The headphones Apple wished they built
on November 5, 2016

These are actually the second pair of Muzik one headphones in the house, I wanted a white pair. I am going to leave these paired to my 4th gen. Apple TV, as they are just phenomenal when listening to big movie soundtracks, blockbuster action films and the like, and not disturbing the rest of the house. The top button on the right earcup plays/pauses video playback, and a swipe up/down gesture on the touchpad surface of the right earcup controls volume. I have a top-of-the-line Bose home theatre setup costing ten times what Muzik one headphones do, and these babies actually sound better, crisper on dialog. Granted, only one person can pair and listen at a time, but that is fine for me as I am the night owl here. Recently I was watching a film that had an earthquake rumble in the soundtrack. It was late at night, and the rumble was so impressive I thought for a second the subwoofer was on and I would wake the house. I laughed to myself as I realized when the Apple TV pairs with a Bluetooth speaker like the Muzik one headphones, it disconnects the digital audio stream to any other devices. The rumble was so impressive I rewound the film to listen again…incredible. I apologize in advance for the length here, but I really love these and any of my friends who have heard them feel the same. If you love great audio products you have to check these out!
I have spent my professional life in various consumer hardware and software companies developing, marketing and selling products. I am a lifelong musician and avid music lover. This said, I have owned/used a great many headphones over the years, from the cheapest earbuds to studio headphones, to noise cancelling units from their inception, to custom molded in-ear monitors to exotic audiophile setups costing thousands.
While a lover of great designs, I am also a pragmatist. Rarely does a product live up to its hype, so I always go in looking at a new design for the chink in the armor.
The essentials of a great product is that it provides a customer experience and value that exceeds expectations at its core function. While Muzik wants to tell you about how different this product is from headphones, I don’t. While their extended features are impressive, and I will comment on them, I need you to first understand that this product is in my estimation, the best design and consumer value in headphones in the market today by far. Allow me to elaborate:
DESIGN
The comfort and folding convenience allows compact storage and all-day wearability. Where competing headphones make you choose between on-ear or over-ear designs, this comes with both sets of soft leather cushions in the box. The pads are held in place by a sturdy frame and four magnets. They interchange in seconds and feel like they are glued to the device while in place. The battery life is stunning, trust me. They say 30 hours, but I have experienced much more.
CONSTRUCTION
The fit and finish is sheer perfection. Every element of your purchase, from the cables to the packaging to the stitching on the soft leather ear cushions possess that obvious attention to detail, of an uncompromising, obsessive and well-loved design. Products succeed when their design goals are to build something you want to buy yourself. Musik’s designers realized that its essential function as a headphone is paramount. No clever technical embellishments could make up for a second-rate headphone design.
Those of you who have purchased headphones in this price range should be able to freely admit that some of the highest-rated brands are built like cheap junk, and break under normal, gentle use. Read reviews for the Bose, Turtle Beach, Beats, Plantronics, etc. You will see they all suffer from inadequate build quality, and generally obsolescent design. The usual failure mode I have experienced is the swivel joint of one of the ear cups breaks, rendering the unit unable to hold the cup against your ears and it is generally irreparable. Paying to ship defective units back under warranty adds real cost and inconvenience to the owner, who probably assumes the replacement will just break again because of a poor design and material choice. In gleaming contrast, Muzik uses the finest anodized aircraft aluminum on these areas, providing strength, rigidity and long life. Just handling the Muzik One and inspecting these joint areas makes this obvious.
PERFORMANCE
The short answer is that the Muzik One phones demonstrably outperform devices near their price level, and have similar performance to competitors costing twice as much. I have a $600 wired Beyer Dynamic headset, and the Muzik One is on a par with sound quality using the Muzik included cable and a Pono high res audio player as source. I was stunned with how good they sound. The real feat in my mind however, is that the listening quality when using the Muzik One headphones wireless is also tremendous. The built-in microphones provide clear audio when on a call, and the quality is especially noticeable when using a full fidelity connection like Facetime, LINE or Skype. As I said, I regularly pair the Muzik One with my 4th generation Apple TV, and watching an action film with big dynamic range is incredible, PLUS, I can use the button on the phones to pause the video playback. They are the perfect Apple TV accessory.
BOTTOM LINE
The Muzik One product stands alone as the best value for your headphone dollar, hands down.
1) Superior mechanical design and production quality
2) Interchangeable ear pads provide BOTH on ear and over ear wear options.
3) Superb power management and battery life (> 30 hours in my use case)
4) Wired and wireless operation
5) Excellent microphones provide clear audio on calls
6) They fold beautifully compact, with a nice case.
These are the headphones Apple wished they built.
In consumer electronics, it is widely recognized that Apple’s success where others have failed is due to their obsession with the details of a product, honing the essence and providing a polished customer “out of box” experience. My highest praise for a product is to say that if I was handed these headphones and they bore an Apple logo, I would expect all that I have seen Muzik accomplish here.
Buy these, and you will not be disappointed…I am willing to bet you will feel they exceed what I have documented as pretty lofty expectations. Mark my words. Money well spent…even if all they were were great headphones…but, you ain’t heard nothing yet. What I touch on next is the icing on the cake, encompassing many elements of patented technology, culminating in a new category of device altogether.
ENTER THE SMART HEADPHONE
OK…now I will finally touch on the technology Muzik talks most about, the smart headphone. Simply put, these outstanding best-in-class headphones have some surprising innovation hiding in the right earcup. On that earcup you will notice a small round button on the top edge with an integrated LED, next to a USB connector on the side of the device. The button is used for power, pairing and pausing playback, as well as serving as an indicator for power on, charging status, and pairing status. The USB is for charging and firmware updates. Simple enough. What you do not immediately notice is the center panel on the outside of the right earcup is a capacitive touchpad that accepts gestures for a number of control functions, and contains 4 programmable discrete buttons that are mapped using an iOS app. The feature list is extensive, and has the ability to perpetually grow and change with software updates to the app, and firmware updates to the headphones themselves. The gestures are for basic things like changing volume, switching tracks, pause, etc. Use it for a few minutes and it will feel very natural. The four buttons are concave areas so you can find them by touch, and the wide range of functions available are impressive. You pick the functions you want for whatever you use most. Personally, I like spoken time, What’s playing (speaking the title and artist of a playing cut), Speed dial, and Next Calendar Event (speaking the next event on my schedule). There are a ton of Social Media and Spotify programs, like sharing to Twitter or Facebook, Add a song to a Spotify playlist, Copy song link and much more. There is even a function called Share a Moment to Twitter, and this shares the song, date, time and weather, plus the street view picture of your GPS location from Google maps. Very cool, my son loved the feature, just not something I would use regularly. The beauty is all features are available, just pick your four most used for the buttons. Love the concept, very personal for each user. The app is simple and beautiful, very intuitive.
In creating smart headphones, Muzik has succeeded in defining a meaningful and valuable new product category, and while that is impressive, and legitimately useful…trust me, you want these because they are the superb audio headphones you always wished for and nobody seemed to make, until now.
