They don't need morales to be funny

Easily, one of the best things on TV. The characters manage to fumble their way through those thoughts that most people don't speak out loud using loose morals and poor ethics.
I didn't start watching these until Season 3, and I burned through every episode in about 2 weeks. I couldn't stop watching it.
What's great about it: Excellent characters, different and hysterical

Proving games can have story to rival literature
on October 6, 2008

This is the first game I can remember that made me feel tense and caught up in the story and the environment as though I were watching a well-crafted piece of cinema or reading excellent literature.
I love first-person shooters, but the genre has become pretty stale with WW2 after WW2 clone. Bioshock managed to take a completely different direction, limiting some gunplay, yet adding with a series of different twists.
I don't find the lack of multiplayer to be a condemning downfall by any means. This iconic game is one of the few games I would recommend as an absolute must play.
What's great about it: Excellent story, engrossing environment, very creepy
What's not so great: No multiplayer

The murder of Julius Caesar sparks an earth-shaking series of events in this release featuring all 10 episodes of Rome: Season Two. Season Two of the lavish, lusty British historical series Rome begins exactly where Season One left off, with the murder of Julius Caesar on the Ides of March in the year 44 BCE. The power struggle that follows is set in motion when, thanks largely to the machinations of Caesar's scheming niece Atia (Polly Walker), her young and callow son Octavian is announced as heir to the throne--infuriating Caesar's closest ally Marc Antony (James Purefoy). In the war that follows between Antony's "Caesarians" and Octavians "Liberators", there can be only one winner--but it is not until the season concludes in the year 31 BCE that the true winner is revealed. Amidst the intrigues of Rome's high-born power brokers, we never lose sight of the secondary plotline involving two lowly veterans of the Gallic wars, Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson) and Lucius Vorenus (Kevin McKidd). Characteristically, it is the thoroughly hedonistic Pullo who thrives and prospers during this turbulent era, with each stroke of luck advancing his prestigate and wealth. Conversely, Lucius suffers spectacularly throughout season two, beginning with the death of his beloved wife and the distintegration of his family. The ultimate blow will not be dealt to Vorenus until the season finale, but in the meantime much is made of the fact that Gallo has aligned himself with Octavian, and Vorenus casts his lot with Antony. Though scrupulously authentic in its historical detail, Rome continues to successfully pinpoint the most "contemporary" aspects of ancient History. Especially notable this season is the series' depiction of Rome's small but ever-growing Jewish community, and the emergence of "Crip and Blood"-style gang warfare in the treacherous Aventine Collegium district. In a similar vein, after Marc Antony suffers his humiliating defeat at Actium, he retreats to the palace of his Egyptian lover Queen Cleopatra (Lyndsley Marshal), where the two lost souls wallow in debauchery.

Get seasons 1 & 2 because you won't want to wait

I loved Rome Season 1, so I went head first into Season 2. Although it does have a particularly different feel to it than Season 1, it is every bit as good.
The characters in Season 2 all go through a lot of development. Many of them become very different, but I felt like this was a natural progression, and not forced. It's hard to carry on about how good the show was without spoiling either season. I strongly recommend watching the show.
This season only had 12 episodes and was canceled due to being too expensive to produce, however, the show wraps cleanly, and I never felt it was rushing to an ending.
What's great about it: Character development and solid storylines with closure
What's not so great: It had to end

