The Mid 2017 HP Omen gaming laptop is a solid performer with the looks to match, of course appearance being subjective. The Omen has the typical gamer aesthetic; however, it is not overbearing or gaudy when compared to other laptops in the performance gaming category. The Omen is definitely not your ultra-portable notebook to sit at the coffee shop with, a possible con for some, but instead it is a great desktop replacement and portable gaming powerhouse. This is a certainly a large laptop with some hefty weight, conversely, I believe its weight gives it a sturdy build quality, while also adding ample room for HP’s cooling solution that handles heat dissipation very adequately. I previously had a ASUS GL502VM with a GTX1060 which had terrible thermal management, so much so that I returned it days later to exchange for the Omen. I am happy to report that thermal management is not an issue with the HP. The AMD Rx 580 handles modern games with ease. I have listed some performance numbers for a few popular AAA titles below. .Overwatch 80 Fps Ultra .Battlefield 1 50 Fps Avg High .GTA V 60 Fps Locked Very High settings
Overall, this laptop is a great choice for the price point. I am satisfied with my purchase. If I had to nitpick, it would be the forgoing of a SSD boot drive. In 2017, in my opinion a SSD boot drive should be standard In all PC’s. Luckily, HP has made upgradeability a synch with an easily removable back cover giving you access to add an SSD or more ram. I personally will be adding a SSD and expanding the ram capacity.
HP has made a nearly perfect mid-range budget friendly gaming solution that meets high quality standards. I rate this laptop a 4 out of 5. Only not giving a perfect score due the exclusion of an SSD, as mentioned.
