The perfect combination

I have tried various smartwatches over the last two years (Samsung Gear Neo, Moto 360 version 2, Samsung Gear S2, Fitbit Blaze). Every watch had its positives and negatives, but they all left me wanting something more. What I didn't realize until I tried the Fossil Q Crewmaster, is that less is more in this instance.
Look:
I have long been a collector of Fossil watches, from casual to dress. In going the "smartwatch" route, I lost that design that made wearing watches so fun. The Fossil Q Crewmaster completely remedied that issue. The analog face is simply awesome. The design and look is everything I came to expect from Fossil. The face is 46mm, plenty large enough (in contrast to my way-too-small 42mm Samsung Gear S2) but not oversized. The band is comfortable and sturdy enough to hold the heavier time piece, and I love the ease of swapping out bands for different occasions. I wear some pretty heavy watches at times - this one feels perfect on my wrist, allowing me to even wear it through the night (discussed more later).
Notifications:
After wearing smartwatches that allowed me to read every message/post/email, I was becoming increasingly annoyed with staring at the watch. I originally thought the smartwatch would take me away from my phone screen, but it really just extended the screen and made me squint more as I would read the messages in tiny fonts. I was ready for a change, and the Fossil Q Crewmaster delivers on every level, almost to perfection.
The simplicity of the watch notifications is a welcome reprieve from the constant scrolling updates of normal smartwatches. I'm able to assign 6 distinct contact notifications (think your "Top 5" from days of old). When I get a call/text from these people, the watch hands point directly to the corresponding number. I can't read the message on my watch, and that's fine for me. I simply get to know that I just got a message from a specific person, so if I was expecting a response I can grab my phone and read. If not, I go on with my day. The phone also allows you to link apps and assign notifications to emails/FB messenger/calls/texts from "everyone". I can't stress enough how liberating this has been.
Syncing/App:
The Fossil Q app is rather basic, but like the watch itself, this is exactly how it should be. The process of linking the watch to your app was seamless (though it did take a couple tries, reportedly due to the most recent update to the app). The step tracker is easy to read on the watch face, and I can get the exact count via the app. I feel the step counter has been pretty accurate, no worse than any others I've used (Samsung, Fitbit, Google).
The watch syncs to the time on your phone, so you never have to worry about adjusting the time. You can also add a second timezone to check real quick using the middle button on the right side of the face. Very cool - very simple.
The bottom right button allows you to add another bit of functionality to the watch. For me, I use it as a camera shutter button (one of the only things I've found the Apple Watch excels in over others). A simple choice in the app and your watch is now the shutter button that allows you to set up your camera and avoid the distorted "selfie" views.
As mentioned earlier, I can even wear this watch to sleep because it's so comfortable. The sleep tracker is ridiculously cool. It tracks your sleep, letting you know if you reach a goal and whether the sleep you had was calm or restless. This isn't a necessity, but it's been a really nice eye opener for my sleep patterns and removes the need for another app.
Battery Life:
OK, this is one of the absolute best things about this watch - 6 MONTH BATTERY LIFE. You read that right! I don't have to charge this watch every night or every few days. I will gladly pay to replace a battery twice a year if it means less cords and never worrying about throwing the watch on and the battery dying. Seriously - awesome!
Con:
I have a single con, and it's a pretty small (but common) one with this watch. The hands do not illuminate at night. This is honestly my only complaint.
Price:
I got this watch on sale for $132. Originally I didn't know if I'd willingly pay $175 for it, but after trying it out I'd happily pay that before paying $300-$400 for the other recent smartwatch offerings. I think the sub-$200 price point makes this watch worth a shot if you know what you're getting and want the "less is more" approach.
I've received more compliments on this watch in just a week than I ever got from my other smartwatches. And nobody has rolled their eyes as I check my watch like when I'd read an entire email on a wristwatch.
My Best Buy number: 2948608140
I would recommend this to a friend!