Probably one of the most honored epics on recent television, HBO's mini-series Band of Brothers was produced by the powerhouse team of Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. It won the Golden Globe for Best Mini-series and is nominated for 19 Emmys. The 6-disc DVD set comes in an embossed metallic case. It has an extraordinary amount of information in addition to the 10-part true-life story of the men of Easy Company in the 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. To start with, it contains the documentary "We Stand Alone Together: The Men of Easy Company," which interviews the real men of Easy Company as they tell their stories, inner-cut with film footage and rare and archival photos. Also included is a making-of feature on the mini-series, actor Ron Livingston's video diary that shows behind-the-scenes footage from the actor's perspective, and a featurette of the screening on the beaches of Normandy. There is also an optional enhanced viewing "Field Guide," which extensively references people, places and events connected to Easy Company and their campaign through Europe and WWII as a whole. Additionally included are character bios, web-links to the Band of Brothers living memorial, as well as other pertinent sites, a still photo gallery, episodic previews and scene selection menus. The DVD is released in widescreen only with a 16:9 aspect ratio from High Definition digital masters, the audio is DTS English and 5.1 Surround as well as English, French and Spanish Dolby Surround. Spanish subtitles and English closed-captioning is also included. This is a must-own DVD set, especially for history buffs and collectors of World War II information.

Best WW2 Series yet
on July 7, 2008

Having watched and read a great deal about WW2, I knew I wanted to watch the Band of Brothers series. I wasn't prepared for how well done it had been and how much of an impact it would have. The series quickly became one of my favorite series ever. Once I started watching them, I couldn't stop until I was done.
The graphic telling of the 101st Airborne's story of WW2 isn't for the faint of heart, but I would recommend it to virtually everyone. That being said, make sure you clear out a large chunk of time for Band of Brothers when you start watching, because you won't want to stop. As soon as I finished, I had to fight the urge to start them over again.
What's great about it: Painstaking efforts taken for accuracy, involved original surviving members
What's not so great: A little expensive, but worth it

Best PSP game thus far
on July 3, 2008
Posted by: AltOp

I was shocked at how good this handheld game was. The graphics were comparable to the full priced console games and the sound effects were easily the best audio on a PSP.
The game is shorter than GoW 1 and 2, but the pacing of the game is great, and the game is relatively inexpensive too.
If you have a PSP and you're hunting for a good game like I was, God Of War: Chains of Olympus is what you're looking for.
What's great about it: Great graphics, as good as the PS2 games
What's not so great: Can feel a little awkward on your hands

For those who thought director Zack Snyder's remake of George A. Romero's zombie classic packed an impressive punch in theaters, Universal Home Video's DVD release of the unrated director's cut provides even more bloody fun -- in addition to offering some impressive bonus materials that actually serve to enhance the viewing experience. Lovingly presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, this release of Dawn of the Dead looks fantastic. Not only does the presentation feature colors that are as bold as they are vivid, but it also offers great skin tones, shows little to no signs of edge enhancement, and delivers pitch-black darkness in the nighttime scenes. Dawn of the Dead is a very high-contrast film, and Universal has done a terrific job in faithfully preserving its visual presentation on the small screen. The Dolby Digital 5.1 surround mix likewise does an effective job in keeping viewers ill at ease by means of punchy music cues and eerie directional effects. Additional footage that didn't appear in the theatrical release covers everything from more graphic zombie mayhem to some revealing and endearing character development. Even with such a hearty visual presentation, the reason most viewers will be purchasing this disc is for the generous bonus materials -- and they're not likely to be disappointed. Unlike the sometimes superfluous extras on most over-bloated special edition DVDs, Dawn of the Dead offers some bonus materials that truly draw the viewer in to the experience of the film. "The Lost Tape" of gun store owner Andy (Bruce Bohne) offers a videotaped document of the one of the more appealing but justifiably underdeveloped characters in the film, while "Special Report: Zombie Invasion" offers a faux newscast which covers the epidemic from the first reports to the moment when broadcast television gives way to the Emergency Broadcast System. If the 12-plus minutes of deleted scenes aren't necessarily the "pulse-pounding scenes too terrifying for the final theatrical release!" that the packaging promises, they do offer a few nice scares and some great character development in addition to showing, through the optional commentary, that Snyder has a keen eye for pacing. For those interested in special makeup effects, this release offers a trio of unrated exclusives that are both revealing and informative. "Raising the Dead" finds special makeup effects designer David Leroy Anderson and other filmmakers discussing the process of creating the frightful zombies, and while "Attack of the Living Dead" may give the impression that it's little more than a zombie-kill montage, it's actually a detailed study of the special effects behind six of the film's most impressive visuals. If viewers are at all curious how the filmmakers get those zombie noggins popping, they need look no further than "Splitting Headaches: Anatomy of Exploding Heads," in which Anderson, Snyder, and crew reveal how they make the head-shots so convincing. A commentary track by Snyder and producer Eric Newman is also involving and entertaining, showcasing not only the director's dedication to the project and sense of humor, but also his love for the original Dawn of the Dead. The two interact playfully throughout the lively track, and in addition to making light of the typical horror logic presented in some points of the film, they also point out scenes that were extended or added to the DVD release and expand on why they think the scenes add to the overall impact of the film. DVD-ROM materials are also accessible.

