor, extender on first floor) as well as my yard. In fact, I have decent signal just past the end of my cul-de-sac.
I should note it also includes a 1 GB ethernet port, which could be handy for certain devices.
Wrap Up:
I am pleased with the function and appearance of the device. My only gripe was that the WPS setup failed multiple times. For that reason, I can't give it 5 stars.
Update
September 20, 2016
For some reason, I cannot edit my review above. However, I realized subsequent to posting that I am an idiot. The WPS would not work because I was trying to connect with a hidden network. Doh! So, this should truly be a 5-star review.
Further, i have conducted several recent speed and signal strength tests both with and without the Repeater on the network, and the results are clear that the Repeater makes a significant difference in speed and signal strength in the parts of the house furthest from my primary router.
So, please read this as a 5-star review. My apologies.

Do these have active noise reduction or just passive noise reduction. It isn't clear from the listing?

They have active noise canceling; it works quite well.

Sleep better. Cover unwanted noise with soothing sounds. Bose noise-masking sleepbuds™ are uniquely designed for sleep. They don’t stream music or have acoustic noise cancellation. Instead, these tiny, wireless earbuds use pre-loaded, soothing sounds to cover up unwanted noises, so you can get to sleep — and stay asleep. Plus, unlike traditional earplugs, they’re super comfortable and made to stay in place all night long, even if you sleep on your side. 1. Choose your sound, 2. Set an alarm, 3. Fall asleep without unwanted noise.

I can’t use the Bose -noise-masking-sleepbuds-white to Make phone call.

The Sleepbuds are not for music or phone calls. Their only purpose is to help mask outside noise in hopes of providing a better sleep environment.

Q I am looking for1 Orbi router and 3 Orbi satellites for my big home, since Netgear is not giving the option to buy satellites individually ,will I be able to order two boxes of Orbi and be able to use one of Orbi router as a satellite ,? interchange

I saw no way to use the primary as a satellite when setting up the Orbi system. Netgear will be selling Satellites separately, though. I'd suggest waiting on that. Also, "big home" means different things to different people. I don't know if you're talking about 15,000sf or 4000sf. If closer to 4k, then the single base and satellite may be sufficient.

Will this product cover a 2000 sq. ft., one level house with only one (1) WiFi Name? The reason for this question is I'm currently using an extension to my router which has given the front of the house a different wifi name from the back of the house.

Yes, The Orbi has a primary base and a satellite, but it is one mesh network with one network name. It is not the same as a range extender (although, I should also note you can usually give a range extender the same name as your primary wifi network). However, the Orbi may be overkill for a 2000sf home.