Good remake with solid special features
on June 24, 2008
Posted by: AltOp

Most remakes these days are simply studios going back to the well for a few more dollars. However, with Zack Snyder at the helm (director of 300), this remake was as good as I could have hoped it to be. I'm a big fan of the Zombie genre, and I would recommend this film to anyone that's a fan of horror or action films.
The DVD contains several featurettes that build on the world and round out what is happening during the days events. These additions, as well as several behind-the-scenes features, set the bar for what other special-feature DVDs should strive to be.
What's great about it: Great special features, a high-quality remake, good soundtrack

If you liked KOTOR, you need to play Mass Effect
on June 19, 2008

I have been playing RPGs for at least 20 years now, and this is definitely one of the better ones. The world is really fleshed out, and they provide background stories for virtually everything, if you want to research the world. If you enjoyed KOTOR (Knights of the Old Republic), you should give this one a chance.
I bought the DLC (downloadable content) online before starting. The DLC fits into the regular gameplay, so I'd advise you purchase that before starting (about $5).
So far I'm 24+ hours into it and it doesn't seem to be tapping off any time soon. I completely hooked. At first I wasn't sure if this game was for me, but it won me over absolutely.
The drawbacks of the game are some of the long loading times and some of the side missions are trivial and tedious. But they are both negligible.
The game has a lot of the same technical limitations that are found on next-gen systems. It would best suit you to have an HDTV to play this, because the text is really hard to read on an SDTV and there is A LOT of text.
What's great about it: Hours of quality gameplay, available downloadable content
What's not so great: Long loading, should have an HDTV

A decent alternative

I bought these when I was on vacation and in need of a replacement pair of headphones. They worked out as a good, inexpensive solution. If you're looking to upgrade generic headphones for something a little bit better, I would recommend these. However, if you want something better for just a few dollars more, you can usually find a good deal on JLab ear buds, which I have and love.
What's great about it: Inexpensive, multiple sizes of earbuds
What's not so great: Need to fit into ear just right

Fun movie, if you know what you're getting in to
on May 12, 2008
Posted by: AltOp
from Boston
In all of its ridiculousness, the movie is pretty good. From start to finish, it's a nonstop, way-over-the-top action and fun if you just want to watch it for constant gun play. It's riddled with cheesy one-liners and retorts that you can't help but smile at.
If you're looking for compelling story and/or any kind of character development that you'd be used to from these actors, you'll want to try something else. But for mindless gun play, this will do the trick.
What's great about it: Short and very fast paced
What's not so great: Silly, but fun story (if you can really call it that)

Very disappointing Superman movie
on May 2, 2008
Posted by: AltOp
from Boston
I was so pumped for this movie. I own the entire original comic series, but I also understand that most movies need to stray from the original literature for the sake of time and presentation. I'm also a big fan of Adam Baldwin (voice of Superman), so i was willing to cut this one a lot of slack.
The end result was really bad. The script was painful (I know it's a cartoon aimed at kids, but even they would pick this out), but even worse than that was Doomsday was little more than a cameo in the SUPERMAN VS. DOOMSDAY MOVIE! If you thought you were getting a Death of Superman movie, you will be sorely disappointed.
What's great about it: Fun animation style
What's not so great: Terrible scripting, completely negligent of the titled character
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
